This procedure covers removal and replacement of the ignition coil packs on the 2016-2021 Honda Civic 1.5L turbocharged engine. Each cylinder has an individual coil-on-plug assembly that sits directly above the spark plug.
Warnings
⚠Allow engine to cool for at least 30 minutes before beginning work. Turbocharger and exhaust components retain heat longer than normal engines.
⚠Do not pull on ignition coil wires. Always grasp the boot or coil body when removing.
ℹ️Spark plugs should be replaced if ignition coils are being replaced due to misfire. Consider inspecting or replacing spark plugs while coils are removed.

Preparation
- Ensure engine is cool to the touch
- Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
- Turn ignition off and remove key
- Open hood and secure with prop rod
Procedure
- 1Remove engine coverGrasp the engine cover firmly at the front edges and pull upward with steady pressure to release the rubber grommets from the mounting posts. Set the cover aside in a clean area.
- 2Disconnect ignition coil electrical connectorLocate the ignition coil for the cylinder being serviced. Press down on the connector lock tab and pull the electrical connector straight off the coil. The connector should release with minimal force. Note the routing of the wiring harness for reinstallation.
- 3Remove ignition coil mounting boltUsing a 10mm socket with extension, remove the single bolt securing the ignition coil to the cylinder head. Store the bolt in a safe location. The bolt is located on the side of the coil body.Torque specIgnition Coil Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 4Extract ignition coil from spark plug tubeGrasp the ignition coil body firmly and pull straight upward with a twisting motion. The coil may require moderate force to overcome the rubber boot seal. Do not rock the coil side to side excessively as this can damage the spark plug ceramic insulator.⚠If the rubber boot remains in the spark plug tube, use needle-nose pliers to carefully extract it before installing the new coil.
- 5Inspect spark plug tube and wellUse compressed air or a clean lint-free cloth to remove any debris, oil, or moisture from the spark plug tube. Check for oil accumulation which may indicate a valve cover gasket leak. If oil is present in the tube, the valve cover gasket should be replaced before installing new coils.
- 6Inspect spark plug condition (optional)If replacing coils due to misfire, inspect the spark plug for fouling, wear, or damage. Use a spark plug socket to remove the plug if necessary. If removing spark plugs, clean threads in cylinder head with compressed air before reinstalling or replacing plugs.ℹ️Apply a small amount of anti-seize compound to spark plug threads before installation to prevent seizing in the aluminum cylinder head.Torque specSpark Plugs - Aluminum Head20 Nm (15 lb-ft)
- 7Prepare new ignition coilInspect the new ignition coil for any damage. Apply a thin coating of dielectric grease to the inside of the rubber boot that seats onto the spark plug. This ensures a good seal and makes future removal easier. Do not apply excessive grease.
- 8Install new ignition coilAlign the new ignition coil with the spark plug tube and push down firmly until the coil seats completely. The rubber boot must fully engage the spark plug terminal. You should feel the coil bottom out with firm resistance. Ensure the mounting bolt hole aligns with the threaded hole in the cylinder head.
- 9Install ignition coil mounting boltThread the mounting bolt by hand to ensure proper thread engagement. Using a torque wrench and 10mm socket, tighten the bolt to specification. Do not overtighten as this can crack the coil body.Torque specIgnition Coil Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 10Reconnect electrical connectorPush the electrical connector onto the ignition coil until you hear and feel a positive click. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is locked in place. Route the wiring harness in the original position to avoid contact with hot or moving components.
- 11Reinstall engine coverAlign the engine cover grommets with the mounting posts on the valve cover and intake manifold. Press down firmly on all mounting points until the cover is fully seated. Ensure the cover is secure and not loose.
Reassembly
- Verify all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
- Confirm engine cover is properly installed on all mounting points
- Check that no tools or parts were left in the engine bay
Verification
- Start the engine and verify it runs smoothly with no misfires or rough idle
- Check for any diagnostic trouble codes using an OBD-II scanner. Clear any existing misfire codes and verify they do not return
- Listen for any abnormal clicking or arcing sounds from the ignition coil area
- Allow engine to reach operating temperature and verify smooth operation under light acceleration
- If multiple coils were replaced, verify firing order and installation are correct for cylinders 1-2-3-4 (front to back when facing engine)
