Preparation

  1. Ensure engine is cool to the touch

    Grasp the ignition coil body firmly and pull straight upward with a twisting motion. The coil may require moderate force to overcome the rubber boot seal. Do not rock the coil side to side excessively as this can damage the spark plug ceramic insulator.
    If the rubber boot remains in the spark plug tube, use needle-nose pliers to carefully extract it before installing the new coil.

    Inspect spark plug tube and well
    Use compressed air or a clean lint-free cloth to remove any debris, oil, or moisture from the spark plug tube. Check for oil accumulation which may indicate a valve cover gasket leak. If oil is present in the tube, the valve cover gasket should be replaced before installing new coils.

    If replacing coils due to misfire, inspect the spark plug for fouling, wear, or damage. Use a spark plug socket to remove the plug if necessary. If removing spark plugs, clean threads in cylinder head with compressed air before reinstalling or replacing plugs.

    Align the new ignition coil with the spark plug tube and push down firmly until the coil seats completely. The rubber boot must fully engage the spark plug terminal. You should feel the coil bottom out with firm resistance. Ensure the mounting bolt hole aligns with the threaded hole in the cylinder head.

    Thread the mounting bolt by hand to ensure proper thread engagement. Using a torque wrench and 10mm socket, tighten the bolt to specification. Do not overtighten as this can crack the coil body.
