This procedure covers the replacement of a blend door actuator in the HVAC system, which controls air temperature distribution in the cabin.
Warnings
⚠Disconnecting the battery will reset radio presets and seat memory positions
ℹ️The blend door actuator location varies by symptom - driver side temp issues indicate driver side actuator, passenger side indicates passenger actuator
⚠Do not force the actuator arm when installing - it must align with the blend door shaft naturally

Parts
- Blend door actuator × 1 — Use OEM specification for specific location
- Plastic trim clips (assorted) × 1 — 10 piece assortment recommended
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level ground and allow HVAC system to cool completely
- Turn ignition off and remove key from vehicle
- Disconnect negative battery cable and wait 3 minutes for airbag system to discharge
- Set driver seat to rearmost position for access
- Have replacement trim clips ready as original clips may break during removal
Procedure
- 1Remove lower dash panelLocate and remove the lower dash panel on the side corresponding to the faulty actuator. Use trim removal tools to carefully pry out the panel starting from the bottom edge. Remove 3 Phillips screws securing the panel once clips are released. Disconnect any electrical connectors for courtesy lights if equipped.
- 2Remove side panel coverRemove the side panel cover adjacent to the center console. Pull back the weather stripping at the door opening to access hidden clips. Use trim tools to release 4 clips along the vertical edge. Carefully pull panel away from dash structure.
- 3Access HVAC housingWith panels removed, locate the HVAC housing behind the dash. Use a flashlight to identify the blend door actuator - it will be a small rectangular motor with a gear visible on one side, mounted to the side of the HVAC case. Note the actuator position and any wiring routing before removal.
- 4Disconnect actuator electrical connectorPress the locking tab on the actuator electrical connector and pull straight back to disconnect. Do not pull on the wires. If connector is difficult to reach, use a flathead screwdriver to gently depress the locking tab while pulling the connector.
- 5Remove actuator mounting screwsUsing a 7mm socket with extension, remove the 3 screws securing the blend door actuator to the HVAC housing. Keep screws organized as they are specific to this application. Support the actuator while removing the final screw to prevent it from falling into the dash cavity.⚠Dropping screws into the dash may require extensive disassembly to retrieve - use magnetic toolsTorque specActuator Screws3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
- 6Remove old actuatorGently pull the actuator straight away from the HVAC housing. The actuator gear will disengage from the blend door shaft. If resistance is felt, the actuator may be in mid-cycle - manually rotate the visible gear slightly while pulling to release. Inspect the blend door shaft for damage or debris.
- 7Prepare new actuatorRemove the new actuator from packaging. Do not manually force the actuator gear position. Verify the actuator part number matches the original. Check that the mounting holes align with the original actuator before installation.
- 8Install new actuatorAlign the new actuator gear with the blend door shaft on the HVAC housing. The actuator will only install in one orientation. Push the actuator gently onto the housing while rotating the gear slightly to ensure proper engagement with the blend door shaft. The actuator should seat flush against the housing without force.
- 9Install actuator mounting screwsInstall all 3 mounting screws finger-tight first to ensure proper alignment. Using a torque wrench with 7mm socket, torque screws to specification in a crossing pattern to ensure even seating. Do not overtighten as the housing is plastic.⚠Overtightening will strip the plastic HVAC housing threads - use proper torque wrenchTorque specActuator Screws3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
- 10Reconnect electrical connectorConnect the electrical connector to the new actuator, ensuring it clicks fully into place. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is locked. Route wiring as noted during disassembly to prevent pinching during panel reinstallation.
- 11Test actuator operationBefore reinstalling panels, reconnect the negative battery cable. Turn ignition to ON position without starting engine. Operate the climate control system through full temperature range from cold to hot several times. Listen for smooth actuator operation without clicking or binding. Verify air temperature changes at the vents correspond to temperature setting.
- 12Reinstall side panel coverPosition the side panel cover and align all clip locations. Press firmly along clip points until each clip is fully seated with an audible click. Reinstall weather stripping at door opening, ensuring it is fully seated in its channel.
- 13Reinstall lower dash panelReconnect any electrical connectors for courtesy lights. Position the lower dash panel and install the 3 Phillips screws. Press panel firmly to engage all retaining clips. Verify panel gaps are even and consistent with opposite side.
Reassembly
- Verify all trim panels are fully seated and clips are engaged
- Check that no gaps or misalignment exists in dash panels
- Return driver seat to normal position
- Reset radio presets and clock as needed
Verification
- Start engine and let HVAC system run for 5 minutes
- Test temperature control from coldest to hottest settings with engine at operating temperature
- Verify smooth actuator operation with no clicking, grinding, or hesitation
- Confirm air temperature at vents matches temperature setting on both driver and passenger sides
- Check that mode changes (defrost, vent, floor) still function correctly
- Verify no air leaks or unusual noises from dash area during HVAC operation
