Replace the internal water pump on a 2021-2024 Ford F-150 3.5L EcoBoost engine. This pump is driven by the timing chain and requires partial engine disassembly to access.
Warnings
⚠️The internal water pump failure can cause coolant to mix with engine oil. Check oil for coolant contamination before and after repair. Milky oil indicates coolant intrusion.
⚠️Engine must be completely cool before starting. Hot coolant under pressure can cause severe burns.
⚠Timing chain position must be maintained during this repair. Incorrect timing will cause severe engine damage.
⚠Support the engine properly before removing motor mounts. Engine can shift or fall causing injury or damage.
ℹ️This is an internal water pump requiring timing cover removal. Budget 3+ hours and ensure you have all tools before starting.

Parts
- Water pump assembly with gasket × 1 — Motorcraft PW-608 or equivalent
- Timing cover gasket × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Engine coolant (orange) × 1 — Motorcraft VC-3DIL-B
- Engine oil and filter × 1 — Motorcraft 0W-20
- O-rings for coolant pipes × 1 — Use OEM specification
Fluids
- Motorcraft Orange Coolant — 13 qt
- Motorcraft 0W-20 Full Synthetic — 6 qt
Preparation
- Ensure engine is completely cold (wait minimum 2 hours after last operation)
- Disconnect negative battery cable and wait 2 minutes for airbag system to deplete
- Raise and support vehicle on jack stands at frame contact points
- Remove engine cover and belly pan if equipped
- Place drain pan under radiator and engine
- Take photos of accessory belt routing before removal
Procedure
- 1Drain cooling system and remove front accessoriesOpen radiator drain petcock and drain coolant into appropriate container. Remove upper radiator hose. Remove accessory drive belt by rotating tensioner clockwise. Remove cooling fan and shroud assembly by disconnecting electrical connector and removing mounting bolts.
- 2Remove front engine accessoriesRemove power steering pump mounting bolts and secure pump aside without disconnecting lines. Remove alternator mounting bolts and position aside. Remove A/C compressor mounting bolts and secure aside without disconnecting refrigerant lines. Label and disconnect any coolant hoses attached to timing cover area.Torque specHose Clamps3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
- 3Support engine and remove front motor mountInstall engine support bar across fender openings or attach engine hoist to lifting eyes. Raise engine slightly to unload motor mount. Remove passenger side motor mount bolts and the mount itself to provide clearance for timing cover removal.
- 4Remove crankshaft pulley and harmonic balancerRemove crankshaft pulley center bolt (requires holding crankshaft from rotating). Use harmonic balancer puller to remove balancer from crankshaft. Do not pry against timing cover. Mark balancer orientation to crankshaft for reinstallation.
- 5Drain engine oil and position engineDrain engine oil completely as coolant may have contaminated oil through failed pump. Rotate crankshaft to TDC on cylinder #1 (timing marks aligned). Install timing chain locking tool or pins to maintain cam and crank timing position.⚠️DO NOT rotate engine after timing cover removal without proper timing tools installed. This will cause valve-to-piston contact and catastrophic engine damage.
- 6Remove timing coverRemove all timing cover bolts in reverse of tightening sequence (consult service manual for bolt locations - approximately 20+ bolts of varying lengths). Carefully separate timing cover from engine block. You may need to gently tap with plastic mallet. Remove and discard timing cover gasket.
- 7Access and remove internal water pumpWith timing cover removed, the internal water pump is now visible on the front of the engine block, driven by the timing chain. Verify timing marks are still aligned. Remove water pump mounting bolts in a cross-pattern. Carefully extract water pump from engine block bore.⚠Inspect pump cavity for debris or metal particles. Presence of metal indicates additional engine damage may exist.Torque specWater Pump Bolts25 Nm (18 lb-ft)
- 8Clean mounting surfaces and inspect timing componentsThoroughly clean water pump mounting surface on engine block using plastic scraper. Clean timing cover mating surface. Inspect timing chain for wear, slack, or damage. Inspect timing chain guides and tensioners for wear. Replace if necessary while accessible.
- 9Install new water pumpInstall new O-ring or gasket on new water pump (do not reuse old seal). Verify pump drive gear freely rotates. Apply thin film of clean engine oil to O-ring. Carefully align pump into bore and seat fully. Install pump bolts and torque in sequence (star pattern from center outward) to specification.ℹ️Verify pump gasket is correctly positioned before tightening bolts. Misaligned gasket will cause immediate coolant leaks.Torque specWater Pump Bolts25 Nm (18 lb-ft)
- 10Reinstall timing coverInstall new timing cover gasket (verify correct orientation). Apply small bead of RTV sealant at cylinder head-to-block corners if specified by service manual. Position timing cover carefully over dowel pins. Install all timing cover bolts finger-tight first, then torque to specification in proper sequence (inside-out pattern).
- 11Reinstall crankshaft components and accessoriesInstall harmonic balancer aligned with previous marks. Install crankshaft pulley and torque center bolt to specification (use holding tool). Reinstall motor mount. Remove engine support. Reinstall A/C compressor, alternator, and power steering pump to their original positions.
- 12Reinstall cooling system componentsReconnect all coolant hoses and tighten clamps to specification. Install cooling fan assembly and torque bolts. Install accessory drive belt following routing diagram. Reconnect all electrical connectors.Torque specHose Clamps3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
- 13Fill fluids and bleed cooling systemInstall new oil filter and fill engine with fresh 0W-20 oil (6 quarts). Close radiator petcock to specification. Fill cooling system with Motorcraft Orange coolant (13 quarts total capacity). Use vacuum fill tool if available to prevent air pockets. Run engine to operating temperature with heater on high. Burp system by squeezing upper radiator hose. Top off coolant as needed.
Reassembly
- Verify all timing cover bolts are installed and torqued - missing bolts will cause catastrophic oil and coolant leaks
- Double-check accessory belt is properly routed before starting engine
- Ensure all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
- Verify no tools or parts are left in engine compartment before starting
Verification
- Start engine and verify no coolant or oil leaks at timing cover, water pump area, or hose connections
- Monitor coolant temperature - should reach 195-220°F and cooling fans should cycle normally
- Check for proper heater operation - should produce hot air at temperature
- Verify coolant level is stable after 2-3 heat cycles (check when cold)
- Monitor engine oil level and condition over next 100 miles - check for coolant contamination (milky appearance)
- Listen for abnormal noises from timing chain area during operation
