Replace the brake light switch located on the brake pedal assembly to restore brake light function and ensure proper operation of cruise control, shift interlock, and other brake-dependent safety systems.
Warnings
⚠️SAFETY-CRITICAL SYSTEM: The brake light switch controls brake lights, cruise control disengagement, shift interlock, and start/stop system functionality. Improper installation can result in inability to shift out of Park, failure of brake lights to illuminate, or cruise control malfunction leading to collision risk.
⚠️DO NOT drive the vehicle until you have verified all brake lights illuminate when pedal is pressed and turn off completely when pedal is released. Failure of brake lights is a major safety hazard and illegal.
⚠Disconnect the negative battery terminal and wait at least 3 minutes before working near the brake pedal area to prevent airbag deployment if you accidentally contact steering column components.
⚠The brake pedal switch mounting bracket is plastic and can break if excessive force is applied. Work carefully to avoid damaging mounting points.
ℹ️This procedure requires working in a cramped position under the dashboard. Allow adequate time and use proper lighting.
Tools required
Flashlight or work lightEssential
10mm socket or wrench

Parts
- Brake light switch × 1 — 93810-D3000 or equivalent OEM
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and apply parking brake
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait at least 3 minutes to allow airbag system to discharge
- Adjust driver's seat fully rearward to provide maximum working space under dashboard
- If equipped, remove lower dash panel/knee bolster for improved access (typically secured by plastic clips and screws)
- Position work light to illuminate brake pedal assembly area from below/side
- Take photos of switch position and wiring before removal for reference during installation
Procedure
- 1Locate the brake light switchPosition yourself under the dashboard on the driver's side. The brake light switch is mounted on a bracket at the top of the brake pedal arm, near where the pedal pivots. It is a cylindrical plastic component with a single electrical connector and appears to press against a tab on the pedal arm. Use your flashlight to clearly identify the switch and its orientation.
- 2Disconnect the electrical connectorLocate the electrical connector on the brake light switch body. Press the locking tab on the connector (typically on the side or top) while gently pulling the connector straight away from the switch. Do not pull on the wires themselves. If the connector is difficult to access, you may need to remove it after the switch is loosened from its mounting position.
- 3Remove the brake light switch from mounting bracketThe switch is typically held in place by a quarter-turn locking mechanism or friction-fit clips. Rotate the switch body counterclockwise approximately 30-45 degrees while gently pulling outward. Some models use a push-button release on the side of the switch housing that must be depressed while pulling. If rotation is required, note the stop positions to avoid forcing the mechanism. The switch should release from the bracket with moderate hand pressure.
- 4Inspect the mounting bracket and pedal contact pointExamine the plastic mounting bracket for cracks or damage. Check the brake pedal arm contact tab where the switch plunger rests for wear, cracks, or deformation. If the tab is damaged, the switch will not function properly and the pedal assembly may require service. Clean any dirt or debris from the mounting area with a dry cloth.
- 5Prepare the new brake light switchRemove the new switch from packaging and verify it matches the old switch in design and connector type. Some switches come with the plunger extended and locked in the installation position. If present, do NOT depress the plunger or remove any installation clips yet - these will automatically adjust when the brake pedal is first pressed after installation.
- 6Install the new brake light switchPosition the new switch into the mounting bracket with the plunger facing the brake pedal arm contact tab. Align the locking tabs or rotation slots with the bracket openings. Push the switch firmly into the bracket while rotating clockwise (if applicable) until it locks into place with an audible click. The switch should be secure and not rotate freely. Ensure the plunger is in contact with or very close to the pedal arm tab.
- 7Connect the electrical connectorAlign the electrical connector with the switch terminal and push firmly until the locking tab clicks into place. Gently tug on the connector body (not wires) to verify it is securely latched. Ensure the wiring is not pinched, kinked, or positioned where it could contact moving pedal components.
- 8Adjust switch position if applicableSome brake light switches require adjustment to set the correct activation point. If your switch has an adjustment feature (threaded body or sliding clips), adjust so the brake lights activate when the pedal moves 5-10mm from its rest position. Most modern switches are self-adjusting and will calibrate on first pedal press - if yours has a plastic shipping clip or pin, leave it in place for now.
- 9Reinstall lower dash panel and reconnect batteryIf you removed the lower dash panel or knee bolster, reinstall it by aligning clips and installing any screws removed during disassembly. Reconnect the negative battery terminal. Some vehicles may require windows to be re-initialized or other systems reset after battery reconnection - consult owner's manual if needed.
Reassembly
- Ensure all dashboard panels are securely fastened and clips fully seated
- Verify no tools or parts were left in the pedal area that could interfere with pedal operation
- Return driver's seat to normal operating position
- If switch had a shipping clip or pin, it will release automatically on first brake pedal application
Verification
- With ignition ON (engine off), have an assistant observe the rear brake lights while you press the brake pedal - all brake lights should illuminate immediately when pedal is pressed even slightly (within 5-10mm of travel)
- Release the brake pedal completely and verify all brake lights turn OFF with no delay or flickering
- Test cruise control cancel function: If equipped, engage cruise control at low speed in a safe area, then tap brake pedal - cruise should disengage immediately
- Verify shift interlock operation: With engine running and foot OFF brake, attempt to shift out of Park - transmission should NOT shift. Press brake pedal and verify transmission now shifts freely out of Park
- Check that brake lights turn off completely when pedal is fully released - lights staying on will drain battery and confuse following drivers
- Test start/stop system if equipped - engine should stop at complete stops with brake applied and restart when brake is released
- If any function does not work properly, DO NOT drive the vehicle - recheck switch installation, connector seating, and pedal bracket condition. Seek professional assistance if problems persist
