Parts
- EVAP vent valve (canister vent shut valve) × 1 — 36162-5AA-A01 or equivalent OEM
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level ground and apply parking brake
- Place wheel chocks at front wheels
- Allow engine to cool completely if recently driven
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 3 minutes to clear residual power
- Raise rear of vehicle and support securely on jack stands at manufacturer-specified jacking points
- Remove left rear wheel for better access (optional but recommended)
Procedure
- 1Access the EVAP vent valve locationFrom under the vehicle, locate the EVAP vent valve assembly mounted on or near the charcoal canister, positioned ahead of the fuel tank on the left side of the vehicle. Remove any splash shields or undertray panels blocking access using 10mm socket. The vent valve is a small cylindrical component with an electrical connector and two hose connections.
- 2Disconnect electrical connectorPress the locking tab on the electrical connector and pull straight away from the EVAP vent valve. Do not pull on the wiring; use the connector body. Inspect the connector terminals for corrosion or damage.
- 3Disconnect fresh air hoseLocate the fresh air hose (connects to atmosphere) on one side of the valve. Squeeze the quick-connect fitting tabs or loosen the hose clamp and carefully twist while pulling to remove the hose from the valve port. Note the orientation for reassembly.Torque specHose Clamps3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
- 4Disconnect canister hoseLocate the canister hose (connects to charcoal canister) on the other side of the valve. Squeeze the quick-connect fitting tabs or loosen the hose clamp and carefully twist while pulling to remove the hose from the valve port. Inspect hoses for cracks or damage.
- 5Remove mounting hardwareRemove the mounting bolt or bracket securing the EVAP vent valve to the vehicle chassis or canister assembly using a 10mm socket. The valve may be held by a single bolt or a bracket with multiple fasteners.Torque specMounting Bolts26 Nm (19 lb-ft)
- 6Remove EVAP vent valveCarefully remove the EVAP vent valve from its mounting location. Inspect the mounting area and hose connections for debris or damage. Clean the mounting surface if necessary.
- 7Install new EVAP vent valvePosition the new EVAP vent valve in the mounting location, ensuring proper orientation with hose ports aligned to their respective hoses. The valve should be oriented with the fresh air port pointing downward and away from potential water intrusion. Install mounting bolt or bracket finger-tight initially.
- 8Torque mounting hardwareTorque the mounting bolt to specification using a torque wrench. Ensure the valve is properly seated and aligned before final torquing.Torque specMounting Bolts26 Nm (19 lb-ft)
- 9Reconnect canister hosePush the canister hose firmly onto the appropriate valve port until it clicks or seats completely. If using clamp-style connection, position hose clamp properly and torque to specification. Verify connection is secure by attempting to pull hose off.Torque specHose Clamps3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
- 10Reconnect fresh air hosePush the fresh air hose firmly onto the appropriate valve port until it clicks or seats completely. If using clamp-style connection, position hose clamp properly and torque to specification. Verify connection is secure by attempting to pull hose off.Torque specHose Clamps3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
- 11Reconnect electrical connectorPush the electrical connector onto the EVAP vent valve until it clicks and locks securely. Verify the locking tab is fully engaged. Gently tug on the connector to confirm it is locked.
- 12Reinstall shields and wheelReinstall any splash shields or undertray panels removed for access. If wheel was removed, reinstall and torque lug nuts to Honda specification (108 Nm / 80 lb-ft). Lower vehicle from jack stands.
- 13Reconnect battery and clear codesReconnect the negative battery terminal. Use an OBD-II scanner to clear any EVAP-related diagnostic trouble codes that may have been stored. The system will need to complete a drive cycle for the monitor to reset.
Reassembly
- Ensure all hose connections are secure and properly seated
- Verify electrical connector is locked and not loose
- Double-check that mounting bolt is torqued to specification
- Confirm no tools or parts are left under the vehicle
Verification
- Start the engine and verify no unusual sounds from the EVAP system
- Check for diagnostic trouble codes using an OBD-II scanner; no new codes should be present
- Perform an EVAP system function test using a scan tool if available (valve should click when commanded open/closed)
- Drive vehicle through a complete drive cycle to allow EVAP monitor to complete
- Verify Check Engine Light does not illuminate after driving
- Visually inspect the valve area after test drive for any signs of vapor leaks or loose connections
