This procedure covers removal and replacement of the oil level sensor on the 2016-2024 Hyundai Tucson 2.5L I4 AWD engine, located on the lower engine block.

Warnings

Perform this work only when the engine is completely cold to prevent burns from hot oil or components
The oil level sensor is located low on the engine block and will drain oil when removed; have drain pan ready
ℹ️This sensor monitors oil level in the pan and sends data to the instrument cluster; fault codes P0520-P0524 may indicate sensor failure

Parts

  • Oil level sensor × 1 — Use OEM Hyundai part 94750-3C100
  • Oil level sensor O-ring × 1 — Typically included with sensor

Fluids

  • Hyundai Genuine 0W-20 — 1 qt

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels for added safety
  3. Allow engine to cool completely for at least 2 hours
  4. Raise vehicle using lift or jack stands to access underside safely
  5. Remove engine splash shield using 10mm socket (8-12 bolts depending on configuration)
  6. Locate oil level sensor on lower passenger side of engine block, near oil pan

Procedure

  1. 1
    Disconnect electrical connector
Press the locking tab on the oil level sensor electrical connector and pull straight away from the sensor. Inspect connector pins for corrosion or damage.
  2. 2
    Position drain pan
Place oil drain pan directly beneath the oil level sensor. Expect approximately 0.5-1 quart of engine oil to drain when the sensor is removed, depending on current oil level.
  3. 3
    Remove oil level sensor
Using a 22mm wrench or socket, turn the oil level sensor counterclockwise to remove. Oil will begin draining immediately once sensor threads clear the block. Allow oil to drain completely into pan.
    Torque spec
    Oil Level Sensor15 Nm (11 lb-ft)
  4. 4
    Clean sensor mounting location
Use shop rags to wipe away any residual oil from the sensor bore in the engine block. Inspect the threaded hole for debris, metal particles, or damage. Use wire brush if necessary to clean threads, then wipe clean with parts cleaner.
  5. 5
    Inspect new sensor
Verify new oil level sensor includes O-ring or sealing washer. Ensure threads are clean and undamaged. Do not apply thread sealant or anti-seize as the O-ring provides the seal.
  6. 6
    Install new oil level sensor
Thread new oil level sensor into engine block by hand until finger-tight, ensuring it starts squarely to avoid cross-threading. Using torque wrench and 22mm socket, tighten sensor to specification.
    Torque spec
    Oil Level Sensor15 Nm (11 lb-ft)
  7. 7
    Reconnect electrical connector
Push electrical connector firmly onto sensor until locking tab clicks into place. Tug gently to verify secure connection.
  8. 8
    Check and refill engine oil
Lower vehicle to level ground. Remove oil fill cap and add engine oil to replace what was lost during sensor removal (approximately 1 quart). Start with 0.75 quarts, then check dipstick and add as needed to reach proper level between MIN and MAX marks.
  9. 9
    Reinstall engine splash shield
Position engine splash shield and secure all mounting bolts. Ensure all clips and fasteners are properly seated.

Reassembly

  1. Verify all tools and materials are removed from engine bay and undercarriage
  2. Double-check electrical connector is fully seated and locked
  3. Wipe up any spilled oil from undercarriage to prevent smoke on first startup

Verification

  • Start engine and verify no oil leaks from sensor location; inspect for 2-3 minutes
  • Check instrument cluster to confirm oil level warning light functions properly (should illuminate briefly at key-on, then extinguish)
  • Use scan tool to verify no oil pressure/level fault codes are present
  • Recheck oil level on dipstick after engine reaches operating temperature and is shut off for 5 minutes
  • Test drive vehicle and confirm oil level sensor reading is accurate on instrument cluster if equipped with digital oil level display
