Remove and replace the valve body in the 6R140 10-speed automatic transmission, including removal of transmission pan, filter, solenoid pack, and internal valve body assembly.
Warnings
⚠️Transmission fluid may be hot enough to cause severe burns. Allow vehicle to cool for at least 2 hours before draining.
⚠️The 6R140 valve body contains multiple pressurized check balls and springs that can be ejected during disassembly. Wear eye protection and work slowly.
⚠Mercon LV fluid is NOT backward compatible with Mercon LV or Mercon V. Contamination will cause transmission damage. Use only Mercon LV.
⚠No TCM reprogramming is required on the 6R140: after installing the valve body, write the new solenoid body strategy/ID into the TCM with a capable scan tool (Ford IDS/FDRS or equivalent), then complete an adaptive-learn drive cycle. (Corrected per a certified-tech report, 2026-07-19.)
⚠Work in an absolutely clean environment. A single grain of sand or piece of lint in the valve body can cause shift failures.
ℹ️Take detailed photos at each step of disassembly. The 6R140 valve body has multiple solenoids and harness connectors that must be routed exactly as original.
⚠️Manual valve rod clip: SLIDE it off the rod, never bend it back. A bent clip is permanently distorted and can cause total loss of transmission control. If it gets bent at all, replace the clip.
⚠️Clutch and pump feed seals must go back in the EXACT ports they came out of, and always install NEW seals and feed-tube O-rings lubricated with clean Mercon LV. Wrong port means pressure loss and transmission failure.
⚠Feed tube count differs by driveline: slip-yoke transmissions have 3 feed tubes, fixed-flange/4WD have 2. The 3 long bolts hold the valve body and the 3 short bolts hold the feed tubes.
⚠Valve body, separator plate, and solenoid retainer bolts are all 97 lb-IN (11 Nm). Inch-pounds, not foot-pounds.

Preparation
- Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake.
- Disconnect negative battery cable to prevent accidental solenoid energization during service.

- 3Remove transmission filterThe filter is located inside the pan area and secured by 3 bolts to the valve body. Remove these three 10mm bolts and carefully pull the filter straight down to disengage it from the valve body seal. Inspect the filter element for debris. Discard the old filter and seal.
- 4Disconnect solenoid wiring harnessLocate the internal wiring harness connector on the driver's side of the valve body. Depress the locking tab and carefully disconnect the main transmission control harness connector. Disconnect the 8 individual solenoid connectors by depressing their retention clips. Take a detailed photo of the harness routing before removal. Remove the 4 harness retaining clips from the valve body mounting bosses.⚠Do not pull on wires. Pull only on connector bodies to prevent terminal damage.
- 5Remove valve body mounting boltsThe 6R140 valve body is secured by 22 mounting bolts of two different lengths. Remove all 22 bolts in sequence starting from the outer perimeter and working inward. The 14 outer perimeter bolts are longer (approximately 45mm) and the 8 inner bolts are shorter (approximately 25mm). Keep bolts organized by length and position. - 6Remove valve body assemblyCarefully lower the valve body assembly straight down from the transmission case. The valve body weighs approximately 15-20 pounds. Support it with both hands and be prepared for residual fluid to drain. As you lower the valve body, guide the manual valve through its bore in the transmission case. The manual valve is a loose component connected to the manual shift linkage. Remove the manual valve and set it aside in a clean location. Place the old valve body on a clean work surface for inspection.⚠Do not tilt or invert the valve body during removal. Internal check balls and springs can fall out of position.
- 7Inspect transmission case and separator plateWith the valve body removed, inspect the separator plate (the flat metal plate with holes that remains bolted to the transmission case). Look for scoring, wear, or debris embedded in the plate surface. Inspect all fluid passages for obstructions. Clean the separator plate surface with lint-free rags and solvent. Do not remove the separator plate unless replacement is required. Inspect the transmission case valve body mounting surface for damage or warping.ℹ️If separator plate shows scoring or wear, it must be replaced with the valve body as a matched set.
- 8Prepare new valve body assemblyUnpack the new or remanufactured valve body. Verify that all solenoids are installed and that no shipping plugs or protective caps remain in fluid passages. Install new gaskets and seals onto the new valve body per the gasket kit instructions. Apply a light coating of clean Mercon LV fluid to all gasket surfaces. - 15Refill transmission fluidLocate the transmission fill plug on the passenger side of the transmission case (requires removal of a small cover). Using a fluid pump, refill the transmission with 12 quarts of Mercon LV fluid as an initial fill. Reconnect the negative battery cable. Start the engine and allow it to idle. With the engine running and the brake applied, shift through all gear positions (P-R-N-D and manual modes) pausing 3 seconds in each position. Return to Park. Check fluid level through the fill plug with engine running and transmission at operating temperature (160-180°F). Add fluid as needed to bring level to the bottom of the fill plug hole. Reassembly
- Reinstall skid plates and engine covers removed during preparation.
- Lower vehicle and perform final fluid level check with transmission at operating temperature.
- Perform a comprehensive test drive including multiple acceleration and deceleration cycles through all gears.
- Monitor transmission temperature during test drive to ensure it remains in normal range (160-200°F).
- After initial test drive, recheck fluid level and inspect for leaks around pan and drain plug.
Verification
- Verify no transmission fluid leaks from pan, drain plug, or any disturbed connections after 24 hours of normal operation.
- Confirm smooth shifts in all gears with no flaring, slipping, or harsh engagement.
- Use scan tool to verify no new transmission diagnostic codes have set.
- Monitor transmission fluid temperature during operation to ensure cooling system is functioning (should stabilize at 160-200°F).
- Verify correct fluid level at operating temperature with vehicle level.
- Confirm all transmission functions operate correctly: Park, Reverse, Neutral, Drive, and all manual shift modes.
- Verify TCM adaptive learning is progressing by monitoring shift adaptation values with scan tool over first 50-100 miles of operation.
