This procedure covers replacement of a single headlight bulb on a 2016-2021 Honda Civic with the 1.5L turbocharged engine.

Warnings

Allow headlight assembly to cool completely before attempting bulb replacement to avoid burns
Do not touch the glass portion of halogen bulbs with bare hands as skin oils will cause premature failure
ℹ️This procedure applies to low beam headlights; high beam replacement follows similar steps but accesses different bulb position

Tools required

Nitrile glovesEssential
Flathead screwdriver
Shop towel

Parts

  • H11 halogen bulb or LED replacement × 1 — Use OEM specification or aftermarket equivalent

Preparation

  1. Ensure vehicle is parked on level surface with engine off and cooled
  2. Turn headlight switch to OFF position
  3. Open hood and prop securely
  4. Put on nitrile gloves to prevent skin oils from contaminating new bulb

Procedure

  1. 1
Access headlight assembly from engine bay
Locate the headlight assembly from behind in the engine bay. The driver side has more clearance; the passenger side may require moving the coolant reservoir aside for better access. Identify the low beam bulb housing, which is the larger circular cover on the back of the headlight assembly.
  2. 2
    Disconnect bulb electrical connector
Press the release tab on the electrical connector attached to the back of the bulb housing and pull straight back to disconnect. Do not pull on the wires themselves. Set the connector aside where it won't fall into the engine bay.
  3. 3
    Remove bulb dust cover
Rotate the rubber dust cover counterclockwise approximately 1/4 turn and pull it straight out from the back of the headlight assembly. Inspect the seal for cracks or deterioration and replace if necessary.
  4. 4
    Release bulb retaining clip
Locate the wire retaining clip that holds the bulb in place. Press down on the clip and swing it out of the way to release the bulb. The clip remains attached to the housing and does not need to be removed completely.
  5. 5
    Remove failed bulb
Carefully pull the old bulb straight out from the socket. Avoid twisting or forcing the bulb. Inspect the bulb socket for signs of corrosion, melting, or damage. Clean any corrosion with electrical contact cleaner if necessary.
  6. 6
    Install new bulb
Remove the new bulb from packaging while wearing gloves. Align the bulb tabs with the slots in the socket and insert straight in until fully seated. Ensure the bulb base is flush against the housing. Do not force or twist.
  7. 7
    Secure bulb with retaining clip
Swing the wire retaining clip back into position over the bulb base and press firmly until it clicks into place. Verify the clip is fully engaged and holding the bulb securely.
  8. 8
    Reinstall dust cover
Align the rubber dust cover with the housing and press it into place. Rotate clockwise approximately 1/4 turn to lock it in position. Ensure the seal is seated properly around the entire perimeter to prevent moisture intrusion.
  9. 9
    Reconnect electrical connector
Align the electrical connector with the bulb terminals and push firmly until it clicks into place. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is fully seated and locked.

Reassembly

  1. If coolant reservoir was moved for access, return it to original position and verify hoses are not kinked
  2. Close hood securely

Verification

  • Start vehicle and turn on headlights to verify new bulb illuminates properly
  • Check that beam pattern is correct and headlight is aimed properly
  • Verify no warning lights are illuminated on instrument cluster
  • Visually inspect from outside vehicle that headlight brightness matches the opposite side
