Parts
- Rear window regulator assembly with motor × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Door panel retaining clips (assorted) × 1 — Ford W710591-S440
- Weathershield adhesive tape × 1 — 3M 08008 or equivalent
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 2 minutes for system discharge
- Open the rear door fully and secure in open position
- Roll window to approximately mid-height position before disconnecting battery (this provides best access)
- Lay protective covering over rear seat to catch clips and debris
Procedure
- 1Remove door trim panelUsing trim removal tools, carefully pry out the screw covers at the door pull handle and armrest. Remove the T20 Torx screws beneath. Remove the door lock bezel by pulling upward. Starting at the rear bottom corner, use trim tools to release the retaining clips around the perimeter of the door panel. Lift panel upward to disengage from top of door frame and set aside on protected surface.
- 2Disconnect door panel electrical connectorsLocate and disconnect all electrical connectors from the door panel including power window switch, power lock switch, and any additional features (puddle lamp, speaker). Press release tabs and pull connectors straight apart. Label connectors if needed for reassembly reference.
- 3Peel back weathershieldCarefully peel back the plastic weathershield vapor barrier starting from the bottom corner. Work slowly to preserve the adhesive for reinstallation. If adhesive is damaged, prepare replacement tape. Fold the barrier upward and secure temporarily with masking tape to keep it out of the work area.
- 4Secure window glass in upper positionManually slide the window glass upward to the fully closed position. Use masking tape to secure the glass to the door frame from the outside, running tape from the glass across to the exterior door panel. This prevents the glass from falling when the regulator is disconnected. Alternatively, have an assistant hold the glass in position.
- 5Disconnect window regulator electrical connectorLocate the window regulator motor electrical connector inside the door. Press the locking tab and disconnect the connector from the motor. Verify the connector is fully separated and route the wire harness clear of the regulator removal path.
- 6Detach window glass from regulatorLocate the two window glass mounting bolts that attach the glass to the regulator lift mechanism (typically accessible through access holes in the door inner panel). Using a 10mm socket, remove these bolts. Carefully separate the glass from the regulator mechanism and ensure the glass remains secured in the upper position.
- 7Remove regulator mounting boltsLocate all regulator mounting bolts (typically 3-4 bolts securing the regulator assembly and motor to the door inner panel). Using a T30 Torx driver or 10mm socket as applicable, remove all mounting bolts. Keep track of bolt locations as some may be different lengths. Support the regulator assembly to prevent it from falling.
- 8Extract regulator assembly from doorCarefully maneuver the window regulator assembly out through the largest access opening in the door inner panel. The regulator rails and cable mechanism will need to be rotated and angled to clear the door structure. Work slowly to avoid damaging the door or adjacent components. Remove the complete assembly from the door cavity.
- 9Install new regulator assemblyPosition the new window regulator assembly and carefully guide it into the door cavity through the access opening. Align the regulator rails and mechanism into their proper positions within the door structure. Ensure all cables are routed correctly and not kinked or twisted.
- 10Install regulator mounting boltsAlign the regulator mounting holes with the door inner panel mounting points. Install all mounting bolts finger-tight first to ensure proper alignment. Then torque the mounting bolts to specification in a cross-pattern sequence to ensure even distribution of clamping force.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 11Attach window glass to regulatorLower the window glass into position to align with the regulator lift mechanism mounting points. Insert and hand-start both glass mounting bolts. Once both bolts are started, tighten them evenly to secure the glass. Remove the masking tape securing the glass in the upper position.
- 12Connect electrical connector and test operationReconnect the window regulator motor electrical connector, ensuring it clicks into place. Reconnect the battery negative terminal temporarily. Test window operation by cycling the window up and down several times using the switch. Verify smooth operation without binding or unusual noises. Check that window seals properly at full up position. Disconnect battery again before continuing.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 13Reinstall weathershield and door panelReposition the weathershield vapor barrier against the door, ensuring complete coverage and proper sealing around all openings. Apply new adhesive tape if original adhesive was damaged. Reconnect all door panel electrical connectors (window switch, lock switch, accessories). Position the door panel and engage the top edge into the door frame channel. Press firmly around the perimeter to seat all retaining clips. Install and tighten all door panel screws to specification, then install screw covers and door lock bezel.Torque specCover Screws12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Verify all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
- Ensure weathershield is completely sealed with no gaps or tears
- Confirm all door panel clips are properly engaged before testing
- Torque battery terminal to specification when reconnecting
Verification
- Reconnect battery and verify window operates smoothly through full range of travel
- Test window auto-up and auto-down functions if equipped (may require relearning procedure via switch calibration)
- Check for proper window sealing at full closed position with no wind noise
- Verify window drops slightly when door is opened (if equipped with this feature)
- Confirm no rattles or abnormal noises during operation
- Test all other door panel switches and features to ensure proper connection
