Parts
- Front wiper motor assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Wiper linkage (if damaged) × 1 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and set parking brake
- Turn ignition off and remove key
- Disconnect battery negative terminal and wait 2 minutes
- Mark wiper blade rest positions on windshield with masking tape for reference
- Ensure wipers are in parked position before beginning
Procedure
- 1Remove wiper armsLift the wiper arm away from windshield. Remove the protective cap from the wiper arm nut. Use a 13mm socket to remove the wiper arm retaining nut from each arm. Mark the position of each arm before removal. Use a rocking motion to pull each wiper arm off the splined shaft. Remove both driver and passenger side wiper arms.
- 2Remove cowl top panelOpen the hood. Locate and remove the plastic push-pin fasteners along the cowl panel using a trim removal tool. There are typically 8-10 fasteners across the cowl. Carefully lift the cowl panel weatherstrip. Remove the cowl top vent panel by lifting it up and away from the vehicle. Disconnect any washer hoses attached to the underside of the panel.
- 3Access wiper motor areaWith the cowl panel removed, you will now have clear access to the wiper motor assembly and linkage. Identify the wiper motor located on the passenger side of the cowl area. Locate the wiper motor electrical connector with its locking tab.
- 4Disconnect wiper motor electrical connectorPress the locking tab on the wiper motor electrical connector and carefully pull the connector away from the motor. Inspect the connector terminals for corrosion or damage. Clean if necessary with electrical contact cleaner.
- 5Remove wiper linkage from motorLocate the wiper linkage arm connection to the motor output shaft. Use a 10mm socket to remove the linkage retaining nut or clip. Carefully separate the linkage arm from the motor crank arm. Support the linkage to prevent it from falling or binding.
- 6Remove wiper motor mounting boltsLocate the three wiper motor mounting bolts securing the motor to the cowl support bracket. Use a 10mm socket to remove all mounting bolts. Support the wiper motor as you remove the final bolt to prevent it from dropping.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 7Remove wiper motor assemblyCarefully maneuver the wiper motor out of the cowl area. The motor may need to be rotated or angled to clear surrounding components. Inspect the mounting bracket and rubber isolators for wear or damage. Replace isolators if deteriorated.
- 8Install new wiper motorPosition the new wiper motor into the mounting location in the cowl area. Align the motor with the mounting holes on the support bracket. Ensure any rubber isolators are properly seated. Hand-start all three mounting bolts before tightening.
- 9Torque wiper motor mounting boltsUsing a torque wrench, tighten the wiper motor mounting bolts to specification in a star pattern to ensure even mounting pressure. Verify the motor sits flush against the mounting surface.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 10Reconnect wiper linkagePosition the wiper linkage arm onto the motor output crank arm. Ensure the linkage is properly seated on the crank. Install and tighten the linkage retaining nut or clip. Verify the linkage moves freely without binding.
- 11Reconnect electrical connectorPush the wiper motor electrical connector firmly onto the motor until you hear or feel the locking tab engage. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is locked in place.
- 12Reinstall cowl panelReconnect any washer hoses to the cowl panel. Position the cowl top vent panel back into place, ensuring all alignment tabs are properly seated. Install all push-pin fasteners by pressing them firmly into their holes. Replace the cowl weatherstrip.
- 13Reinstall wiper armsReconnect the battery negative terminal. Turn ignition to ON position and activate wipers briefly to ensure motor cycles to park position, then turn off. Position each wiper arm onto its splined shaft according to your reference marks. Install the wiper arm retaining nuts and tighten to secure. Install protective caps over nuts. Verify arms are in correct parked position.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Ensure all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
- Verify wiper linkage moves freely through full range of motion
- Check that all cowl panel fasteners are properly installed
- Confirm wiper arms are aligned with original positions marked on windshield
Verification
- Turn ignition to ON position and test wiper operation at all speeds (intermittent, low, high)
- Verify wipers return to proper park position when turned off
- Test washer fluid spray function while wipers are operating
- Listen for any unusual noises during wiper operation
- Confirm wiper blades make proper contact with windshield throughout entire sweep
- Check for proper wiper blade synchronization and spacing
