This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the factory radio/head unit in a 2021-2024 Ford F-150 with 3.5L EcoBoost engine, including disconnecting the battery, removing trim panels, and reconnecting all antenna and harness connections.
Warnings
⚠Disconnecting the battery will erase radio presets and may require SYNC system reconfiguration after installation
⚠Do not force trim panels or clips as they break easily; use proper plastic trim tools to avoid dashboard damage
ℹ️Ensure replacement radio is compatible with the vehicle's SYNC version and hardware configuration before starting
⚠The battery must remain disconnected for at least 2 minutes to allow capacitors to discharge before working on electrical components

Parts
- Replacement radio/head unit (SYNC 4 or compatible) × 1 — Use OEM specification or verified aftermarket compatible unit
- Dash panel clips (if damaged during removal) × 5 — Ford push-pin trim clips
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level ground and apply parking brake
- Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key fob from vehicle interior
- Gather all tools and verify replacement radio compatibility with vehicle
- Photograph or document current radio settings and presets if desired
- Ensure adequate lighting in vehicle interior for connector access
Procedure
- 1Disconnect battery negative terminalOpen the hood and locate the battery in the engine compartment. Use a 10mm socket to loosen the negative terminal bolt. Remove the negative cable from the battery post and secure it away from the terminal to prevent accidental contact. Wait at least 2 minutes for vehicle electrical systems to fully discharge.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 2Remove lower dashboard trim panelUsing plastic trim tools, carefully pry the lower dashboard trim panel below the radio starting from the bottom edge. Work around the perimeter to release all retaining clips. Pull the panel forward and down to clear the upper clips. Set panel aside in a safe location to avoid scratching.
- 3Remove climate control panel trimInsert plastic trim tool at the bottom edge of the climate control panel surround (the trim piece surrounding both climate controls and radio). Gently pry outward to release the lower clips. Work upward on both sides, releasing clips progressively. Once all perimeter clips are free, pull the entire trim panel forward approximately 2 inches but do not remove completely.⚠This panel contains integrated climate control buttons on some models; avoid pulling too forcefully on the panel
- 4Disconnect climate control harness (if applicable)If your trim panel includes integrated climate controls, reach behind the panel and locate the electrical connector. Press the locking tab and pull the connector straight out. If no integrated controls are present, skip this step. Set the trim panel aside.
- 5Remove radio mounting boltsWith the trim removed, locate the four T20 Torx bolts securing the radio unit to the dashboard bracket (two on each side). Use a T20 Torx driver with extension to remove all four bolts. Place bolts in a magnetic tray or container for reassembly. Note the bolt locations as they may be of different lengths.
- 6Pull radio unit forwardCarefully pull the radio unit straight forward out of the dashboard opening approximately 4-6 inches. Support the weight of the unit with one hand to prevent it from hanging on the wiring harnesses. Use a flashlight to inspect the rear connections.
- 7Disconnect antenna and harness connectorsWorking from the rear of the radio unit, disconnect all connections in this order: (1) Press the release tab on the main wiring harness connector and pull straight back, (2) Unscrew the coaxial antenna connector by turning counterclockwise, (3) Disconnect the GPS antenna connector if equipped by pressing the release tab, (4) Disconnect any additional USB or auxiliary connectors by pressing their locking tabs. Support the radio as you disconnect the final connector.
- 8Remove old radio unitOnce all connectors are disconnected, fully remove the old radio unit from the dashboard. Inspect all connectors for damage, corrosion, or bent pins. Clean any dust or debris from the dashboard cavity using compressed air or a clean cloth.
- 9Prepare new radio unitRemove the new radio unit from packaging and inspect for any shipping damage. If transferring mounting brackets from the old unit, remove them and install onto the new unit. Verify all connectors on the new unit match the vehicle harnesses.
- 10Connect harnesses to new radioPosition the new radio near the dashboard opening. Connect all harnesses in reverse order of removal: (1) Connect main wiring harness until it clicks into place, (2) Thread and hand-tighten the coaxial antenna connector clockwise until snug, (3) Connect GPS antenna if equipped until it clicks, (4) Connect USB and auxiliary connectors if equipped. Verify each connection is fully seated and locked.
- 11Install and secure new radio unitCarefully slide the radio unit into the dashboard opening, ensuring no wires are pinched behind the unit. Align the mounting holes with the dashboard bracket. Install all four T20 Torx mounting bolts and hand-tighten. Verify the radio is flush and properly aligned with the dashboard opening before final tightening. The torque specification for radio mounting is not provided in the database; tighten securely but do not overtighten to avoid cracking the radio housing (approximately 6-8 Nm by feel).
- 12Reconnect battery and test radioReturn to the engine compartment and reconnect the negative battery terminal. Tighten the battery terminal bolt to specification using a torque wrench. Enter the vehicle and turn the ignition to ON (engine off). Verify the radio powers on, displays correctly, and all buttons function. Test AM/FM reception and connected features.ℹ️The radio may require initial setup and SYNC system configuration before full functionality is restoredTorque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 13Reinstall trim panelsIf climate control harness was disconnected, reconnect it now ensuring it clicks into place. Position the climate control/radio trim panel and align all clips with their respective slots. Press firmly around the entire perimeter until all clips snap into place. Reinstall the lower dashboard trim panel by aligning upper clips first, then pressing the lower edge until all clips engage.
Reassembly
- Verify all trim panels are fully seated with no gaps or misalignment
- Test all climate control buttons to ensure they function properly after trim reinstallation
- Check that no warning lights remain illuminated on the instrument cluster
- Verify the radio display brightness matches dash lighting levels
Verification
- Power on the radio and verify display shows proper startup sequence
- Test all audio sources (AM/FM radio, SiriusXM if equipped, Bluetooth, USB)
- Verify steering wheel audio controls operate the new head unit correctly
- Check that backup camera displays when shifting into reverse
- Confirm navigation system operates correctly if equipped
- Test voice commands and SYNC functionality
- Verify all speakers produce sound without distortion
- Check that radio presets can be saved and recalled
- Ensure no rattles or loose trim panels when driving
