Preparation

    Depressurize fuel system

Attempt to start the engine and let it run until it stalls (usually 2-5 seconds). Crank the engine for an additional 3 seconds to ensure complete depressurization. Disconnect the battery negative terminal again.

    Loosen the hose clamp at the turbocharger inlet using a flathead screwdriver or socket. Disconnect the intake air duct from the turbocharger and air filter housing. Remove the duct to provide access to the fuel rail area.

    Locate the fuel supply line connection at the fuel rail (driver's side of engine). Using the appropriate fuel line disconnect tool, press the tabs and pull the quick-disconnect fitting straight off the fuel rail. Fuel will drain from the line; catch it in the drain pan. Cover the open line with a clean shop towel.
    Expect approximately 50-100ml of fuel to drain from the disconnected line.

    Disconnect the electrical connector from each of the four fuel injectors by pressing the release tab and pulling straight up. Unclip the injector wiring harness from the fuel rail brackets. Move the harness aside to provide clearance.

    Disconnect the fuel pressure regulator vacuum hose from the intake manifold. Disconnect any PCV or breather hoses attached to the fuel rail or that obstruct access to the fuel rail mounting bolts.

    Remove the two 10mm fuel rail mounting bolts. These are located at the ends of the fuel rail assembly. Keep these bolts organized as they will be torqued to specification during reassembly.

    Carefully pull the fuel rail straight up with even pressure on both ends. The fuel injectors will pull out of the intake manifold with the rail. Rock the assembly gently side-to-side if resistance is felt, but do not pry. Once free, place the assembly on a clean work surface with the injectors facing up.
    Do not bend or twist the fuel rail as this can damage injector seals or the rail itself.

    Inspect and prepare injector ports
    Inspect the fuel injector ports in the intake manifold for debris, carbon buildup, or damaged O-ring grooves. Clean the ports with a clean lint-free cloth. Do not allow any debris to fall into the intake manifold. Cover the open ports with clean shop towels if the rail will be off for an extended period.

    Install new fuel rail or prepare existing rail
    If installing a new fuel rail, transfer components as needed and verify all injectors are properly seated. If reusing the existing rail, inspect all O-rings on the fuel injectors and replace if damaged. Lightly lubricate new O-rings with clean engine oil. Install new O-rings on the fuel supply line connection point.

    Install fuel rail assembly
    Align all four fuel injectors with their respective ports in the intake manifold. Press the fuel rail down evenly with both hands, ensuring each injector enters its port straight without binding. Push down firmly until the rail seats completely and the mounting bolt holes align.
    Injectors must be installed straight to avoid damaging O-rings. If resistance is felt, remove and inspect for proper alignment.

    Install fuel rail mounting bolts
    Install the two fuel rail mounting bolts finger-tight, then torque them in an alternating pattern to specification using a torque wrench. This ensures even seating of all injectors.

    Reconnect fuel supply line
    Remove the protective covering from the fuel supply line. Push the quick-disconnect fitting straight onto the fuel rail connection until it clicks into place. Gently tug on the line to verify it is locked.

    Reconnect electrical and vacuum connections
    Reconnect the electrical connector to each fuel injector, ensuring each clicks into place. Reclip the wiring harness to the fuel rail brackets. Reconnect the fuel pressure regulator vacuum hose and any PCV or breather hoses removed earlier.

    Reinstall intake air duct
    Reinstall the intake air duct to the turbocharger inlet and air filter housing. Tighten the hose clamp at the turbocharger to specification.

Reassembly

  1. Reinstall the fuel pump relay in the under-hood fuse box

Verification
