This procedure covers removal and replacement of the water pump on the 2016-2021 Honda Civic 1.5L turbo engine, requiring partial timing cover removal and coolant system service.
Warnings
⚠️Allow engine to cool completely before starting. Hot coolant under pressure can cause severe burns.
⚠The water pump is driven by the timing belt. Improper timing belt alignment can cause catastrophic engine damage.
⚠Do not rotate the crankshaft or camshaft independently once timing belt tension is released.
ℹ️Honda Type 2 coolant (blue) must be used. Do not substitute with generic coolant or Type 1 (green).

Parts
- Water pump assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Water pump gasket/O-ring × 1 — Usually included with pump
- Timing cover gasket × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Thermostat housing gasket × 1 — Use OEM specification
Fluids
- Honda Type 2 Coolant (Blue) — 6 qt
Preparation
- Ensure engine is completely cold to the touch
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and isolate cable
- Raise vehicle and secure on jack stands at all four corners
- Remove engine splash shield and right front wheel for access
- Place drain pan under radiator drain plug and drain coolant completely
- Remove serpentine drive belt using 14mm wrench on tensioner
- Remove upper engine cover by pulling upward on clips
Procedure
- 1Remove valve cover and timing cover componentsRemove ignition coils and spark plugs for access. Remove valve cover bolts and carefully lift valve cover away. Remove upper timing cover bolts and set timing cover aside. This exposes the timing belt and water pump mounting area.
- 2Position engine at Top Dead Center (TDC)Rotate crankshaft clockwise using 19mm socket on crankshaft pulley bolt until timing marks on camshaft sprocket align with marks on cylinder head. Verify TDC mark on crankshaft pulley aligns with pointer on lower timing cover. Lock camshaft sprocket with holding tool to prevent rotation.⚠Only rotate engine in clockwise direction (from front). Counter-clockwise rotation can damage timing components.
- 3Remove timing belt tensioner and beltLoosen timing belt tensioner bolt and pivot tensioner away from belt. Remove timing belt from camshaft sprocket and crankshaft sprocket. Keep belt clean and do not kink or twist if reusing. Mark belt direction of rotation if planning to reuse.ℹ️If timing belt shows any signs of cracking, oil contamination, or wear, replace it during this service.
- 4Remove timing cover section near water pumpRemove remaining timing cover bolts that obstruct water pump access. Carefully separate timing cover from engine block. Some sections may remain in place. Clean gasket surfaces on timing cover using plastic scraper.
- 5Disconnect coolant hoses from water pumpLoosen hose clamps on coolant hoses connected to water pump housing using 7mm socket or flat screwdriver. Carefully twist and pull hoses off water pump nipples. Some residual coolant will drain from hoses.Torque specHose Clamps3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
- 6Remove water pump mounting boltsRemove all water pump mounting bolts using 10mm socket. Note bolt locations as some may be different lengths. Carefully pry water pump away from engine block using plastic pry tool. Remove old gasket or O-ring from mounting surface.Torque specWater Pump Bolts25 Nm (18 lb-ft)
- 7Clean mounting surfacesThoroughly clean water pump mounting surface on engine block using plastic scraper. Remove all old gasket material and debris. Wipe surface clean with lint-free cloth. Inspect surface for gouges or damage that could cause leaks.
- 8Install new water pumpInstall new gasket or O-ring on water pump. Apply thin coat of coolant to gasket for easier installation. Position water pump on engine block and align bolt holes. Hand-thread all water pump bolts before tightening any. Tighten bolts in criss-cross pattern to specified torque.⚠Use criss-cross tightening pattern to ensure even gasket compression and prevent leaks.Torque specWater Pump Bolts25 Nm (18 lb-ft)
- 9Reconnect coolant hosesSlide coolant hoses onto water pump nipples, ensuring hoses are fully seated past raised bead. Position hose clamps over hose ends and tighten to specified torque. Verify hoses are secure and properly positioned.Torque specHose Clamps3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
- 10Reinstall timing cover sectionsInstall new timing cover gasket if removed. Position timing cover back onto engine block, aligning all bolt holes. Install timing cover bolts and tighten to specified torque in a criss-cross pattern.
- 11Reinstall timing beltVerify camshaft and crankshaft are still at TDC marks. Install timing belt onto crankshaft sprocket first, then around camshaft sprocket, maintaining tension on non-tensioner side. Ensure belt teeth fully engage sprocket grooves with no slack on tension side.
- 12Tension timing belt and verify timingRotate timing belt tensioner back into position against belt. Tighten tensioner bolt to lock position. Remove camshaft holding tool. Manually rotate crankshaft two complete revolutions clockwise and verify timing marks realign at TDC. Marks must align precisely.⚠️If timing marks do not align after two rotations, timing is incorrect. Do not start engine. Remove belt and repeat alignment procedure.
- 13Reinstall valve cover and upper componentsInstall new valve cover gasket if needed. Position valve cover on cylinder head and install bolts in sequence from center outward. Install spark plugs and ignition coils. Reinstall upper timing cover and engine cover.
- 14Refill cooling systemClose radiator drain plug. Fill cooling system with Honda Type 2 coolant through radiator cap opening or coolant reservoir to MAX line. Use coolant funnel adapter to prevent air pockets. Squeeze upper radiator hose while filling to help purge air.
Reassembly
- Reinstall serpentine drive belt by rotating tensioner and slipping belt over pulleys
- Reinstall engine splash shield and right front wheel, torque lug nuts to specification
- Reconnect negative battery terminal
- Lower vehicle from jack stands
Verification
- Start engine and allow to idle. Monitor temperature gauge for normal operation
- Check for coolant leaks around water pump, hoses, and timing cover while engine warms up
- Run engine until cooling fans cycle on to verify thermostat operation
- Allow engine to cool, then recheck coolant level and top off to MAX line if needed
- Test drive vehicle and verify no overheating or cooling system warnings
- Recheck for leaks after test drive and verify coolant level remains stable
