This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the heater core in a 2021-2024 Ford F-150 with the 3.5L EcoBoost engine, requiring extensive dashboard disassembly.

Warnings

⚠️Allow engine to cool completely (minimum 2 hours) before draining coolant. Hot coolant under pressure can cause severe burns.
⚠️The supplemental restraint system (SRS) must be properly deactivated. Wait at least 3 minutes after battery disconnect before working near airbag components.
Coolant is toxic to animals and humans. Dispose of used coolant according to local regulations.
The dashboard is heavy and awkward. A second person is strongly recommended for removal and installation.
ℹ️Take photos during disassembly to document electrical connector positions and routing.

Parts

  • Heater core × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • Heater hose O-rings × 2 — Use OEM specification
  • Dashboard fastener assortment × 1 — Replace any broken clips
  • Coolant × 1 — Motorcraft Orange Coolant

Fluids

  • Motorcraft Orange Coolant — 13 qt

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level ground and allow engine to cool completely for minimum 2 hours
  2. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait 3 minutes for SRS system to discharge
  3. Remove driver and passenger floor mats and protect seat upholstery with covers
  4. Place coolant drain pan under radiator drain petcock
  5. Set up work area with adequate lighting for interior work

Procedure

  1. 1
    Drain cooling system
Open the radiator drain petcock and drain coolant into appropriate container. Once drained, close petcock hand-tight. From the engine bay, locate and disconnect the two heater hoses at the firewall. Use hose clamp pliers if equipped with spring clamps, or loosen worm-gear clamps. Allow residual coolant to drain from hoses. Cap or plug hoses to prevent spillage.

Remove steering column covers and lower trim
Remove the lower steering column covers by releasing the retaining clips and removing screws. Remove the lower dashboard trim panels on both driver and passenger sides using trim removal tools. Disconnect the hood release cable from the lower panel. Remove the left and right side cowl trim panels.

  3. 3
    Disconnect steering column
Remove the steering column pinch bolt at the intermediate shaft (located under dash near firewall). Disconnect all electrical connectors from the steering column including multifunction switch, ignition switch, and any steering wheel controls. Remove the four steering column mounting bolts and carefully lower the column, supporting its weight. Do not allow column to hang by wiring.
Do not rotate the steering wheel once the column is disconnected, as this may damage the clockspring airbag connector.

  4. 4
Remove center console and shifter assembly
Remove the center console by taking out all visible screws in the cup holders and storage areas. Disconnect the shifter electrical connector and carefully lift the console up and over the shifter. For column-shift models, remove the shifter trim bezel. Disconnect any USB ports, power outlets, and auxiliary connections from the console before complete removal.
  5. 5
    Disconnect main electrical connectors
Working from both driver and passenger sides, systematically disconnect all dashboard electrical connectors. This includes: HVAC control module, radio/infotainment system, instrument cluster, passenger airbag connector (if present), all door harness connectors, blend door actuators, and any auxiliary connections. Label or photograph each connection for reassembly reference.
Ensure the SRS system has been deactivated for at least 3 minutes before disconnecting any yellow airbag connectors.
  6. 6
Remove instrument cluster and center stack
Remove the instrument cluster bezel by releasing clips and removing fasteners. Remove the instrument cluster mounting screws and carefully pull cluster forward. Disconnect the main cluster connector and remove cluster. Remove the center stack trim panel and radio/HVAC assembly. Remove mounting screws and disconnect all connectors from the radio and HVAC control head.

  7. 7
Remove A-pillar trim and upper dashboard
Carefully remove both A-pillar trim covers by pulling them away from the retaining clips (start at the top). Remove the upper dashboard trim panel by releasing all clips and removing any fasteners. Remove the defroster grilles. This exposes the upper dashboard mounting bolts.
  8. 8
    Remove main dashboard assembly
Locate and remove all dashboard mounting bolts (typically 8-12 bolts along the top edge, sides, and center tunnel area). With an assistant, carefully pull the dashboard rearward while checking for any remaining connections. Lift and remove the entire dashboard assembly from the vehicle. This is a large, awkward component requiring two people.
The dashboard is heavy and unwieldy. Use proper lifting technique and ensure all connections are disconnected before attempting removal.

Access and remove HVAC housing cover
With the dashboard removed, you now have access to the HVAC housing assembly mounted to the firewall. Remove the plastic cover from the HVAC housing by removing the retaining screws around the perimeter. Some covers are in multiple pieces. Disconnect any remaining blend door actuator connectors if not previously disconnected.

Remove heater core mounting and extract core
Locate the heater core mounting bracket inside the HVAC housing. Remove the heater core mounting fasteners. Carefully slide the heater core out of its housing, noting its orientation. Residual coolant will drain from the core, so have a drain pan ready. Inspect the heater core box for any debris or leaves that may have accumulated.
ℹ️Some residual coolant will drain when removing the heater core. Have absorbent materials ready.

    Install new heater core
Install new O-rings on the heater core inlet and outlet tubes using a light coat of coolant as lubricant. Carefully slide the new heater core into the HVAC housing, ensuring proper orientation and that it seats fully into position. Install the heater core mounting fasteners and torque to specification. Reinstall the HVAC housing cover.

    Reinstall dashboard assembly
With an assistant, carefully position the dashboard assembly into the vehicle. Ensure no wiring harnesses are pinched or trapped. Align the dashboard with all mounting points and install all mounting bolts, torquing to specification. Work systematically to reconnect all electrical connectors, referring to photos taken during disassembly.

Reinstall steering column and interior components
Raise the steering column into position and install the four mounting bolts, torquing to specification. Reconnect all steering column electrical connectors. Install the intermediate shaft pinch bolt. Reinstall the center console, instrument cluster, center stack components, A-pillar trim, and all other interior trim pieces in reverse order of removal.

Reconnect heater hoses and refill coolant
From the engine bay, reconnect the heater hoses to the heater core pipes at the firewall. Install new hose clamps and torque to specification (do not overtighten to avoid damaging hoses or fittings). Fill the cooling system with Motorcraft Orange Coolant to the proper level. Reconnect the negative battery cable.

Bleed cooling system and test operation
Start the engine and allow it to reach operating temperature with the heater on maximum heat and fan speed. Monitor coolant level and add as necessary as air purges from the system. Check for leaks at the heater hose connections. Verify hot air is coming from all vents. Allow engine to cool and recheck coolant level, topping off as needed.
Keep hands and tools away from cooling fans which may engage at any time when engine is running.

Reassembly

  1. Reassemble all components in reverse order of removal
  2. Ensure all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
  3. Verify all dashboard screws and fasteners are installed and torqued properly
  4. Test all dashboard functions including HVAC controls, radio, instrument cluster, and switches
  5. Check that all airbag warning lights function normally and extinguish after startup

Verification

  • Start engine and verify no coolant leaks at heater hose connections
  • Confirm hot air flows from all HVAC vents when heater is set to maximum temperature
  • Verify coolant level is correct when engine is cold after initial heat cycle
  • Test all dashboard functions including instrument cluster, radio, HVAC controls, and switches
  • Confirm no SRS warning lights remain illuminated after startup sequence
  • Check for any rattles or loose trim panels in the dashboard area
  • Verify steering column operation is normal with no binding or unusual noises
