This procedure covers removal and replacement of the windshield washer pump on a 2016-2021 Honda Civic 1.5L Turbo, requiring access to the washer fluid reservoir in the engine bay.
Warnings
⚠Washer fluid will spill when disconnecting lines and removing pump. Work in a well-ventilated area and protect eyes from splashes.
ℹ️Some washer fluid will remain in the reservoir and lines. Have towels and drain pan ready to catch spillage.

Parts
- Windshield washer pump × 1 — Use OEM Honda part or equivalent
- Washer pump grommet (if damaged) × 1 — Usually comes with pump assembly
Fluids
- Windshield Washer Fluid — 3.5 qt
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and turn off ignition
- Open hood and secure with prop rod
- Place drain pan and towels under left front area of engine bay near washer reservoir
- Disconnect negative battery terminal to prevent accidental washer activation during service
Procedure
- 1Disconnect battery negative terminalUsing a 10mm socket, loosen the negative battery terminal bolt and disconnect the cable. Move the cable away from the battery post to prevent accidental contact.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 2Locate washer fluid reservoirThe washer fluid reservoir is located on the driver's side (left side) of the engine bay, near the front fender. It is a translucent white plastic tank with a blue cap.
- 3Drain or remove excess washer fluidRemove the reservoir cap and use a fluid extraction pump or turkey baster to remove as much washer fluid as possible into a clean container for reuse. This minimizes spillage during pump removal. Alternatively, proceed with pump removal and allow fluid to drain into your drain pan.
- 4Access the washer pumpThe washer pump is mounted in a grommet at the bottom of the reservoir. You may need to reach down from above or access from below through the wheel well area. Position your drain pan directly under the pump location.
- 5Disconnect electrical connectorLocate the electrical connector on the washer pump. Press the locking tab and pull the connector straight off the pump terminals. The connector may have a sliding lock or tab that must be released first.
- 6Disconnect washer hoseUse needle nose pliers to compress the hose clamp on the outlet hose (if equipped with spring clamp) and slide it back away from the pump fitting. Pull the hose straight off the pump outlet. Allow fluid to drain into your pan.
- 7Remove washer pump from reservoirFirmly grasp the pump body and pull it straight out of the rubber grommet in the reservoir. It may require twisting and pulling motion to break it free. The pump is a press-fit into the grommet and does not use fasteners. Be careful not to tear the grommet if it will be reused.⚠Remaining washer fluid will drain from the reservoir opening when pump is removed. Keep drain pan positioned to catch spillage.
- 8Inspect grommet sealExamine the rubber grommet in the reservoir for cracks, tears, or deterioration. If damaged, remove the old grommet and clean the reservoir opening. The grommet provides the seal and retention for the pump.
- 9Install new washer pumpIf grommet was replaced, install it into the reservoir opening first. Lubricate the pump body with a small amount of washer fluid or soapy water. Press the new pump firmly into the grommet using a straight pushing and twisting motion until it seats completely and sits flush.
- 10Reconnect washer hosePush the washer hose firmly onto the pump outlet until it bottoms against the fitting shoulder. Slide the hose clamp back into position over the connection point to secure it.
- 11Reconnect electrical connectorPush the electrical connector onto the pump terminals until it clicks into place. Ensure the locking tab is fully engaged. Tug gently to verify secure connection.
- 12Refill washer fluid reservoirPour windshield washer fluid into the reservoir through the filler neck. Fill to the full mark on the reservoir (approximately 3.5 quarts total capacity). Replace the reservoir cap securely.
- 13Reconnect batteryReconnect the negative battery terminal and tighten the terminal bolt to specification. Ensure good contact between cable and post.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Ensure all electrical connections are fully seated and locked
- Verify washer hose is securely attached to pump outlet with clamp in place
- Confirm reservoir cap is tightened to prevent fluid evaporation
- Clean up any spilled washer fluid from engine bay components
Verification
- Turn ignition to ON position without starting engine
- Activate windshield washer function and verify fluid sprays properly from both nozzles
- Listen for smooth pump operation without unusual noise or grinding
- Check for leaks around pump grommet seal and hose connection while pump is running
- Verify pump shuts off properly when washer control is released
- Check reservoir fluid level and top off if needed after testing
