This procedure covers removal and replacement of the windshield wiper/washer switch assembly on the steering column of a 2021-2024 Ford F-150 with 3.5L EcoBoost engine.

Warnings

Disconnecting the battery will erase radio presets and require clock reset. Some vehicles may require a drive cycle to relearn idle settings.
Do not pull wiring harnesses excessively as connectors behind the steering column can be damaged.
ℹ️Ensure ignition is OFF and key fob is at least 10 feet away from vehicle before beginning work.

Parts

  • Windshield wiper/washer switch assembly × 1 — Use OEM Ford specification

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and apply parking brake
  2. Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key fob from vehicle interior
  3. Allow vehicle to sit for at least 2 minutes to allow airbag system capacitors to discharge
  4. Gather all tools and replacement switch before beginning disassembly

Procedure

  1. 1
    Disconnect battery negative terminal
Open hood and locate the battery. Using a 10mm socket or wrench, loosen and remove the negative (-) battery terminal bolt. Move the cable away from the terminal and secure it to prevent accidental reconnection. Wait at least 2 minutes before proceeding to allow airbag system to fully discharge.
    Torque spec
    Battery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
  2. 2
    Adjust steering column position
Adjust the steering wheel to its lowest tilt position and extend the telescoping column fully outward. This provides maximum access to the upper and lower steering column shroud fasteners.
  3. 3
    Remove lower steering column shroud
Locate the two T20 Torx screws on the underside of the lower steering column shroud. Remove both screws completely. Gently pull the lower shroud downward and away from the column, being careful not to force it. There are clips that will release with gentle pressure.
    Torque spec
    Cover Screws12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
  4. 4
    Remove upper steering column shroud
With the lower shroud removed, locate the upper shroud. There are typically two T20 Torx screws at the bottom edge of the upper shroud. Remove these screws. Carefully lift the upper shroud upward and off the steering column shaft. You may need to wiggle it slightly to clear the wiper/washer switch lever.

    Cover Screws12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
  5. 5
Locate and access wiper switch assembly
With both shrouds removed, you will see the multifunction switch assembly on the right side of the steering column (driver's perspective). The wiper/washer switch is the lever extending from this assembly. Use the shop light to identify the electrical connector and mounting fasteners.
  6. 6
    Disconnect wiper switch electrical connector
Locate the electrical connector at the base of the wiper switch assembly. Press the locking tab (usually on top or side of connector) and gently pull the connector straight out from the switch. Do not pull on the wires themselves. If connector is tight, gently rock it side to side while pulling.
  7. 7
    Remove wiper switch mounting fasteners
Locate the two mounting screws securing the wiper switch assembly to the steering column. These are typically T20 Torx or small Phillips head screws. Remove both screws completely and retain them if reusing. Note the orientation and position of the switch before removal.
    Torque spec
    Connector Screws4 Nm (3 lb-ft)
  8. 8
    Remove wiper switch assembly
With fasteners removed, carefully slide the wiper switch assembly away from the steering column. The switch lever will pull straight out from the column. Inspect the mounting points and electrical contacts for any damage or corrosion.
  9. 9
    Install new wiper switch assembly
Position the new wiper switch assembly in the same orientation as the original. Ensure the switch lever aligns properly with the opening in the steering column. Slide the assembly into place until it seats flush against the column mounting surface.
    Torque spec
    Connector Screws4 Nm (3 lb-ft)
  10. 10
    Reconnect electrical connector
Align the electrical connector with the switch socket and press firmly until you hear or feel a positive click. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is fully locked in place. Ensure no wires are pinched or kinked.
  11. 11
    Reinstall steering column shrouds
Position the upper shroud over the steering column shaft, carefully fitting it around the wiper switch lever and other controls. Install the upper shroud screws and tighten to specification. Position the lower shroud and engage the retaining clips, then install the lower shroud screws to specification.
    Torque spec
    Cover Screws12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
  12. 12
    Reconnect battery negative terminal
Return to the battery and reconnect the negative terminal cable. Position the cable on the negative post and install the terminal bolt. Tighten to specification using a torque wrench. Do not overtighten as this can damage the battery post.
    Torque spec
    Battery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all steering column shroud screws are tightened to proper torque specification
  2. Verify battery terminal is secure but not overtightened
  3. Return steering wheel to comfortable driving position
  4. Reset clock and radio presets as needed

Verification

  • Turn ignition to ON position (engine off) and verify instrument cluster illuminates with no warning lights related to wiper system
  • Test wiper switch in all positions: intermittent (all speed settings), low speed, high speed, and single wipe
  • Test washer function by pulling the wiper lever toward you - washers should spray and wipers should cycle
  • Verify wiper speed changes appropriately when adjusting intermittent wiper delay settings
  • Test wiper operation with engine running to confirm full functionality under normal conditions
  • Ensure wiper lever returns to proper position and has correct tactile feedback in all positions
  • Check that no warning lights appear on instrument cluster related to wiper system
  • Verify all steering column shroud panels are secure with no rattles or gaps
