This procedure covers replacement of the EVAP canister vent valve, which controls purge vapor flow from the charcoal canister to atmosphere during emissions system operation.
Warnings
⚠Perform this work in a well-ventilated area as fuel vapors may be present in EVAP system components
ℹ️The EVAP vent valve is located at the rear of the vehicle near the fuel tank and charcoal canister
⚠Do not force electrical connectors as the locking tabs are fragile and break easily

Parts
- EVAP canister vent valve × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Rubber mounting grommet (if damaged) × 1 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Turn ignition off and remove key from vehicle
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 3 minutes to allow system capacitors to discharge
- Allow exhaust system to cool completely if vehicle was recently driven
Procedure
- 1Access rear undercarriageSafely raise and support the rear of the vehicle using jack stands rated for the vehicle weight. Position stands on the designated rear jacking points on the frame rails. Remove the rear wheels if additional access is needed for your specific work environment.
- 2Locate EVAP vent valve assemblyThe EVAP canister vent valve is mounted on or near the charcoal canister assembly, located forward of the fuel tank on the driver's side. The canister is typically mounted to a bracket on the frame rail. Use a flashlight to identify the vent valve, which will have an electrical connector and one or two vapor hoses attached.
- 3Remove protective covers if presentSome models have a plastic shield or cover protecting the EVAP canister assembly. If present, remove the cover screws using a 10mm socket. Keep hardware organized for reinstallation.Torque specCover Screws11 Nm (8 lb-ft)
- 4Disconnect electrical connectorPress the locking tab on the vent valve electrical connector and pull straight away from the valve. Do not twist or pull on the wiring harness itself. If the connector is corroded or stuck, spray with penetrating oil and allow to soak for 5 minutes before attempting removal.
- 5Disconnect vapor hosesThe vent valve has vapor hoses connected with either quick-disconnect fittings or hose clamps. For quick-disconnect fittings, press the release tabs and pull the hose straight off. For hose clamps, use a flathead screwdriver or socket to loosen the clamp, then twist and pull the hose off the nipple. Note the orientation and routing of hoses for reinstallation.
- 6Remove vent valve mounting hardwareThe vent valve is typically secured to the canister or mounting bracket with one or two 10mm bolts or integrated into a bracket. Remove the mounting bolts completely and carefully extract the vent valve from its position. If the valve uses a rubber grommet mount, twist and pull firmly to extract it.Torque specMounting Bolts27 Nm (20 lb-ft)
- 7Inspect mounting location and componentsExamine the mounting bracket, rubber grommet (if equipped), and vapor hose ends for cracks, deterioration, or damage. Check hose clamps for corrosion. Replace any damaged components. Clean the mounting area of any dirt or debris with shop towels.
- 8Install new EVAP vent valvePosition the new vent valve in the mounting location, ensuring proper orientation. The electrical connector should face the same direction as the original valve. If using a grommet mount, press firmly until the valve seats completely. Install mounting bolts finger-tight, then torque to specification using a torque wrench.Torque specMounting Bolts27 Nm (20 lb-ft)
- 9Reconnect vapor hosesAttach vapor hoses to the vent valve in the same configuration as removal. For quick-disconnect fittings, push firmly until you hear or feel a click indicating the fitting is locked. For hose clamps, slide the hose fully onto the nipple, position the clamp over the hose end, and tighten to specification. Ensure hoses are not kinked or stretched.Torque specHose Clamps3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
- 10Reconnect electrical connectorAlign the electrical connector with the vent valve terminals and push firmly until the locking tab clicks into place. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is fully seated and locked.
- 11Reinstall protective coversIf a protective cover or shield was removed, reinstall it in the reverse order of removal. Install all screws finger-tight, then torque to specification in a cross-pattern to ensure even seating.Torque specCover Screws11 Nm (8 lb-ft)
- 12Lower vehicle and reconnect batteryRemove jack stands and carefully lower the vehicle to the ground. Reinstall rear wheels if removed and torque lug nuts to factory specification. Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
Reassembly
- Verify all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
- Confirm all vapor hoses are properly routed and secured without kinks
- Double-check that all mounting hardware is torqued to specification
- Ensure no tools or parts were left in the work area
Verification
- Start the engine and allow it to idle for 2 minutes, listening for unusual vacuum leaks or hissing sounds from the EVAP system area
- Use an OBD-II scanner to check for any EVAP-related diagnostic trouble codes (P0440, P0441, P0455, P0456, P0457, etc.)
- Perform an EVAP system leak test using the scanner's bi-directional controls if available, commanding the vent valve to open and close while monitoring system response
- If no codes are present and the valve operates correctly during testing, clear any previous codes and perform a short test drive
- After test drive, recheck for codes to confirm proper EVAP system operation
