Window Motor and Regulator - Rear

Remove and replace the rear window motor and regulator assembly, including removal of the interior door panel and electrical connections.

• Rear window regulator with motor assembly × 1 — Honda OEM or equivalent aftermarket regulator/motor assembly for 2016-2021 Civic
• Door panel clips (assorted) × 1 — Replacement trim clips as needed
• Vapor barrier adhesive × 1 — If vapor barrier is damaged during removal

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
2. Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 3 minutes for airbag system capacitor discharge
3. Roll rear window to full-up position using ignition-on power (before battery disconnect)
4. Gather all tools and replacement parts
5. Prepare workspace for door panel storage to avoid damage

Procedure

   Remove door panel fasteners
   Remove the screw from inside the interior door handle pull cup. Remove Phillips screw from the lower rear corner of the door panel near the latch striker. Use panel removal tool to carefully pry out the switch panel bezel from the armrest and disconnect electrical connectors for window and lock switches.

   Detach door panel
   Starting at the bottom rear corner, use panel removal tool to release the retaining clips around the perimeter of the door panel. Work your way around carefully to avoid breaking clips. Lift the panel upward to disengage it from the window sill, then pull away from door frame. Disconnect any remaining electrical connections including courtesy light if equipped.

   Remove vapor barrier access
   Carefully peel back or remove the plastic vapor barrier to access the window regulator and motor assembly. If sealed with adhesive, work slowly to avoid tearing. Create enough access to reach all mounting bolts and electrical connections.

   Secure window glass
   Apply painter's tape across the top of the window glass to the exterior door frame to hold the glass in the full-up position. This prevents the glass from falling when the regulator is disconnected. Alternatively, insert wood blocks between the glass and door frame at the bottom of the glass channel.

   Disconnect window motor electrical connector
   Locate the window motor electrical connector inside the door cavity. Press the locking tab and disconnect the connector from the motor. Ensure the connector is free and will not interfere with regulator removal.

   Separate glass from regulator
   Locate the two bolts or nuts securing the window glass to the regulator lift plate (typically 10mm). Remove these fasteners and carefully separate the glass from the regulator mechanism. Ensure the glass remains supported by the tape or blocks.

   Remove regulator mounting bolts
   Remove all regulator mounting bolts from the door frame. There are typically 3-4 bolts (10mm) securing the regulator assembly to the door. Note the position of any guide rails or support brackets attached to the regulator.

   Extract regulator assembly
   Carefully maneuver the window regulator and motor assembly out through the access opening in the door frame. The assembly may need to be rotated or angled to clear the door structure. Feed any cables through carefully to avoid snagging.

   Install new regulator assembly
   Insert the new window regulator and motor assembly into the door cavity through the access opening. Rotate and position it to align the mounting holes with the door frame. Ensure any cables or guide tracks are properly routed and not pinched.

    Secure regulator to door frame
    Install all regulator mounting bolts finger-tight first to ensure proper alignment. Once all bolts are started, torque the mounting bolts to specification in a cross-pattern to ensure even seating of the regulator against the door frame.

    Attach window glass to regulator
    Lower the window glass onto the regulator lift plate, aligning the mounting holes. Install the glass-to-regulator mounting bolts and torque to specification. Ensure the glass sits evenly in the regulator mechanism.

    Reconnect electrical and test
    Connect the window motor electrical connector, ensuring it clicks into place. Temporarily reconnect the negative battery terminal and ignition-on power. Test window operation through full up and down travel several times to verify smooth operation and proper alignment. Disconnect battery again for final reassembly.

    Reinstall vapor barrier and door panel
    Reposition and seal the vapor barrier, ensuring complete coverage. Apply new adhesive if necessary. Reconnect all electrical connectors to the door panel. Align the door panel with the window sill and push down to engage, then press firmly around the perimeter to seat all retaining clips. Reinstall all screws.

Reassembly

1. Ensure all door panel clips are properly seated and the panel is flush with the door frame
2. Verify all electrical connectors are fully engaged before final testing
3. Check that vapor barrier is completely sealed to prevent water intrusion

Verification

• Reconnect negative battery terminal and torque to 6.0 Nm (4.0 lb-ft)
• Test window operation through multiple full cycles in both directions
• Verify window seats properly at full-up position and aligns with door seal
• Listen for abnormal noises during operation - movement should be smooth and quiet
• Check that window auto-up/auto-down features work correctly (if equipped)
• Perform window reset/initialization procedure if required per owner's manual
• Inspect door panel fitment and verify all switches and features function properly
