This procedure rotates the tires on a 2021-2024 Ford F-150 3.5L EcoBoost to promote even tire wear and extend tire life.
Warnings
⚠️Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always use jack stands rated for the vehicle weight.
⚠Ensure the vehicle is on a level, stable surface before beginning tire rotation.
ℹ️RWD F-150 uses a rearward cross pattern: front tires move straight back, rear tires cross to opposite front positions.
Tools required
Floor jackEssential
Jack stands (4)Essential
Torque wrench (80-150 lb-ft range)Essential
Wheel chocksEssential
Lug wrench or 21mm socketEssential
Tire pressure gauge
Chalk or marker for tire marking
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level, solid surface and engage parking brake
- Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels if starting with front, or front wheels if starting with rear
- If equipped with wheel locks, locate the wheel lock key
- Mark each tire position with chalk (LF, RF, LR, RR) to track rotation pattern
- Loosen all lug nuts 1/4 turn while wheels are still on ground
Procedure
- 1Raise front of vehiclePosition floor jack under front jacking point per owner's manual. Raise front end until wheels are off ground. Place jack stands under frame rails at designated support points. Lower vehicle onto jack stands and verify stability before proceeding.
- 2Raise rear of vehiclePosition floor jack under rear axle housing center section. Raise rear end until wheels are off ground. Place jack stands under frame rails at designated rear support points. Lower vehicle onto jack stands and verify all four corners are stable.
- 3Remove all four wheelsRemove lug nuts completely from all four wheels. Remove each wheel and place in a clear area matching its current position (LF, RF, LR, RR). Inspect lug studs and wheel mounting surfaces for damage or excessive rust.
- 4Inspect tires and brake componentsWith all wheels removed, inspect each tire for uneven wear, cuts, bulges, or embedded objects. Check brake pads, rotors, and calipers for wear or damage. Note any issues for follow-up service. Inspect wheel wells for debris.
- 5Rotate tires per RWD patternFor RWD F-150, move left front tire to left rear position, right front tire to right rear position. Move left rear tire to right front position, and right rear tire to left front position. This is the recommended rearward cross pattern for rear-wheel drive vehicles.
- 6Install and hand-thread lug nutsMount each tire in its new position, ensuring wheel is seated flush against hub. Hand-thread all lug nuts to prevent cross-threading. Tighten lug nuts by hand as much as possible before using tools.
- 7Torque lug nuts to specificationUsing torque wrench, tighten lug nuts in star pattern to proper specification based on wheel type. For alloy wheels, torque to 96 lb-ft (130 Nm). For steel wheels, torque to 103 lb-ft (140 Nm). If using generic wheel lug nut spec, torque to 110 lb-ft (149 Nm). Complete star pattern twice to ensure even seating.Torque specLug Nuts - Alloy Wheels130 Nm (96 lb-ft)Lug Nuts - Steel Wheels140 Nm (103 lb-ft)
- 8Lower vehicle to groundRaise vehicle slightly with floor jack to remove jack stands. Remove all four jack stands. Slowly lower vehicle completely to ground. Remove wheel chocks.
- 9Final torque verification and tire pressure checkWith vehicle on ground, perform final torque verification on all lug nuts in star pattern using torque wrench. Check and adjust tire pressure to specification listed on driver door jamb placard. Pressures may differ front to rear on F-150.
Reassembly
- No disassembly required for this procedure
Verification
- Test drive vehicle at low speed and listen for any unusual noises or vibrations
- Verify steering feels normal with no pulling to either side
- Recheck lug nut torque after 50 miles of driving, especially if alloy wheels are equipped
- Monitor tire pressure over next few days to ensure no leaks from wheel remounting
- Update vehicle maintenance records with tire rotation date and mileage
