Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
  3. Allow engine to cool to safe working temperature (at least 30 minutes)
  4. Gather all required tools, parts, and fluids
  5. Verify you have the correct oil filter and air filters for your specific model year

Procedure

  1. 1
    Raise and secure vehicle
Loosen all wheel lug nuts one turn while vehicle is on ground. Raise front of vehicle with floor jack at designated front jacking point. Install jack stands under frame rails. Lower vehicle onto jack stands. Raise rear of vehicle and install jack stands under rear frame rails. Remove all four wheels for full undercarriage inspection access.
  2. 2
    Drain engine oil
Locate oil drain plug on bottom of oil pan. Position drain pan beneath drain plug. Using appropriate socket, loosen and remove oil drain plug. Allow oil to fully drain (approximately 5-10 minutes). Inspect drain plug threads and sealing surface for damage. Remove old crush washer from drain plug and install new crush washer.
Hot oil can cause severe burns. Ensure engine has cooled adequately.
  3. 3
    Replace oil filter
Locate oil filter on driver side of engine block. Position drain pan beneath filter. Using oil filter wrench, rotate filter counterclockwise to remove. Allow residual oil to drain. Clean filter mounting surface on engine block with clean rag. Apply thin film of fresh oil to rubber gasket of new filter. Install new filter hand-tight, then tighten an additional 3/4 turn.
  4. 4
Install drain plug and refill engine oil
Install oil drain plug with new crush washer. Torque drain plug to specification. Lower vehicle slightly if needed to access oil fill cap. Remove oil fill cap on top of engine. Using funnel, add 4.5 quarts of Hyundai Genuine 0W-20 engine oil. Wait 2 minutes for oil to settle, then check level with dipstick. Add remaining oil as needed to reach full mark between MIN and MAX on dipstick. Install oil fill cap.
  5. 5
    Replace engine air filter
Open hood and locate air filter housing on passenger side of engine bay. Release air box clips (typically 4 clips). Lift air box cover and remove old engine air filter. Inspect air box housing for debris and clean if necessary. Install new air filter ensuring proper seating in housing. Replace air box cover and secure all clips.
  6. 6
    Replace cabin air filter
Open glove box and remove contents. Press inward on both sides of glove box to release stops and lower fully. Locate cabin air filter cover behind glove box. Press tabs on cover and remove. Slide out old cabin air filter, noting airflow direction arrows. Clean filter housing with damp cloth if dusty. Install new cabin air filter with airflow arrows pointing in correct direction. Reinstall cover and glove box stops.
  7. 7
    Inspect fluids and components
Check coolant level in overflow reservoir (should be between MIN and MAX when cold). Inspect brake fluid level in master cylinder reservoir. Check windshield washer fluid and top off if needed. Inspect power steering system (electric, no fluid required). Visually inspect belts for cracks or wear. Check battery terminals for corrosion and ensure secure connections.
  8. 8
    Inspect AWD system and undercarriage
While vehicle is raised, visually inspect front differential, rear differential, and transfer case for leaks. Check CV axle boots for tears or grease leakage. Inspect exhaust system for damage or excessive corrosion. Check brake pads and rotors for wear through wheel openings. Inspect suspension components for damage or excessive wear. Look for fluid leaks from engine, transmission, and cooling system.
  9. 9
    Check tire condition and pressure
Inspect all four tires for uneven wear, damage, or objects embedded in tread. Measure tread depth (minimum 2/32 inch). Check tire pressure with gauge when tires are cold and adjust to specification on driver door jamb sticker (typically 35 PSI front and rear). Inspect spare tire condition and pressure.
  10. 10
    Reinstall wheels and lower vehicle
Clean wheel mounting surfaces and brake rotor hubs of any rust or debris. Install wheels onto hubs, ensuring proper seating. Install lug nuts and tighten in star pattern by hand. Raise vehicle slightly to remove jack stands. Lower vehicle to ground. Torque all lug nuts in star pattern to specification.
  11. 11
    Start engine and verify operation
Start engine and allow to idle. Monitor for oil pressure light (should extinguish within 2-3 seconds). Check for oil leaks around drain plug and filter. Allow engine to reach operating temperature. Verify no warning lights on instrument cluster. Check engine oil level again after engine reaches temperature and add if necessary.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure oil fill cap is properly installed and secured
  2. Verify air filter housing cover is fully latched
  3. Confirm glove box is properly reinstalled and operating normally
  4. Double-check that all lug nuts are torqued to specification in star pattern

Verification

  • Start engine and verify oil pressure light extinguishes promptly
  • Check for oil leaks under vehicle after running engine for 5 minutes
  • Verify engine oil level is correct on dipstick after reaching operating temperature
  • Confirm no warning lights are illuminated on instrument cluster
  • Test drive vehicle and verify normal operation, no unusual noises or vibrations
  • Recheck lug nut torque after test drive
  • Reset maintenance reminder in instrument cluster if equipped
