Replace a single shift solenoid in the 10R80 automatic transmission by removing the transmission pan, valve body cover, and identifying/replacing the faulty solenoid.

Warnings

Transmission fluid will be hot if vehicle has been recently driven. Allow transmission to cool for at least 2 hours before beginning work.
The 10R80 transmission uses MERCON LV fluid exclusively. Do not substitute with other ATF types as this will cause transmission damage.
ℹ️Identify the specific failed solenoid before ordering parts. The 10R80 has multiple shift solenoids (SS-A through SS-E) and they are not interchangeable.
⚠️Ensure vehicle is securely supported on jack stands. Never work under a vehicle supported only by a floor jack.

  3. Raise front of vehicle and support securely on jack stands rated for vehicle weight
  4. Identify the specific failed solenoid from diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) before beginning
  5. Gather all replacement parts and verify correct solenoid has been obtained
  6. Position drain pan under transmission pan

Procedure

  1. 1
    Drain transmission fluid
Locate the transmission drain plug on the bottom of the transmission pan. Using the appropriate socket, slowly loosen and remove the drain plug. Allow fluid to drain completely into the drain pan. This will take 5-10 minutes. Inspect drained fluid for metal particles or debris that might indicate additional transmission damage.

  2. 2
    Remove transmission pan
Once fluid is fully drained, remove all transmission pan bolts in a criss-cross pattern starting from the outer edges. Carefully lower the pan as residual fluid (approximately 1-2 quarts) will remain in the pan. Tilt pan to drain remaining fluid into drain pan. Remove pan completely and set aside.
    Torque spec
    Pan Bolts19 Nm (14 lb-ft)
  3. 3
    Remove and inspect transmission filter
The transmission filter is secured inside the pan area. Remove the filter by pulling straight down or unbolting if equipped with bolted mount (check specific configuration). Inspect filter for excessive debris or metal particles. If contamination is present, further transmission inspection may be required beyond solenoid replacement.
ℹ️Excessive metal debris in the filter indicates internal transmission wear and the problem may not be limited to the solenoid.
  4. 4
    Clean pan and mating surfaces
Remove the old gasket material from both the transmission pan and the transmission case mating surface using a plastic scraper. Do not use metal scrapers that could gouge the aluminum surfaces. Clean both surfaces thoroughly with brake cleaner and wipe dry with clean shop towels. Inspect pan for cracks or damage.
Metal scrapers can damage the soft aluminum pan and case surfaces, leading to leaks. Use only plastic scrapers.
  5. 5
    Remove valve body cover
Locate the valve body cover inside the transmission case. Remove all cover screws in a criss-cross pattern, keeping them organized for reinstallation. Carefully lift the valve body cover straight up to avoid disturbing the valve body assembly. Note the position of any check balls or small components that may be under the cover.
Small check balls or springs may be present under the valve body cover. Note their exact positions before removal as incorrect placement will cause transmission malfunction.

  6. 6
    Locate and identify target solenoid
The shift solenoids are mounted to the valve body and identified by labels (SS-A, SS-B, SS-C, SS-D, SS-E). Locate the specific solenoid identified by your diagnostic trouble code. Solenoids are typically arranged in a row on the valve body. Take a photo for reference if needed to ensure correct identification.
ℹ️Each solenoid controls specific gear ranges. Installing the wrong solenoid or installing in the wrong position will cause transmission malfunction and may set additional fault codes.
  7. 7
    Disconnect solenoid electrical connector
Locate the electrical connector attached to the target solenoid. Press the locking tab and carefully disconnect the connector from the solenoid. Note the orientation and routing of the wiring harness for reinstallation.
Do not pull on wires. Press the connector release tab fully before pulling on the connector body to avoid damaging the harness.
  8. 8
    Remove failed solenoid
Most shift solenoids in the 10R80 are secured with a small bolt or clip. Remove the retaining bolt using the appropriate socket. Carefully pull the solenoid straight out from the valve body. Inspect the O-rings on the old solenoid for damage. Note the depth of installation for the replacement solenoid.

  9. 9
    Install new solenoid
Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean MERCON LV transmission fluid. Carefully insert the new solenoid straight into the valve body bore, ensuring it seats fully. Install the retaining bolt and torque to specification. Do not overtighten as this can crack the solenoid housing.
Solenoid must be fully seated before tightening retaining bolt. Partially seated solenoids will cause hydraulic leaks and transmission malfunction.

  10. 10
    Reconnect electrical connector
Reconnect the electrical connector to the new solenoid, ensuring it clicks into place. Verify the connector is fully seated and the locking tab is engaged. Route the wiring harness in the original path to avoid pinching during cover installation.
  11. 11
    Reinstall valve body cover
If any check balls or springs were removed, reinstall them in their exact original positions. Install a new valve body cover gasket. Carefully position the valve body cover, ensuring it seats evenly. Install all cover screws and torque in a criss-cross pattern starting from the center.

    Cover Screws12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
  12. 12
    Install new transmission filter
Install the new transmission filter in the same orientation as the original. If the filter has a bolted mount, ensure bolts are properly torqued. If it's a push-in style, ensure it seats fully with a firm push.
  13. 13
    Reinstall transmission pan
Install a new transmission pan gasket on the pan (or on the transmission case, depending on gasket design). Position the pan carefully to align all bolt holes. Install all pan bolts finger-tight first, then torque in a criss-cross pattern from the center outward to ensure even gasket compression.
    Torque spec
    Pan Bolts19 Nm (14 lb-ft)
  14. 14
Install drain plug and refill transmission
Install a new drain plug washer and reinstall the drain plug to specification. Locate the transmission fill plug on the side of the transmission case. Remove the fill plug and use a fluid pump to add approximately 6-7 quarts of MERCON LV transmission fluid through the fill hole. Fluid level will be verified in the next step.
Only use Motorcraft MERCON LV ATF. Using incorrect fluid will cause transmission damage and void warranty.
    Torque spec
    Drain Plug39 Nm (29 lb-ft)
  15. 15
    Check and adjust fluid level
With the fill plug removed, start the engine and allow it to reach operating temperature (approximately 150-170°F transmission fluid temperature). With the engine running and transmission in Park on level ground, fluid should drip slowly from the fill hole when at proper level. Add fluid as needed until a slow drip is achieved, then reinstall the fill plug to specification. Lower vehicle from jack stands.
Transmission must be at operating temperature (150-170°F) for accurate fluid level check. Cold fluid level will be incorrect.
⚠️Ensure vehicle is securely on jack stands and parking brake is engaged before running engine with vehicle raised.

Reassembly

  1. Verify all electrical connectors are properly seated and locked
  2. Double-check that all transmission pan bolts are torqued to specification in the correct pattern
  3. Ensure no tools or shop towels were left in the transmission area before closing
  4. Verify drain plug and fill plug are both properly torqued with new washers installed

Verification

  • Start engine and verify no transmission fluid leaks from pan, drain plug, or fill plug
  • Clear any existing diagnostic trouble codes using a scan tool
  • Road test vehicle through all gear ranges to verify proper shift operation
  • Re-scan for trouble codes after test drive to confirm solenoid fault has been resolved
  • Recheck transmission fluid level after test drive and adjust if necessary
  • Monitor transmission operation over the next 100 miles to ensure repair is successful
