This procedure covers removal and replacement of the airbag control module (ACM/SRS computer), typically located under the center console. This is a safety-critical component requiring professional programming and calibration after installation.
Warnings
⚠️CRITICAL SAFETY SYSTEM: Improper installation or programming of the airbag module can result in airbags not deploying during a crash or deploying unexpectedly, causing severe injury or death. If you are not absolutely certain of your abilities, seek professional service.
⚠️Wait a MINIMUM of 3 minutes after disconnecting the battery before beginning work. The airbag system capacitors must fully discharge to prevent accidental deployment.
⚠️Never work on airbag systems with the ignition on or battery connected. Accidental deployment can cause severe injury.
⚠The replacement module MUST be programmed to your vehicle's VIN and calibrated using a factory-level scan tool. Failure to program will result in non-functional airbags and persistent warning lights.
⚠Do not drop, impact, or expose the airbag module to moisture. Handle by the casing only.
ℹ️This procedure assumes no airbags have deployed. If airbags have deployed, additional components (airbags, seatbelts, sensors) must be replaced.

Parts
- Airbag control module/SRS computer × 1 — Use OEM specification - must be programmed to VIN
- Plastic trim clips (if damaged) × 1 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level ground and ensure transmission is in Park with parking brake engaged
- Turn ignition OFF and remove key from vehicle
- Open driver's door and leave it open throughout the procedure
- Disconnect negative battery terminal first, then positive terminal
- Wait a MINIMUM of 3 minutes for airbag system capacitors to discharge - set a timer to be certain
- Ensure you have factory repair information and wiring diagrams for your specific model year
- Document all connector positions with photos before disconnection
Procedure
- 1Remove center console front sectionUsing trim removal tools, carefully pry up the shift boot surround trim starting from the rear edge. Remove the two Phillips screws securing the front console section. Lift console trim upward and disconnect any electrical connectors for power outlets, heated seat switches, or USB ports. Set trim aside safely.
- 2Remove center console rear sectionRemove the cupholders by pressing the release tabs or pulling firmly upward. Remove the two screws located in the cupholder cavity. Pull the parking brake lever to its highest position. Carefully lift the rear console section upward and rearward, disconnecting any electrical connectors. Remove the entire rear console section.
- 3Locate airbag control moduleThe airbag control module is typically mounted to the floor tunnel under the center console, between the front seats. It is a rectangular metal box (approximately 4x6 inches) with a yellow connector and multiple wiring harnesses attached. Verify you have located the correct module - it will have SRS or airbag markings and a yellow connector.⚠Ensure 3 minutes have elapsed since battery disconnect before touching any connectors or the module itself.
- 4Disconnect airbag module connectorLocate the primary yellow SRS connector on the module. Press the connector locking tab (usually red or orange) and carefully pull the connector straight out from the module. Do NOT pull on wires. If there is a secondary connector, disconnect it using the same method. Note the exact orientation of connectors for reinstallation.⚠SRS connectors use special locking mechanisms. Do not force - locate and press the release tab fully before pulling.
- 5Disconnect ground connectionLocate the ground wire connection on the module (usually a black wire with ring terminal). Remove the ground bolt completely and disconnect the ground wire. Keep the bolt and any washers together.Torque specGround Bolt14 Nm (10 lb-ft)
- 6Remove module mounting boltsRemove the module mounting bolts (typically 2-4 bolts) securing the module to the floor bracket. Support the module with one hand while removing the final bolt to prevent it from falling. Carefully withdraw the module from the vehicle, ensuring no wires are snagged.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 7Inspect mounting bracket and connectorsInspect the mounting bracket for damage, corrosion, or cracks. Inspect all connector pins in the vehicle-side harness for corrosion, damage, or bent pins. Check connector seals for damage. Clean mounting surfaces with a clean, dry cloth. Any corrosion or damage must be repaired before installing the new module.⚠Connector pin damage or corrosion can cause airbag malfunction. Repair or replace damaged connectors before proceeding.
- 8Install new airbag moduleRemove the new module from its protective packaging only when ready to install. Position the new module in the mounting bracket, aligning the mounting holes. Install the module mounting bolts finger-tight first, then torque to specification in a cross-pattern to ensure even seating.⚠Handle new module carefully - do not drop or impact. Keep away from moisture and static electricity.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 9Reconnect ground connectionEnsure the ground mounting surface is clean and free of paint or corrosion at the contact point. Position the ground wire ring terminal over the ground stud and install the ground bolt with any washers in their original configuration. Torque to specification.⚠Ground connection is critical for proper SRS operation. Ensure metal-to-metal contact with no paint or corrosion interference.Torque specGround Bolt14 Nm (10 lb-ft)
- 10Reconnect airbag module connectorsAlign the primary yellow SRS connector with the module connector, ensuring correct orientation. Push firmly until you hear and feel a distinct click, indicating the locking tab has engaged. Verify the connector is fully seated and locked. Repeat for any secondary connectors. Gently tug on each connector to verify it is locked.⚠️Partially connected SRS connectors can cause system malfunction. Verify each connector clicks and locks positively.
- 11Reinstall center consoleReinstall the rear console section, reconnecting all electrical connectors for power outlets, USB ports, and switches. Secure with screws. Reinstall the front console section and shift boot surround, ensuring all clips engage properly. Verify all switches and features operate correctly before proceeding.
- 12Reconnect batteryReconnect the positive battery terminal first, then the negative terminal. Torque battery terminal bolts to specification. Do not overtighten as this can damage the battery posts.⚠Connect positive terminal FIRST when reconnecting, opposite of disconnection order.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 13Program and calibrate airbag moduleUsing a factory-level scan tool with SRS programming capability, enter the vehicle VIN into the new airbag module. Follow all manufacturer programming procedures exactly. Perform SRS system calibration and configuration. Clear all diagnostic trouble codes. Verify no codes return after cycling ignition off and on three times.⚠️PROGRAMMING IS MANDATORY: An unprogrammed or incorrectly programmed module will NOT deploy airbags in a crash. This step cannot be skipped.
Reassembly
- Verify all console sections are properly secured and all electrical functions work
- Ensure no trim pieces are loose or rattling
- Verify all connectors clicked and locked properly during installation
- Double-check that ground connection is tight and has metal-to-metal contact
Verification
- Turn ignition to ON position (do not start engine). The airbag warning light should illuminate for 6 seconds, then turn OFF. This indicates the system has passed self-diagnostics
- If the airbag light stays ON, flashes, or does not illuminate at all, there is a system fault. Scan for codes immediately and do NOT drive the vehicle
- Using a scan tool, verify no active or pending SRS diagnostic trouble codes are present
- Verify the module is programmed with the correct VIN by checking scan tool data
- Perform a test drive and verify the airbag warning light remains OFF during all driving conditions
- After 24 hours of driving, re-scan for codes to ensure no intermittent faults are present
- Document the module replacement, programming date, and VIN in vehicle service records
