Remove and replace the engine cooling fan assembly on a 2016-2021 Honda Civic 1.5L Turbo, including disconnecting electrical connectors and removing mounting hardware.

Warnings

⚠️Allow engine to cool completely before beginning work. Hot coolant and components can cause severe burns.
Do not operate cooling fan with ignition on during removal. Fan may activate automatically if coolant temperature is high.
ℹ️This procedure does not require coolant draining if you work carefully and do not disturb radiator hoses.

Parts

  • Cooling fan assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification or quality aftermarket
  • Radiator upper mount cushions (if damaged) × 2 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Ensure engine is completely cold to the touch
  2. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  3. Open hood and secure with prop rod
  4. Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 3 minutes to allow electrical system to discharge
  5. Remove engine cover by pulling upward on front edge to release clips

Procedure

  1. 1
    Access cooling fan assembly
Remove the air intake duct and air box if they obstruct access to the cooling fan. On most 1.5T models, you can access the fan without full air box removal. Remove any wire harness clips or brackets attached to the radiator shroud that may interfere with fan removal.
  2. 2
    Disconnect cooling fan electrical connector
Locate the cooling fan motor electrical connector on the driver's side of the fan shroud. Press the release tab and pull the connector straight out from the fan motor. Move the wiring harness clear of the fan assembly.
  3. 3
    Remove upper radiator mounting bolts
Locate the two upper radiator support mounting bolts at the top corners of the radiator. These are 10mm bolts that secure the radiator and fan assembly to the upper radiator support. Remove both bolts completely and set aside. The radiator will remain supported by the lower mounts.
  4. 4
Remove cooling fan assembly mounting bolts
The cooling fan shroud is secured to the radiator with mounting bolts on each side and possibly at the bottom. Remove all mounting bolts (typically 10mm) that secure the fan shroud to the radiator. There are usually 4-6 bolts total around the perimeter of the fan shroud.

    Mounting Bolts26 Nm (19 lb-ft)
  5. 5
Lift fan assembly out of engine bay
Carefully lift the cooling fan assembly straight up and out of the engine compartment. The fan shroud may need to be tilted slightly to clear the radiator and surrounding components. Be careful not to contact the radiator fins or AC condenser as you remove the assembly. Watch for any remaining wire clips or fasteners.
  6. 6
    Inspect radiator mounting cushions
With the fan removed, inspect the upper radiator mounting cushions for cracks, deterioration, or compression. These rubber cushions support the radiator at the upper mounting points. Replace if damaged or excessively compressed.
  7. 7
    Install new cooling fan assembly
Guide the new cooling fan assembly into position, aligning the mounting points with the radiator. Lower the assembly carefully, ensuring the fan shroud seats properly against the radiator and that mounting holes align. The bottom of the shroud should engage with any lower clips or tabs on the radiator.
  8. 8
    Install fan assembly mounting bolts
Install all fan shroud mounting bolts and hand-tighten first to ensure proper alignment. Once all bolts are started, torque them to specification in a cross pattern to ensure even seating of the shroud against the radiator.

  9. 9
    Reinstall upper radiator mounting bolts
Reinstall the two upper radiator support mounting bolts at the top corners of the radiator. These bolts secure the radiator to the upper support bracket. Tighten securely but do not overtorque as they thread into plastic or composite material.
  10. 10
    Reconnect electrical connector and harness
Reconnect the cooling fan electrical connector to the fan motor until it clicks into place. Verify the connection is secure by gently pulling on it. Reinstall any wire harness clips or brackets to secure the wiring to the radiator shroud or support.

Reassembly

  1. Reinstall engine cover by aligning clips and pressing down firmly until all clips engage
  2. Reinstall air intake duct and air box components if removed
  3. Reconnect negative battery terminal and tighten securely
  4. Close hood after verifying all tools and parts have been removed from engine bay

Verification

  • Start engine and allow to reach operating temperature while monitoring coolant temperature gauge
  • Verify cooling fan activates when coolant temperature reaches approximately 200-210°F (93-99°C)
  • Listen for unusual noises from the fan assembly during operation
  • Verify fan motor runs smoothly without vibration or wobble
  • Turn on air conditioning and verify fan operates at high speed when AC is active
  • Check for proper clearance between fan blades and shroud during operation
  • Scan for diagnostic trouble codes related to cooling fan operation
