Complete disassembly, inspection, and rebuild of the front differential assembly in a 2016-2021 Honda Civic 1.5L Turbo, including bearing replacement, gear inspection, and reassembly with new seals and proper shimming.

Warnings

⚠️Vehicle must be securely supported on jack stands rated for the vehicle weight. Never work under a vehicle supported only by a floor jack.
⚠️Axle nuts are torqued to 232 Nm and require significant force to remove. Ensure vehicle is stable and parking brake is applied before attempting removal.
Differential bearings and races must be pressed on/off. Improper installation will cause premature failure. Use proper bearing installation tools only.
Differential shimming requires precise measurement. Incorrect preload will cause noise, vibration, and premature wear.
Honda DW-1 ATF is required for the transaxle. Do not substitute with other fluids.
ℹ️This procedure requires advanced mechanical knowledge and specialized tools. Differential rebuild experience is highly recommended.

    Fill Plug39 Nm (29 lb-ft)
    Axle Nut232 Nm (171 lb-ft)
  2. 2
Disconnect CV joints and remove axles
Remove the six 10mm CV joint-to-inner joint bolts on both driver and passenger sides. Support axles and carefully pull outward to disengage from differential. Keep axles supported and secured away from work area. Mark orientation of both axles (left/right) for reinstallation.
    Torque spec
    CV Bolts58 Nm (43 lb-ft)
  3. 3
    Remove differential cover
Remove all differential cover bolts in a crisscross pattern. Carefully pry cover loose using appropriate pry points (do not pry on machined sealing surfaces). Remove cover and old gasket/RTV material. Inspect cover for cracks or damage. Clean all old RTV from both cover and housing using scraper, ensuring no debris falls into differential.
Do not pry on machined aluminum surfaces as this will cause leaks. Use designated pry points only.
    Torque spec
    Cover Bolts32 Nm (24 lb-ft)
  4. 4
Mark and remove ring gear assembly
Use permanent marker to mark the relationship between ring gear and differential case for reassembly reference. Mark bearing caps and housing for proper reinstallation orientation. Remove bearing cap bolts and carefully lift out the entire differential assembly. Place on clean workbench. Inspect ring gear teeth for wear, pitting, or damage.
ℹ️Bearing caps are machined matched sets and must be reinstalled in original positions.
  5. 5
    Disassemble differential case
Remove ring gear bolts (these are one-time use and must be replaced). Separate ring gear from differential case. Remove side bearing retaining hardware (snap rings or retainers depending on design). Using appropriate bearing puller, remove both side bearings from differential case. Mark all shims and their positions for reference during reassembly. Remove pinion shaft lock pin/bolt and slide out pinion shaft. Remove pinion gears, side gears, and thrust washers, keeping all components organized.
Ring gear bolts are torque-to-yield and must be replaced with new OEM bolts during reassembly.
  6. 6
Remove and inspect pinion gear assembly
Remove pinion nut (if applicable to this transaxle design). Using bearing puller, remove pinion gear assembly along with bearings, spacers, and shims. Keep all shims in order and measure/record thickness. Inspect pinion gear teeth for wear pattern, pitting, or damage. Measure pinion bearing preload before disassembly if possible. Remove and discard pinion seal.
ℹ️Document all shim locations and thicknesses. These measurements are critical for proper reassembly preload.
  7. 7
    Inspect and measure all components
Thoroughly clean all gears, bearings, and housing in solvent. Inspect ring gear and pinion for tooth contact pattern issues, scoring, pitting, or excessive wear. Measure differential case bore diameter and runout. Inspect all bearing races in housing - remove if damaged using race puller. Measure all gear backlash points. Check side gear and pinion gear tooth contact. Replace any components showing wear beyond Honda specifications.
Ring and pinion gears are matched sets. If either shows damage, both must be replaced together.
  8. 8
    Install new bearing races
If bearing races were removed, install new races using appropriate bearing race driver. Ensure races are fully seated and square in housing bores. Tap evenly around circumference until fully seated (should not move when pressed). Clean races thoroughly after installation to remove any installation debris.
Bearing races must be installed square and fully seated. Cocked races will cause bearing failure.
  9. 9
    Reassemble differential case
Install thrust washers, side gears, pinion gears, and pinion shaft into differential case. Align pinion shaft lock pin hole and install new lock pin/bolt per specifications. Check that gears rotate smoothly without binding. Press new side bearings onto differential case using bearing driver on inner race only. Install shims based on original measurements (final adjustment will be made during setup).
Never press on bearing outer race or balls. Press only on inner race when installing bearings onto shafts.
  10. 10
Install ring gear to differential case
Clean ring gear and differential case mating surfaces thoroughly. Align ring gear to differential case using original reference marks. Install new ring gear bolts and torque in a crisscross pattern to Honda specifications (verify exact torque in service manual as these are critical). Verify ring gear runout with dial indicator - should not exceed 0.05mm (0.002 inch).
Ring gear bolt torque is critical. Follow exact torque sequence and specifications from Honda service manual.
  11. 11
    Assemble and shim pinion gear
Press new pinion bearings onto pinion shaft using bearing driver on inner race. Install pinion depth shim (use original thickness as starting point). Install pinion gear assembly into housing with spacers and shims. Using service manual shim charts and measurements taken during disassembly, select appropriate shims to achieve specified pinion depth and bearing preload. Measure preload with inch-pound torque wrench - should meet Honda specifications (typically 5-15 in-lb for new bearings).
ℹ️Pinion depth and preload shimming may require multiple trial fits. This is normal and necessary for proper gear contact.
  12. 12
Install differential assembly and set backlash
Install differential assembly with bearing caps in original marked positions. Install bearing cap bolts finger-tight. Using feeler gauges and dial indicator, measure ring gear to pinion backlash at multiple points around ring gear. Adjust side bearing shims to achieve specified backlash (typically 0.10-0.15mm or 0.004-0.006 inch). Move shims from one side to the other to adjust backlash while maintaining proper bearing preload. Torque bearing cap bolts to specification once backlash is correct.
Backlash must be measured at minimum 4 points around ring gear. Variation should not exceed 0.05mm (0.002 inch).
  13. 13
    Check gear tooth contact pattern
Apply gear marking compound to several ring gear teeth. Rotate pinion gear through several complete revolutions in both directions while applying light resistance. Inspect tooth contact pattern on ring gear teeth. Pattern should be centered on tooth face with proper length and position per Honda service manual. Adjust shims if necessary to correct pattern. Repeat until acceptable pattern is achieved.
ℹ️Proper gear tooth contact is essential for quiet operation and long life. Do not skip this verification step.
  14. 14
    Install new pinion seal
Clean pinion seal bore thoroughly. Apply small amount of Honda DW-1 ATF to seal lip. Using seal driver, install new pinion seal squarely into bore until fully seated. Seal should be flush or slightly below housing surface per specifications. Check seal for proper installation - should not be cocked or damaged.
  15. 15
    Install differential cover and refill
Clean cover and housing mating surfaces completely. Apply continuous 3mm bead of RTV sealant (Honda Bond) to cover sealing surface. Install cover within 5 minutes of applying RTV. Install cover bolts and torque in crisscross pattern to specification. Allow RTV to cure for minimum 30 minutes before filling. Install drain plug with new washer. Fill transaxle with Honda DW-1 ATF through fill hole until fluid reaches bottom of fill hole threads. Install fill plug and torque to specification.
Cover must be installed within 5 minutes of RTV application. Have all bolts ready before applying sealant.

    Cover Bolts32 Nm (24 lb-ft)
    Drain Plug39 Nm (29 lb-ft)
    Fill Plug39 Nm (29 lb-ft)
  16. 16
    Reinstall axles
Clean axle splines and apply small amount of Honda DW-1 ATF. Install axles into differential, ensuring proper engagement of circlips. Verify axles are fully seated by attempting to pull outward. Connect CV joints to inner joints and install six bolts per side. Torque CV bolts to specification in star pattern. Install new axle nuts finger-tight (final torque with wheels on ground).
    Torque spec
    CV Bolts58 Nm (43 lb-ft)

Reassembly

  1. Install wheels and torque lug nuts to 108 Nm (80 lb-ft) in star pattern
  2. Lower vehicle to ground and torque both axle nuts to 232 Nm (171 lb-ft) with vehicle on ground and parking brake applied
  3. Install new cotter pins through axle nut castellations
  4. Reconnect negative battery terminal
  5. Check fluid level after test drive and top off if necessary

Verification

  • Start engine and shift through all gears while stationary - should engage smoothly without grinding
  • Test drive vehicle and listen for differential whine, grinding, or abnormal noise during acceleration and deceleration
  • Check for fluid leaks around differential cover and axle seals after test drive
  • Verify proper operation in all gears under load
  • Recheck fluid level after vehicle reaches operating temperature - adjust if needed
  • Monitor differential for first 500 miles for any noise development or leaks
