Exhaust Hangers

This procedure covers the inspection and replacement of rubber exhaust hangers that support the exhaust system on the 2016-2021 Honda Civic 1.5L Turbo.

• Exhaust hanger rubber isolator × 1 — 18215-SNA-A01 or equivalent OEM

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and apply parking brake
2. Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
3. Allow exhaust system to cool completely (minimum 1 hour after engine operation)
4. Raise vehicle using floor jack at manufacturer lift points and support with jack stands
5. Visually inspect entire exhaust system from underneath to identify which hangers need replacement

Procedure

   Locate exhaust hangers
   The 1.5L Turbo Civic typically has 4-5 rubber hanger locations along the exhaust system. Identify all hanger points: one near the catalytic converter, one or two at the mid-pipe section, and one or two at the rear muffler. Each hanger consists of a metal hook on the exhaust component and a rubber isolator attached to the vehicle chassis.

   Inspect hanger condition
   Check each rubber hanger for cracks, tears, excessive wear, or separation from the metal mounting points. Look for signs of the exhaust sitting too low or making contact with the underbody heat shields. Failed hangers will appear stretched, torn, or completely separated.

   Support exhaust system
   If replacing a hanger, use a floor jack with a block of wood or rubber pad to gently support the exhaust system near the hanger being replaced. Apply just enough upward pressure to relieve tension on the hanger but do not force the exhaust upward.

   Remove old hanger from chassis bracket
   Using a flathead screwdriver or pry bar, carefully pry the rubber hanger off the metal chassis bracket. Work the screwdriver between the rubber and bracket, twisting gently to pop the hanger free. If the hanger is severely deteriorated, it may need to be cut off with a utility knife.

   Remove hanger from exhaust hook
   Once free from the chassis bracket, pull and twist the rubber hanger to remove it from the metal hook welded to the exhaust pipe. Apply penetrating oil if the rubber is stuck. Use the screwdriver to pry if necessary, being careful not to damage the metal hook.

   Clean mounting points
   Clean both the chassis bracket and exhaust hook with a wire brush or rag to remove any rust, debris, or old rubber residue. Inspect the metal hook on the exhaust for damage or excessive rust that could cause premature hanger failure.

   Install new hanger onto exhaust hook
   Slide one end of the new rubber hanger onto the metal hook on the exhaust pipe. You may need to spray the rubber with soapy water to ease installation. Ensure the hanger is fully seated on the hook with the orientation matching the chassis bracket position.

   Install hanger onto chassis bracket
   While supporting the exhaust at the proper height with the jack, stretch the rubber hanger and hook it onto the chassis bracket. Use a pry bar or screwdriver to help stretch and guide the hanger into place. Ensure the hanger is fully seated on both the exhaust hook and chassis bracket.

   Remove exhaust support and verify alignment
   Carefully lower and remove the floor jack supporting the exhaust. Verify the exhaust hangs at the proper height with adequate clearance from the chassis, fuel tank, and heat shields. The exhaust should be centered in the rear bumper opening with even gaps on both sides.

    Check all hanger locations
    Inspect all remaining exhaust hangers even if not replaced to ensure they are properly seated and secure. Gently push up and down on various points of the exhaust system to verify all hangers are holding securely and the system returns to proper position.

Reassembly

1. Lower vehicle from jack stands
2. Remove wheel chocks

Verification

• Start engine and listen for any new exhaust rattles or unusual noises that could indicate improper hanger installation
• With engine running, verify no excessive exhaust system movement or vibration
• Visually inspect from rear of vehicle that exhaust tips are centered in bumper cutouts
• After test drive, re-inspect hangers to ensure they remain properly seated and exhaust maintains proper clearance
