Tune-Up - Major

Complete major tune-up service for the 2016-2021 Honda Civic 1.5L Turbo, including spark plugs, air filter, cabin filter, engine oil and filter change, and inspection of ignition coils and related engine maintenance components.

• Spark plugs (NGK or Denso iridium) × 4 — NGK DILKAR7G11GS or OEM equivalent
• Engine oil filter × 1 — Honda 15400-RTA-003 or equivalent
• Oil drain plug crush washer × 1 — Honda 94109-14000
• Engine air filter × 1 — Honda 17220-5AA-A00 or equivalent
• Cabin air filter × 1 — Honda 80292-TBA-A11 or equivalent

Fluids

• Honda Genuine 0W-20 Engine Oil — 4 qt

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
2. Ensure engine is completely cold (wait at least 2 hours after last operation)
3. Open hood and prop securely
4. Remove plastic engine cover by pulling upward on perimeter clips (no tools required)
5. Raise and secure front of vehicle on jack stands at rated lift points
6. Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels

Procedure

1. 1

   Drain engine oil
   Locate oil drain plug on passenger side of oil pan. Position drain pan beneath plug. Using 17mm wrench, loosen drain plug slowly. Once plug breaks free, quickly remove by hand while keeping upward pressure to prevent dropping. Allow oil to drain completely (approximately 10 minutes). Inspect drain plug threads and oil pan threads for damage.

   Replace oil drain plug and filter
   Clean drain plug and install NEW crush washer onto plug (do not reuse old washer). Thread drain plug by hand to avoid cross-threading, then torque to specification. Locate oil filter on front lower driver side of engine block. Use oil filter wrench to remove old filter (oil will spill, position drain pan accordingly). Clean filter mounting surface on engine block. Apply thin film of clean oil to new filter gasket. Install new filter hand-tight, then turn an additional 3/4 turn.
   Torque spec

   Oil Drain Plug35 Nm (26 lb-ft)

   Remove ignition coils
   Disconnect electrical connectors from all four ignition coils by pressing release tab and pulling straight up. Remove single 10mm bolt from each coil. Carefully pull coils straight up with slight twisting motion to break seal. Inspect coil boots for cracks, oil contamination, or carbon tracking. Set coils aside in order (cylinder 1 is nearest to timing belt end).
   ⚠Do not pull on ignition coil wires. Always grasp the connector body to prevent internal wire damage.
   Torque spec

   Sensor Bolts10 Nm (8 lb-ft)

   Remove and inspect spark plugs
   Use compressed air or vacuum to clean debris from around spark plug wells before removal. Using 14mm spark plug socket with extension, carefully loosen each spark plug 1-2 turns. Remove any remaining debris, then fully remove plugs. Inspect plug electrodes and insulators for excessive wear, oil fouling, or abnormal deposits. Check plug gap on new plugs (should be 0.028-0.031 inches, pre-gapped from factory, verify only).
   ℹ️Spark plug condition indicates engine health. Oil-fouled plugs may indicate valve cover gasket or piston ring issues requiring further diagnosis.

   Install new spark plugs
   Apply small amount of anti-seize compound to spark plug threads only (avoid electrode end). Thread each new spark plug by hand into cylinder head, ensuring plugs start smoothly without resistance. If resistance is felt, remove and restart to prevent cross-threading. Once seated finger-tight, torque plugs to 18 Nm (13 lb-ft) using torque wrench. Do not over-torque.
   ⚠Aluminum cylinder head threads strip easily. If plug does not thread smoothly by hand, stop immediately and inspect threads.

   Reinstall ignition coils
   Apply thin coat of dielectric grease to inside of each coil boot. Align coils over spark plugs and press firmly until fully seated (you should feel a positive click). Install and torque 10mm mounting bolts. Reconnect electrical connectors to each coil, ensuring they click into place.

   Replace engine air filter
   Locate air filter housing on driver side of engine bay. Release four spring clips securing housing cover (two on front, two on rear). Lift cover and set aside. Remove old air filter element and inspect housing for debris, moisture, or rodent damage. Clean housing interior with damp cloth if needed. Install new air filter ensuring directional arrow (if present) points toward engine. Reinstall cover and secure all four clips.

   Replace cabin air filter
   Open glove box and remove contents. Press inward on both sides of glove box to release stops and lower fully. Locate cabin filter cover on right side of HVAC housing. Press tabs and remove cover. Slide old cabin filter out (note orientation and airflow direction arrow). Vacuum any debris from filter housing. Install new cabin filter matching airflow direction arrow. Reinstall cover and restore glove box stops.

   Refill engine oil
   Lower vehicle from jack stands. Locate oil filler cap on top of valve cover. Remove cap and insert funnel. Pour in 3.5 quarts of Honda Genuine 0W-20 oil initially. Wait 2 minutes for oil to settle. Check dipstick level (wiper blade on passenger side of engine). Add remaining oil in small increments until level reaches upper mark on dipstick. Install oil filler cap securely.

    Start engine and check for leaks
    Start engine and allow to idle. Monitor oil pressure warning light (should extinguish within 2-3 seconds). Inspect oil filter and drain plug areas for leaks. Allow engine to reach operating temperature (fan cycles on). Turn off engine and wait 5 minutes. Recheck oil level on dipstick and top off if needed. Reset maintenance reminder using display settings (press and hold SEL/RESET button on instrument cluster).
    ⚠If oil pressure light remains illuminated after 5 seconds, immediately shut off engine and investigate. Do not run engine without oil pressure.

Reassembly

1. Reinstall plastic engine cover by aligning clips and pressing firmly until seated
2. Verify all electrical connectors are fully engaged and locked
3. Ensure no tools or rags remain in engine compartment
4. Record mileage and date of service for maintenance records

Verification

• Oil level is at upper mark on dipstick when checked on level ground with cold engine
• No oil leaks visible under vehicle after test drive
• Engine idles smoothly without misfires or rough running
• Check engine light remains off after drive cycle
• Oil pressure warning light extinguishes within 2-3 seconds of starting
• All protective covers and housings are properly secured
• Maintenance reminder has been reset to 100%
