Parts
- Fuel filler cap × 1 — Honda OEM or equivalent with tether
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and turn off engine
- Allow fuel system to cool if vehicle was recently driven
- Open fuel filler door by pulling release lever on driver side floor
Procedure
- 1Remove old fuel capTurn the fuel cap counterclockwise until it releases from the filler neck. You will hear clicking sounds as the ratcheting mechanism disengages. Continue turning until the cap is completely free.
- 2Inspect filler neck sealCheck the rubber seal inside the fuel filler neck for damage, debris, or deterioration. Clean any dirt or debris from the filler neck opening with a clean cloth if necessary.
- 3Disconnect tether if necessaryIf replacing the cap, disconnect the tether from the old cap by pressing the release tab on the tether connector. Note the orientation for reinstallation.
- 4Attach new fuel cap tetherConnect the tether to the new fuel cap by inserting the tether connector into the cap mount until it clicks into place. Verify it is securely attached by gently pulling on the tether.
- 5Install new fuel capPlace the new fuel cap onto the filler neck and turn clockwise. Continue turning until you hear at least 3 distinct clicks from the ratcheting mechanism, indicating proper sealing and torque. Do not over-tighten past the clicking point.
Reassembly
- Close the fuel filler door until it latches securely
- Verify the tether allows the cap to reach the filler neck without excessive tension
Verification
- Start the engine and verify no check engine light appears related to fuel system evaporative emissions (P0455, P0456, P0457 codes)
- Ensure the fuel cap clicks at least 3 times when properly tightened
- Confirm the tether is securely attached and the fuel door closes properly
- Drive vehicle through at least one complete drive cycle to verify the evaporative emissions system operates correctly with the new cap
