This procedure covers the removal and installation of the exhaust tip on a 2021-2024 Ford F-150 with the 3.5L EcoBoost V6 engine.
Warnings
⚠️Allow exhaust system to cool completely before beginning work. Exhaust components can remain extremely hot for over an hour after engine shutdown and cause severe burns.
⚠Ensure vehicle is securely supported on jack stands before working underneath. Never rely solely on a jack.
ℹ️F-150 exhaust tips may be slip-on style or clamp-on style depending on trim level and configuration. Verify style before ordering replacement.

Parts
- Exhaust tip × 1 — Use OEM specification or aftermarket equivalent
- Clamp or mounting hardware (if included with tip) × 1 — Usually included with aftermarket tips
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and apply parking brake
- Place wheel chocks at front wheels
- Allow exhaust system to cool completely for at least 60 minutes after last engine operation
- Raise rear of vehicle using floor jack at recommended jacking point
- Support vehicle securely on jack stands rated for vehicle weight
- Verify exhaust system is cool to touch before proceeding
Procedure
- 1Inspect exhaust tip attachment methodLocate the exhaust tip at the rear of the tailpipe. Determine if the tip is secured with a clamp (visible band clamp around joint) or if it is a slip-fit design with set screws. Most 2021-2024 F-150 models use a clamp-style attachment.
- 2Apply penetrating oilSpray penetrating oil generously around the clamp bolts and the junction between the exhaust tip and tailpipe. Allow to soak for 5-10 minutes to help break corrosion. This is especially important in areas with winter salt exposure.
- 3Loosen clamp fastenersUsing a 13mm socket and ratchet, loosen the clamp bolt(s) securing the exhaust tip to the tailpipe. Most factory tips use a single-bolt band clamp. Turn counterclockwise to loosen. Do not fully remove the bolt yet, just loosen until clamp is free.
- 4Remove exhaust tipWith clamp loosened, attempt to slide the exhaust tip rearward off the tailpipe. If tip is stuck due to corrosion, gently tap around the perimeter with a rubber mallet while applying rearward pressure. Twist the tip back and forth while pulling to break it free. Once loose, slide tip completely off and set aside.
- 5Clean tailpipe endUse a wire brush to clean the outer surface of the tailpipe where the new tip will mount. Remove all rust, carbon deposits, and old sealant or anti-seize. Clean surface ensures proper fit and prevents exhaust leaks. Wipe clean with a rag when finished.
- 6Prepare new exhaust tipInspect new exhaust tip to ensure it matches the original style and diameter. Apply a thin coat of anti-seize compound to the inside surface of the tip where it will contact the tailpipe. This prevents future corrosion and allows for easier removal later.
- 7Install new exhaust tipSlide the new exhaust tip onto the tailpipe, ensuring it seats fully and is oriented correctly (usually angled down slightly to prevent water accumulation). The tip should slide on approximately 2-3 inches onto the tailpipe. Adjust rotational alignment so the tip exit is level and properly positioned relative to the bumper cutout.
- 8Position and tighten clampPosition the clamp over the junction between the exhaust tip and tailpipe. Ensure the clamp is centered over the overlap area. Hand-tighten the clamp bolt, then use a torque wrench and 13mm socket to tighten to specification. Clamp should be snug but not overtightened as this can deform the tailpipe or tip.
- 9Verify alignment and clearanceCheck that the exhaust tip is properly aligned with the bumper cutout and has adequate clearance from the bumper, hitch, and any nearby components. The tip should not contact any body panels. Adjust position as needed before final tightening, then recheck torque on clamp bolt.
Reassembly
- Double-check that clamp is properly tightened and exhaust tip is secure
- Verify tip alignment and clearance from all surrounding components
- Lower vehicle from jack stands using floor jack
- Remove jack stands and jack from under vehicle
- Remove wheel chocks
Verification
- Start engine and check for exhaust leaks at the tip junction - listen for hissing or ticking sounds
- Visually inspect for any exhaust smoke escaping from the clamp area
- Allow engine to reach operating temperature and recheck for leaks
- Verify exhaust tip remains properly aligned and does not contact bumper or other components
- Test drive vehicle and listen for any rattling or unusual exhaust noises
- After first drive cycle, recheck clamp tightness when exhaust has cooled
