This procedure covers removal and replacement of the seat heater element on 2021-2024 Ford F-150 models, requiring partial seat disassembly and upholstery work.
Warnings
⚠Ensure vehicle has been off for at least 30 minutes to allow seat heater elements to cool completely before beginning work
⚠Seat airbag system may be present - verify system is disabled and wait 2 minutes after battery disconnect before proceeding
ℹ️Take photos during disassembly to aid in proper hog ring and upholstery positioning during reassembly
ℹ️Heater element pads are fragile - avoid folding or creasing the heating wires during installation

Parts
- Seat heater element pad × 1 — Use OEM specification for specific seat position
- Hog rings × 10 — Generic upholstery hog rings
- Electrical connector seals (if damaged) × 1 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Move seat to full forward position for easier access to rear mounting bolts
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait minimum 2 minutes for airbag system to discharge
- Photograph seat upholstery seams and hog ring locations for reference during reassembly
- Test seat heater function with multimeter if diagnosing intermittent failure (measure resistance across heater terminals - typical range 2-4 ohms)
Procedure
- 1Disconnect Battery and Remove SeatDisconnect the negative battery terminal using 8mm socket. Move seat to full forward position. Remove the four seat mounting bolts (two front, two rear) using 13mm socket. Disconnect all electrical connectors under the seat including seat heater, power seat motor (if equipped), and occupancy sensor connectors. Carefully remove seat from vehicle with assistance - seat weighs approximately 50-70 lbs.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)Module Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 2Remove Seat Back CoversPlace seat on clean padded work surface with seat back facing up. Locate and remove plastic trim covers on seat back lower edge using trim panel removal tools. Remove T30 Torx screws securing seat back lower panel. Carefully peel back lower trim panel to expose seat back hog rings and upholstery attachment points.Torque specCover Screws12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
- 3Remove Seat Cushion UpholsteryFlip seat over to access bottom cushion. Remove J-channel trim strips from front and sides of seat cushion by carefully prying with trim tools. Using hog ring pliers, release all hog rings securing seat cushion upholstery to seat frame (typically 12-16 rings around perimeter). Mark or photograph hog ring positions. Carefully pull upholstery away from foam padding, working from rear to front.
- 4Disconnect Heater Element WiringLocate the seat heater element connector attached to the heating pad - typically a 2-pin connector routed through the seat foam. Disconnect the connector by depressing the locking tab. Note the wire routing path through the foam for proper reinstallation. If connector is integrated into the heater pad, trace wiring to the main seat harness connection point and disconnect there.
- 5Remove Failed Heater ElementThe heater element is typically adhered to the seat foam with light adhesive. Starting at one corner, carefully peel the heater pad away from the foam backing. Use heat gun on low setting if adhesive is stubborn, being careful not to overheat foam. Remove any remaining adhesive residue from foam surface using isopropyl alcohol and allow to dry completely. Inspect foam for damage that may have caused heater element failure.
- 6Prepare Seat Foam SurfaceClean the seat foam surface where heater element mounts using isopropyl alcohol to remove any oils, debris, or old adhesive. Allow surface to dry completely. Verify foam is not compressed or damaged in areas where heater element will contact. If foam is damaged, repair or replace foam padding to ensure even heat distribution and prevent future element failure.
- 7Install New Heater ElementUnpack new heater element carefully, avoiding any sharp bends in the heating wire grid. Position element on seat foam matching the outline of the previous element - heating wires should run front-to-back and side-to-side evenly. If element has adhesive backing, remove protective liner and press firmly onto foam starting from center and working outward to eliminate air bubbles. If no adhesive backing is present, use approved fabric adhesive spray applied lightly to foam surface.
- 8Route and Connect WiringRoute the heater element connector wire through the seat foam following the original path photographed during disassembly. Ensure wire is not pinched or kinked. Connect heater element connector to seat wiring harness, ensuring connector locks fully with audible click. Verify connector seals are properly seated to prevent moisture intrusion.
- 9Reinstall Seat Cushion UpholsteryPosition seat cushion upholstery over foam and heater element, aligning seams and mounting points with original locations from reference photos. Starting at rear of cushion, stretch upholstery over foam and secure with new hog rings using hog ring pliers at marked locations. Work progressively toward front, maintaining even tension. Install approximately 12-16 hog rings around perimeter, ensuring upholstery is smooth without wrinkles.
- 10Reinstall Trim and TestReinstall J-channel trim strips to seat cushion edges by snapping into place. Reinstall seat back lower panel and secure with Torx screws. Reinstall plastic trim covers. Before installing seat in vehicle, reconnect battery temporarily and test heater element function - element should warm evenly across surface within 2-3 minutes on high setting. Verify no cold spots indicating broken heating wire.Torque specCover Screws12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
- 11Reinstall Seat in VehicleWith assistance, carefully position seat into vehicle over mounting bolt locations. Connect all electrical connectors under seat including heater, power seat motors, and occupancy sensor. Verify all connectors are fully seated and locked. Align seat mounting holes with floor brackets and install four mounting bolts finger-tight. Torque mounting bolts to specification in cross pattern.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 12Final Connection and System CheckReconnect negative battery terminal and torque to specification. Clear any airbag system codes that may have set during battery disconnect using scan tool if airbag light remains illuminated after 10 seconds of ignition on. Test all seat functions including power adjustment (if equipped), heater on all settings, and verify occupancy sensor operation.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Torque all fasteners to specified values using calibrated torque wrench
- Ensure all electrical connectors are fully seated with locking tabs engaged
- Verify seat upholstery is properly tensioned without wrinkles or bunching
- Check that seat slides freely on tracks and all power functions operate correctly
Verification
- Turn ignition to ON position and activate seat heater to maximum setting
- After 2-3 minutes, verify entire seating surface warms evenly with no cold spots
- Test all seat heater settings (low, medium, high) for proper operation
- Verify seat occupancy sensor is functioning by checking airbag system indicator light is off
- Slide seat through full range of travel to ensure no wiring interference or binding
- Check that upholstery is properly secured with no loose areas or separated seams
