Complete engine oil and filter change service for the 2016-2024 Hyundai Tucson with 2.5L I4 engine, including drain plug washer replacement and fluid level verification.
Warnings
⚠️Engine oil can reach temperatures exceeding 200°F during operation. Allow engine to cool for at least 30 minutes before beginning work to prevent severe burns.
⚠Ensure vehicle is on level ground and properly supported on jack stands before working underneath. Never rely solely on a hydraulic jack.
ℹ️This engine uses a cartridge-type oil filter with a housing cap, not a spin-on filter. Ensure you have the correct replacement cartridge.

Parts
- Engine oil filter cartridge × 1 — 26320-2E300 or equivalent
- Oil drain plug crush washer × 1 — 21513-23001 or equivalent
Fluids
- Hyundai Genuine 0W-20 — 5 qt
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
- Allow engine to cool if recently operated (minimum 30 minutes)
- Raise front of vehicle using appropriate lift equipment and support on jack stands
- Locate oil drain plug on rear-facing side of oil pan and cartridge oil filter housing on front of engine block
- Place oil drain pan beneath drain plug location
Procedure
- 1Remove oil filler capOpen hood and locate oil filler cap on top of valve cover. Remove cap by turning counterclockwise to allow air to enter the crankcase and facilitate draining.
- 2Remove skid plate if equippedIf vehicle is equipped with an engine skid plate, remove mounting bolts using appropriate socket and set plate aside. Some models may have plastic access panels instead of full skid plates.
- 3Drain engine oilPosition drain pan directly beneath oil drain plug. Using 17mm socket or wrench, loosen drain plug counterclockwise. Remove plug by hand for final turns, allowing oil to drain completely. This will take approximately 5-7 minutes. Inspect drain plug threads and oil pan threads for damage.⚠Oil may drain with force initially. Position drain pan to catch full stream and keep hands clear of hot oil flow.
- 4Replace drain plug crush washerRemove old crush washer from drain plug and discard. Install new crush washer onto drain plug, ensuring it seats properly in the recessed groove. Do not reuse old crush washer as this can lead to leaks.
- 5Reinstall drain plugOnce oil has fully drained, clean drain plug and oil pan mating surface with shop rag. Thread drain plug by hand clockwise until snug, then torque to specification using torque wrench.Torque specOil Drain Plug35 Nm (26 lb-ft)
- 6Remove oil filter housing capReposition drain pan beneath oil filter housing on front of engine block. Using appropriate cartridge filter cap tool (typically 74mm or 76mm socket), loosen housing cap counterclockwise. Remove cap slowly to allow residual oil in housing to drain into pan.
- 7Replace oil filter cartridgeRemove old filter cartridge from housing. Inspect housing for debris or metal particles and clean if necessary. Check that old O-ring came out with cap and did not remain in housing groove. Install new filter cartridge into housing, ensuring it seats properly. Lubricate new O-ring on cap with clean engine oil.ℹ️Verify old O-ring was removed from housing groove. Installing new cap with old O-ring still in place will cause severe oil leaks.
- 8Reinstall oil filter housing capThread housing cap clockwise by hand until it contacts housing, then torque to specification using torque wrench. Do not overtighten as this can damage housing threads or crush O-ring excessively.Torque specOil Filter Housing Cap25 Nm (18 lb-ft)
- 9Reinstall skid plate if equippedIf skid plate was removed, clean mating surfaces and reinstall plate. Torque mounting bolts to specification in a cross-pattern to ensure even seating.
- 10Add new engine oilLower vehicle to ground. Using funnel, add 4.5 quarts of Hyundai Genuine 0W-20 engine oil through filler neck. Add final 0.5 quarts slowly while monitoring level. Install oil filler cap and torque hand-tight only (do not use tools).
- 11Start engine and check for leaksStart engine and allow to idle for 30-60 seconds. Monitor oil pressure warning light (should extinguish within 2-3 seconds). Shut off engine and immediately inspect drain plug and filter housing for leaks from underneath vehicle.
- 12Verify oil levelWait 5 minutes for oil to settle into pan. Remove dipstick, wipe clean, reinsert fully, then remove again to check level. Oil level should be between MIN and MAX marks on dipstick. Add oil in small increments if needed to reach proper level within marked range.
Reassembly
- Ensure oil filler cap is properly installed and hand-tight
- Verify no tools or rags were left in engine compartment
- Record mileage and date of oil change for maintenance tracking
Verification
- Oil level reads between MIN and MAX marks on dipstick when checked on level ground with engine off
- No oil leaks visible at drain plug or filter housing after initial startup
- Oil pressure warning light extinguishes within 2-3 seconds of engine start
- Proper disposal of used oil and filter at approved recycling facility
