Blend Door Actuator

This procedure covers removal and replacement of the HVAC blend door actuator, which controls temperature mixing in the climate control system of the 2016-2021 Honda Civic 1.5L Turbo.

• Blend door actuator × 1 — Honda OEM 79140-TBA-A41 or equivalent
• Plastic panel clips (assorted) × 5 — Replacement for any broken clips

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
2. Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key
3. Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait minimum 3 minutes
4. Allow HVAC system to cool if vehicle was recently operated
5. Set front passenger seat to full rearward position for access

Procedure

   Remove lower passenger glove box
   Open glove box fully. Remove contents. Locate and squeeze both sides of glove box inward to release stop tabs, allowing box to drop down fully. Remove screws securing glove box hinge assembly (typically 4-5 screws). Disconnect glove box damper arm if equipped. Remove glove box assembly completely.

   Remove lower passenger side kick panel
   Locate lower kick panel on passenger side below dashboard. Using trim removal tool, carefully pry out plastic clips securing panel (typically 3-4 clips). Pull panel away from firewall and set aside. Keep track of all clips for reinstallation.

   Remove lower dashboard panel cover
   Remove phillips screws securing lower dashboard cover below steering column area if present. Use trim tool to release plastic clips along bottom edge of lower dashboard panel. Carefully pull panel down and away. This provides access to HVAC unit behind dashboard.

   Locate blend door actuator
   Using flashlight, locate the blend door actuator on the HVAC unit. It is positioned on the passenger side of the HVAC housing, typically near the center-right area. The actuator is a small plastic motor unit with an electrical connector and 2-3 mounting screws. Note the position of the actuator arm relative to the door linkage before removal.

   Disconnect actuator electrical connector
   Press down on the locking tab of the electrical connector attached to the blend door actuator. Pull connector straight off the actuator. Do not pull on wiring harness - use connector body only.

   Remove actuator mounting screws
   Using phillips screwdriver, remove the mounting screws securing the blend door actuator to the HVAC housing (typically 2-3 screws). Keep screws organized for reinstallation. Note that access may be tight - a stubby screwdriver or ratcheting screwdriver may be helpful.

   Remove old actuator
   Gently pull the actuator away from the HVAC housing. The actuator arm should disengage from the blend door linkage. If resistance is felt, check that actuator arm is properly aligned with linkage slot. Rotate actuator slightly if needed while pulling to release. Remove actuator completely from vehicle.

   Prepare new actuator
   Remove new blend door actuator from packaging. Verify it matches the old unit in connector type and mounting pattern. Manually rotate the new actuator arm to approximately the same position as the old actuator was before removal. This ensures proper alignment with blend door linkage.

   Install new actuator
   Position new actuator near mounting location. Align actuator arm with blend door linkage slot. Gently push actuator into position while ensuring arm properly engages linkage. Do not force - if resistance occurs, check alignment of actuator arm. Seat actuator flush against HVAC housing mounting surface.

    Install actuator mounting screws
    Install the mounting screws through actuator into HVAC housing. Thread screws by hand first to prevent cross-threading. Using torque wrench and phillips bit, torque screws to specification in a cross pattern if multiple screws present.
    ⚠Do not overtighten screws as HVAC housing is plastic and threads can strip easily

    Reconnect electrical connector
    Push electrical connector firmly onto new actuator until locking tab clicks into place. Verify connector is fully seated by gently pulling on connector body - it should not come off.

    Test actuator operation
    Reconnect battery negative terminal. Turn ignition to ON position without starting engine. Activate climate control system and cycle temperature settings from full cold to full hot several times. Listen for smooth actuator motor operation without grinding or clicking noises. Verify temperature blend changes appropriately.

    Reinstall dashboard panels
    Reinstall lower dashboard cover panel by aligning clips and pressing firmly until all clips engage. Install cover screws to specification. Reinstall lower passenger kick panel by aligning and pressing clips into place.

    Reinstall glove box assembly
    Position glove box assembly and connect damper arm if equipped. Install glove box hinge screws hand-tight first, then verify smooth operation before final tightening. Close glove box and verify stop tabs engage properly when opening.

Reassembly

1. Verify all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
2. Ensure all dashboard panels are properly clipped and secured without gaps or rattles
3. Confirm all trim screws are installed and properly torqued
4. Replace any broken clips that were damaged during removal

Verification

• Start engine and allow HVAC system to reach operating temperature
• Test full range of temperature settings from coldest to hottest position
• Verify smooth temperature transitions without sudden changes or delays
• Listen for any abnormal clicking, grinding, or binding noises from actuator during operation
• Confirm airflow temperature matches selected setting on both driver and passenger sides
• Check that AUTO climate control mode functions properly if equipped
• Verify no dashboard warning lights related to climate control system are illuminated
