This procedure covers the removal and installation of the steering wheel on a 2021-2024 Ford F-150 with 3.5L EcoBoost engine, including proper airbag handling and alignment procedures.
Warnings
⚠️Airbag system is active. Disconnect battery and wait minimum 2 minutes before working on airbag components to allow backup power to discharge.
⚠️Never use hammers or strike the steering wheel assembly. This can damage the airbag sensor and cause unintended deployment or prevent deployment in a crash.
⚠Do not turn the steering column shaft when the steering wheel is removed. This will de-center the clockspring and cause airbag/horn failure.
⚠Wheels must be pointed straight ahead before removal to maintain clockspring alignment.
Tools required
T30 Torx bitEssential
19mm socketEssential
Torque wrenchEssential
Steering wheel puller (if steering wheel is stuck)
Flathead screwdriver (trim removal)
Masking tape or alignment markerEssential
Battery disconnect tool or 10mm wrenchEssential
Parts
- Steering wheel (if replacing) × 1 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and set parking brake
- Turn steering wheel to center position with front wheels pointed straight ahead
- Turn ignition off and remove key
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait minimum 2 minutes for airbag system backup power to discharge
- Verify steering wheel position is centered before proceeding
Procedure
- 1Mark steering wheel alignmentBefore removal, use masking tape or a marker to mark the relationship between the steering wheel and the steering column shaft. This ensures proper alignment during reinstallation and prevents clockspring damage.
- 2Access airbag module mounting boltsFrom the back side of the steering wheel, locate the two airbag module access holes on either side of the steering wheel hub. Insert T30 Torx bit through each access hole to reach the airbag mounting bolts.
- 3Remove airbag module boltsUsing the T30 Torx bit, remove both airbag module mounting bolts. Support the airbag module as you remove the second bolt to prevent it from falling.⚠Keep all metal objects away from airbag electrical connectors to prevent static discharge.Torque specAirbag Module Bolts7 Nm (5 lb-ft)
- 4Disconnect airbag electrical connectorsCarefully pull the airbag module away from the steering wheel. Disconnect the airbag electrical connector by pressing the locking tab and pulling straight out. Disconnect the horn wire connector if equipped. Place airbag module face-up on a clean, padded surface away from work area.⚠️Always place airbag module face-up on a stable surface. Never place face-down as this can cause injury if accidental deployment occurs.
- 5Disconnect steering wheel electrical connectorsLocate and disconnect all electrical connectors behind the steering wheel including cruise control switches, paddle shifter connectors (if equipped), and heating element connector (if equipped with heated steering wheel). Note routing and connector positions for reassembly.
- 6Remove steering wheel retaining nutUsing a 19mm socket, remove the steering wheel retaining nut from the center of the steering column shaft. Do not discard the nut if reusing the steering wheel.Torque specSteering Wheel Nut54 Nm (40 lb-ft)
- 7Remove steering wheel from columnFirmly grip the steering wheel at 3 and 9 o'clock positions. Rock the wheel gently while pulling straight back toward you. If the wheel is tight on the splines, use a proper steering wheel puller tool. Never strike the wheel or column shaft with a hammer.⚠Do not allow the steering column shaft to rotate after wheel removal. Lock the column or tape the clockspring in place to prevent rotation.
- 8Inspect and secure clockspringWith steering wheel removed, verify the clockspring is centered and locked in place. If equipped, engage the clockspring locking mechanism. If not equipped with a lock, use tape to secure it and prevent rotation. Inspect clockspring connector and wiring for damage.
- 9Install steering wheel onto columnAlign the steering wheel splines with the column shaft, matching the alignment marks made during removal. Ensure the clockspring connector routes properly through the steering wheel. Slide the steering wheel onto the shaft until fully seated.
- 10Install and torque steering wheel nutInstall the steering wheel retaining nut and torque to specification using a calibrated torque wrench. Verify alignment marks still match after tightening.Torque specSteering Wheel Nut54 Nm (40 lb-ft)
- 11Reconnect steering wheel electrical connectorsReconnect all steering wheel electrical connectors including cruise control, paddle shifters, and heated steering wheel (if equipped). Ensure all connectors are fully seated and locked. Route wiring as noted during removal.
- 12Install airbag moduleReconnect the horn wire and airbag electrical connector. Carefully position the airbag module onto the steering wheel, aligning the mounting holes. Install both airbag module mounting bolts finger-tight first, then torque to specification in the sequence specified in service manual.⚠Verify airbag connector is fully locked before installing module to prevent airbag warning light.Torque specAirbag Module Bolts7 Nm (5 lb-ft)
- 13Reconnect battery and initialize systemReconnect the negative battery terminal. Turn ignition to ON position without starting engine. Verify airbag warning light illuminates briefly then extinguishes (normal system check). If light remains on, recheck all airbag connections.
Reassembly
- Ensure all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
- Verify steering wheel is centered and alignment marks match
- Confirm airbag module is securely fastened with both bolts torqued properly
- Check that clockspring is not rotated from center position
Verification
- Start engine and verify power steering functions normally with no unusual noises
- Turn steering wheel full lock left and right to verify full range of motion without binding
- Test horn operation by pressing center of airbag module
- Test all steering wheel controls including cruise control, audio controls, and paddle shifters (if equipped)
- Verify airbag warning light is off after initialization cycle
- Test heated steering wheel function if equipped
- Perform a test drive to confirm proper steering operation and control function
