Replace both headlight bulbs on a 2016-2024 Hyundai Tucson with 2.5L I4 AWD engine by accessing the bulb assemblies from the engine bay.

Warnings

Allow headlights to cool for at least 15 minutes if recently operated to prevent burns
Never touch halogen bulb glass with bare fingers - oils from skin cause premature bulb failure and hot spots
ℹ️Low beam bulbs are H11 type, high beam bulbs are 9005 type - verify which bulbs need replacement before starting

Tools required

Nitrile gloves (to handle bulbs)Essential
10mm socket wrench
Flathead screwdriver
Clean microfiber cloth

Parts

  • H11 halogen headlight bulb (low beam) × 2 — H11 55W bulb or OEM equivalent
  • 9005 halogen headlight bulb (high beam) × 2 — 9005 65W bulb or OEM equivalent (if replacing high beams)

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and turn off engine
  2. Allow headlights to cool if recently used
  3. Open hood and secure with prop rod
  4. Put on nitrile gloves to handle new bulbs without contaminating glass

Procedure

  1. 1
    Locate headlight assembly access covers
From the engine bay, locate the back of the headlight assembly. You will see round rubber or plastic dust covers for the low beam (larger, positioned lower/outer) and high beam (smaller, positioned higher/inner). Identify which bulb position needs replacement.
  2. 2
    Remove bulb access cover
Grip the rubber dust cover for the bulb being replaced and rotate counterclockwise approximately 1/4 turn, then pull straight out to remove. On some models, you may need to squeeze tabs while pulling. Set cover aside in clean location.
  3. 3
    Disconnect bulb electrical connector
Locate the electrical connector attached to the back of the bulb socket. Press the release tab (usually on top or side) and pull connector straight off the bulb base. Do not pull on wiring harness.
  4. 4
    Remove old bulb from socket
The bulb is held by a wire spring clip or twist-lock mechanism. For wire clip: press clip tabs together and swing clip out of the way, then pull bulb straight out. For twist-lock: rotate bulb counterclockwise about 1/4 turn and pull out. Note the orientation of the bulb for installation.
  5. 5
Inspect bulb socket and clean if necessary
Check the socket for any corrosion, moisture, or debris. If present, clean with dry microfiber cloth. Inspect electrical pins inside socket for damage or discoloration. If socket shows significant corrosion or damage, it should be replaced separately.
  6. 6
    Install new bulb
Remove new bulb from packaging using nitrile gloves. Do not touch glass portion. If glass was accidentally touched, clean with alcohol and microfiber cloth. Align bulb tabs with socket slots, insert bulb fully, and secure with wire clip or twist-lock mechanism (reverse of removal). Ensure bulb is seated completely and retention mechanism is fully engaged.
  7. 7
    Reconnect electrical connector
Push electrical connector firmly onto bulb base terminals until you hear/feel a click. Gently tug connector to verify it is locked in place. Ensure no wires are pinched or stressed.
  8. 8
    Reinstall dust cover
Align dust cover with housing opening and press firmly while rotating clockwise to lock in place. Ensure cover is fully seated to prevent moisture intrusion into headlight assembly.
  9. 9
    Repeat for opposite side
Perform steps 2-8 for the opposite side headlight assembly. Both bulbs should be replaced as a pair to ensure even light output and color temperature.

Reassembly

  1. Verify all dust covers are properly seated and locked
  2. Ensure no tools or parts were left in engine bay
  3. Close hood securely

Verification

  • Turn ignition to ON position (engine does not need to run)
  • Turn headlight switch to low beam position and verify both headlights illuminate with equal brightness
  • Switch to high beam position and verify both high beams illuminate (if replaced)
  • Turn headlights off, then cycle them on/off twice more to confirm consistent operation
  • Visually inspect beam pattern against a flat surface (wall or garage door) to ensure proper alignment - both beams should be at same height
