Preparation
- Ensure the engine is completely cool to the touch (minimum 2 hours after shutdown)
- Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
- Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical faults
- Place drain pan under the engine to catch coolant spillage
- Locate the heater control valve on the firewall near the heater core inlet hoses on the passenger side
Procedure
- 1Relieve cooling system pressureSlowly rotate the radiator cap counterclockwise to the first stop and allow any residual pressure to escape. Once pressure is fully released, remove the cap completely. This prevents coolant spray when disconnecting hoses.
- 2Drain partial coolantOpen the radiator drain valve located at the bottom of the radiator on the driver's side. Drain approximately 1-2 quarts of coolant into the drain pan. This reduces coolant loss when disconnecting the heater control valve. Close the drain valve once sufficient coolant is drained.
- 3Disconnect electrical connectorLocate the electrical connector on the heater control valve body. Press the locking tab and pull the connector straight off the valve. Move the wiring harness aside to provide clearance for valve removal.
- 4Remove inlet hose clampUsing a flat blade screwdriver or hose clamp pliers, loosen the hose clamp securing the coolant inlet hose to the heater control valve. Slide the clamp back along the hose away from the valve connection point.
- 5Disconnect inlet hoseTwist the inlet hose gently while pulling it off the heater control valve nipple. Be prepared for coolant spillage. Have shop towels ready to catch residual coolant. Allow hose to drain into the drain pan.⚠Coolant will spill from both the hose and valve when disconnected. Keep drain pan positioned to catch fluid.
- 6Remove outlet hose clampLoosen the hose clamp on the outlet side of the heater control valve using the same method as the inlet. Slide the clamp back along the hose to provide clearance.
- 7Disconnect outlet hoseTwist and pull the outlet hose off the heater control valve nipple. Again, expect coolant spillage and use shop towels to minimize mess. Position drain pan to catch fluid from both connections.
- 8Remove valve mounting hardwareRemove the mounting bolt(s) securing the heater control valve bracket to the firewall or mounting location. Keep track of all mounting hardware and bracket orientation for reinstallation.Torque specValve Mounting8 Nm (6 lb-ft)

- 14Refill coolant systemFill the cooling system through the radiator opening with Honda Type 2 (Blue) coolant until the level reaches the bottom of the radiator neck. Reinstall the radiator cap. Fill the coolant reserve tank to the MAX line with the same coolant.
- 15Bleed cooling systemReconnect the negative battery terminal. Start the engine and allow it to idle with the heater set to maximum temperature and fan speed. Run the engine until the cooling fans cycle on and off at least twice. Monitor coolant level in the reserve tank and add coolant as needed. Check for leaks around all hose connections.⚠Monitor engine temperature gauge closely. If temperature rises above normal, shut off engine immediately and recheck for leaks or air pockets.
Reassembly
- Ensure all hose clamps are torqued to specification and positioned correctly on the hose nipples
- Verify electrical connector is fully seated and locked
- Double-check coolant level in the reserve tank after the engine has cooled completely
- Perform idle relearn procedure if vehicle experiences rough idle: Drive vehicle normally for 10-15 minutes allowing engine to fully warm up and reach closed-loop operation
Verification
- With engine at operating temperature, verify heat output from cabin vents is strong and consistent when heater is set to maximum
- Check for coolant leaks around both heater control valve hose connections with engine running
- Verify no warning lights or fault codes related to cooling system are present
- Confirm coolant level in reserve tank remains stable at MAX line after several heat cycles
- Test heater control valve operation by adjusting temperature settings and verifying immediate temperature changes at the vents
