Parts
- Horn assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park the vehicle on a level surface and engage the parking brake
- Turn off the ignition and remove the key
- Disconnect the negative battery terminal and wait 3 minutes for airbag system discharge
- Turn the front wheels to full right lock for better access to the driver's side wheel well
Procedure
- 1Remove wheel well liner fastenersLocate the plastic fasteners and screws securing the front driver's side wheel well liner. Remove the forward section fasteners to create an access opening. You may need to remove 3-5 push clips and screws depending on the model year. Pull the liner back gently to access the horn location.
- 2Locate the horn assemblyWith the wheel well liner pulled back, locate the horn assembly mounted on the front frame rail behind the bumper cover. The horn is a circular unit approximately 4 inches in diameter with a single electrical connector and one mounting bolt.
- 3Disconnect the electrical connectorPress the locking tab on the horn electrical connector and pull it straight off the horn terminal. Inspect the connector terminals for corrosion or damage. If corroded, clean with electrical contact cleaner.
- 4Remove the horn mounting boltUsing a 12mm socket with extension, remove the single horn mounting bolt. Note the ground connection point at this bolt location. Keep the bolt and any washers for reinstallation or comparison with new hardware.Torque specHorn Mounting Bolt15 Nm (11 lb-ft)
- 5Remove the horn assemblyPull the horn assembly away from the mounting bracket. Inspect the mounting surface and bracket for rust or damage. Clean the mounting surface with a wire brush if necessary to ensure proper grounding.
- 6Test the old horn (optional)If diagnosing horn function, use a multimeter to check horn resistance across the terminals (should be 3-6 ohms). Alternatively, apply 12V directly from the battery to test horn operation. If the horn sounds when powered directly, the issue is in the wiring or horn relay.
- 7Install the new hornPosition the new horn assembly onto the mounting bracket, aligning the mounting hole. Ensure the ground contact surface is clean and making full metal-to-metal contact with the bracket. Insert the horn mounting bolt and hand-tighten.Torque specHorn Mounting Bolt15 Nm (11 lb-ft)
- 8Torque the mounting boltUsing a torque wrench and 12mm socket, tighten the horn mounting bolt to 15.0 Nm (11.0 lb-ft). This torque is critical for proper electrical grounding of the horn assembly.Torque specHorn Mounting Bolt15 Nm (11 lb-ft)
- 9Connect the electrical connectorPush the electrical connector firmly onto the horn terminal until you hear or feel the locking tab click into place. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is fully seated and locked.
- 10Reinstall the wheel well linerPush the wheel well liner back into position and reinstall all fasteners and push clips that were removed. Ensure the liner is properly seated and not interfering with the tire or suspension components.
Reassembly
- Reconnect the negative battery terminal and tighten securely
- Return the steering wheel to center position
- Verify all tools and parts have been removed from the wheel well area
Verification
- Start the vehicle and allow all systems to initialize
- Press the horn button on the steering wheel to verify proper horn operation
- Check that the horn sounds with appropriate volume and tone
- Verify no warning lights are illuminated on the instrument cluster
- Turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock while stationary to confirm the wheel well liner is not contacting the tire
