Parts
- Horn assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Horn mounting bracket (if damaged) × 1 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Turn off ignition and remove key
- Allow engine to cool if recently operated
- Disconnect negative battery terminal to prevent electrical issues
Procedure
- 1Disconnect battery negative terminalUsing a 10mm socket, loosen the battery negative terminal bolt and remove the cable from the battery post. Secure the cable away from the battery to prevent accidental reconnection.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 2Access horn locationThe horn is located behind the front bumper on the driver side, typically mounted to the frame rail or bumper support bracket. Access can be gained from underneath the vehicle or by removing the driver side inner fender liner partially. If accessing from below, ensure vehicle is safely supported.
- 3Remove inner fender liner (partial)Using trim panel removal tools, carefully remove the push-pin fasteners securing the front portion of the driver side inner fender liner. Pull back the liner enough to access the horn assembly and electrical connector. Typically 4-6 fasteners need removal for adequate access.
- 4Disconnect horn electrical connectorLocate the horn electrical connector. Press the locking tab and pull the connector straight off the horn terminal. Inspect the connector for corrosion or damage. If corroded, clean with electrical contact cleaner.
- 5Remove horn mounting boltUsing a 10mm socket, remove the horn mounting bolt securing the horn to the mounting bracket or frame. The horn typically uses a single bolt with integral ground connection through the mounting point.Torque specHorn Mounting Bolt15 Nm (11 lb-ft)
- 6Remove horn assemblyOnce the mounting bolt is removed, pull the horn assembly away from the mounting bracket. Inspect the mounting location for corrosion, dirt, or damage. The mounting surface must be clean for proper electrical ground.
- 7Clean mounting surfacesUse a wire brush or sandpaper to clean the horn mounting bracket and frame contact area. Remove all rust, paint, or corrosion to ensure a proper electrical ground connection. Wipe clean with a dry cloth.ℹ️A poor ground connection is the most common cause of horn failure or weak horn operation
- 8Install new horn assemblyPosition the new horn onto the mounting bracket, ensuring the mounting tab aligns properly with the bracket hole. The horn terminal should face outward for easy electrical connector access. Install the mounting bolt finger-tight first.
- 9Torque horn mounting boltUsing a torque wrench, tighten the horn mounting bolt to specification. Ensure the horn does not rotate during tightening and maintains proper orientation.Torque specHorn Mounting Bolt15 Nm (11 lb-ft)
- 10Reconnect horn electrical connectorPush the electrical connector firmly onto the horn terminal until the locking tab clicks into place. Tug gently on the connector to verify it is fully seated and locked.
- 11Reinstall inner fender linerReposition the inner fender liner and install all push-pin fasteners that were removed. Ensure the liner is properly seated and aligned before securing fasteners.
- 12Reconnect battery negative terminalReconnect the negative battery cable to the battery negative post. Tighten the terminal bolt to specification using a torque wrench.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Ensure all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
- Verify inner fender liner is properly secured with all fasteners installed
- Confirm horn mounting bolt is torqued to specification for proper ground connection
Verification
- Turn ignition to ON position without starting engine
- Press horn button on steering wheel and verify horn sounds clearly and loudly
- Test horn operation multiple times to ensure consistent performance
- Verify no warning lights are illuminated on instrument cluster
- Inspect horn area for any loose fasteners or hanging wires
