Expert-verified. Personally reviewed and approved by OLP's master technicians (Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — 20+ years each). Always follow the vehicle's factory service information and torque specs.

This procedure covers the replacement of a failed HID ballast on a 2016-2021 Honda Civic with factory HID headlights. The ballast is accessed from the engine bay or wheel well area depending on which side is being replaced.

Warnings

⚠️HID ballasts operate at extremely high voltage (up to 25,000V). Allow headlights to remain off for at least 5 minutes before beginning work to allow capacitors to discharge.
Do not touch HID bulbs with bare hands. Oils from skin can cause hot spots and premature bulb failure.
The ballast connector retains high voltage even after the lights are turned off. Never disconnect while headlights are on or engine is running.

Parts

  • HID ballast assembly × 1 — Use OEM Honda part or Denso/Koito equivalent for 35W D2S system
  • Dielectric grease × 1 — Honda Shin-Etsu or equivalent

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and turn off engine
  2. Turn headlights OFF and remove key from ignition. Wait at least 5 minutes for HID system to fully discharge
  3. Open hood and secure with prop rod
  4. Identify which side (driver or passenger) has the failed ballast - typically diagnosed by flickering, delayed start, or no illumination on one side
  5. For driver side access, consider removing battery or loosening air intake tube for better clearance

Procedure

  1. 1
    Disconnect battery negative terminal
Using a 10mm socket, loosen the battery negative terminal bolt. Remove the negative cable and secure it away from the battery post to prevent accidental reconnection during the repair.
    Torque spec
    Battery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
  2. 2
    Remove headlight access cover
Locate the circular or rectangular rubber/plastic access cover on the rear of the headlight assembly. Twist counterclockwise or pull tabs to remove the cover, exposing the HID bulb and ballast connector area.
  3. 3
Disconnect HID bulb connector from ballast
Locate the high-voltage connector between the ballast and HID bulb. Press the release tab and gently pull straight out to disconnect. Do not twist or force the connector. The connector has a positive locking tab that must be fully depressed.
  4. 4
    Disconnect ballast power connector
Trace the wiring harness from the ballast to locate the main power connector (usually a 3-pin or 4-pin connector). Press the locking tab and pull connector straight out from the ballast. This connector may be located near the ballast mounting point or further up the harness.
  5. 5
Locate and remove ballast mounting hardware
The ballast is typically mounted to a bracket behind the headlight assembly or on the inner fender. Using an 8mm socket, remove the mounting bolt(s) securing the ballast. Some models use a single bolt with a bracket, others use two bolts. Note the orientation of any spacers or grounding tabs.
    Torque spec
    Module Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
  6. 6
    Remove failed ballast
Once mounting hardware is removed, carefully extract the ballast from its mounting location. You may need to maneuver it around other components. Check for any additional wire routing clips that may still be holding the ballast harness in place and release them.
  7. 7
    Prepare new ballast for installation
Unpack the new ballast and verify it matches the old unit in connector configuration and mounting points. Apply a thin coat of dielectric grease to both the bulb-side high-voltage connector and the power connector terminals to ensure moisture protection and prevent corrosion.
  8. 8
Install new ballast to mounting bracket
Position the new ballast in the mounting location, ensuring any grounding tabs or spacers are properly aligned. Start the mounting bolt(s) by hand to ensure proper thread engagement. Using an 8mm socket and torque wrench, tighten mounting bolts to specification.
    Torque spec
    Module Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
  9. 9
    Reconnect ballast power connector
Align the main power connector with the ballast input and push firmly until you hear and feel a positive click. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is fully locked. Route the harness away from sharp edges and heat sources.
  10. 10
    Reconnect HID bulb connector
Connect the high-voltage output connector from the ballast to the HID bulb. Align the connector properly (it is keyed and will only fit one way) and push until the locking tab clicks into place. Verify the connection is secure with a gentle pull test.
  11. 11
    Reinstall headlight access cover
Position the rubber or plastic access cover over the rear of the headlight assembly. Press or twist clockwise to secure, ensuring a complete seal to prevent moisture intrusion into the headlight housing.
  12. 12
    Reconnect battery negative terminal
Clean the battery terminal and cable end with a wire brush if any corrosion is present. Reconnect the negative cable to the battery post and tighten the terminal bolt to specification using a 10mm socket and torque wrench. Do not overtighten as this can crack the terminal or strip threads.
    Torque spec
    Battery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked before testing
  2. Verify wire harnesses are routed away from moving parts, sharp edges, and hot engine components
  3. If air intake or battery was moved for access, reinstall to original position
  4. Double-check that headlight access cover is properly sealed to prevent moisture entry

Verification

  • Turn ignition to ON position without starting engine. Turn headlights on and verify both low and high beams function on the repaired side
  • Observe that the HID bulb ignites within 1-2 seconds and reaches full brightness within 10-15 seconds - this confirms proper ballast operation
  • Check for any flickering, color shifting, or delayed ignition which would indicate a faulty connection or incompatible ballast
  • Verify no warning lights appear on the instrument cluster related to the lighting system
  • With headlights on, gently wiggle connectors at the ballast to ensure no intermittent connection issues exist
  • Test both low beam and high beam functions multiple times to confirm consistent operation
  • Inspect the area around the ballast for any unusual odors or heat after 5 minutes of operation - a properly functioning ballast will be warm but not excessively hot
