Replace the parking brake cable(s) on a 2016-2024 Hyundai Tucson 2.5L AWD to restore proper parking brake operation.
Warnings
⚠️SAFETY-CRITICAL: Parking brake failure can cause vehicle rollaway resulting in severe injury or death. If any step is unclear, seek professional service immediately.
⚠️Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always use jack stands rated for the vehicle weight.
⚠️Ensure vehicle is on level ground and properly supported before beginning work. Use wheel chocks on front wheels.
⚠Parking brake cables are under tension. Release parking brake fully before disconnecting cables to avoid injury.
⚠Verify proper cable routing before final installation. Incorrect routing can cause premature failure or interference with suspension/exhaust components.
ℹ️This procedure may require adjustment of the parking brake equalizer after installation to achieve proper brake holding force.

Parts
- Parking brake cable assembly (left, right, or both as needed) × 1 — Use OEM specification - Hyundai part number varies by cable position
- Cable clips/retainers (if damaged) × 1 — Inspect during removal
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level, solid surface and engage parking brake initially
- Place wheel chocks in front of both front wheels
- Release parking brake pedal/lever fully before lifting vehicle
- Loosen rear wheel lug nuts while vehicle is on ground (do not remove)
- Lift rear of vehicle using floor jack at manufacturer-specified lift points
- Support vehicle securely on jack stands rated for vehicle weight - place stands under rear subframe or axle mounting points
- Remove both rear wheels completely
- Spray cable attachment points, brackets, and equalizer nut with penetrating oil if visible corrosion present
- Allow 10-15 minutes for penetrating oil to work before attempting removal
Procedure
- 1Access parking brake cable at rear brake assembliesFrom underneath vehicle, locate the parking brake cables connected to each rear brake caliper or drum assembly (Tucson uses rear disc brakes with integrated parking brake mechanism). Identify the cable routing from the brake assembly forward to the equalizer bracket under the vehicle center.
- 2Disconnect cable from brake caliper/actuatorAt each rear brake assembly, locate the parking brake cable connection to the actuator arm. Use pliers to compress the cable housing retaining clip and pull the cable housing from the mounting bracket on the caliper. Disconnect the cable end from the actuator lever by rotating it to disengage the ball end from the lever slot. Note the cable routing and position of any retention clips.
- 3Remove cable brackets along underbodyFollow the cable forward from the rear brake assembly toward the center of the vehicle. Remove all cable bracket bolts securing the cable to the vehicle underbody, subframe, or trailing arms. Use 10mm or 12mm socket as appropriate. Keep track of bracket positions and orientations for reinstallation.Torque specBracket Bolts102 Nm (75 lb-ft)
- 4Access equalizer assemblyLocate the parking brake cable equalizer assembly under the center of the vehicle, typically just forward of the rear axle. The equalizer is where the left and right cables meet and connect to the main cable leading to the parking brake pedal/lever. Clean the area around the equalizer nut to prevent contamination.
- 5Loosen equalizer nut and disconnect cablesUsing a 12mm or 14mm wrench (verify size), loosen and remove the equalizer nut that tensions the parking brake cables. This nut threads onto the main cable and provides adjustment tension. Once loosened, disconnect the left and right parking brake cables from the equalizer bracket by releasing their retaining clips or pins. Note the cable orientation and connection method.Torque specEqualizer Nut15 Nm (11 lb-ft)
- 6Remove old parking brake cable(s)Pull the old parking brake cable(s) through all brackets and mounting points, working from rear to equalizer. Note exact cable routing, especially where cables pass near exhaust components, fuel lines, or suspension parts. Take photos if necessary to document routing. Inspect all mounting brackets and clips for damage or excessive wear.
- 7Prepare and route new cableCompare new parking brake cable to old cable to verify correct part. Clean all bracket mounting surfaces with wire brush. Route new cable following exact path of old cable, ensuring cable does not contact exhaust system, sharp edges, or moving suspension components. Verify cable has adequate clearance throughout suspension travel.
- 8Install cable brackets along underbodyInstall all cable retention brackets along the underbody, trailing arms, and subframe in their original positions. Hand-tighten all cable bracket bolts first to allow cable position adjustment. Once cable routing is verified correct with no binding or interference, torque all cable bracket bolts to specification using torque wrench.⚠CRITICAL: Follow torque sequence if specified in service manual. Over-torquing can strip threads in sheet metal mounting points.Torque specBracket Bolts102 Nm (75 lb-ft)
- 9Connect cable to equalizer assemblyAt the equalizer assembly, connect the new parking brake cable(s) to the equalizer bracket. Ensure cable ends are fully seated in their retaining positions. Thread the equalizer nut onto the main cable adjustment threads but do not tighten to final specification yet - leave loose for initial adjustment.
- 10Connect cable to rear brake assembliesAt each rear brake caliper, route the cable end to the parking brake actuator lever. Connect the cable ball end to the actuator lever slot by rotating into position. Push the cable housing into the caliper mounting bracket until the retaining clip fully engages with an audible click. Verify cable moves freely without binding when actuator lever is moved by hand.
- 11Perform initial parking brake adjustmentInside the vehicle, ensure parking brake pedal/lever is in the fully released position. Under the vehicle, tighten the equalizer nut until slight resistance is felt on both rear cables - approximately 1-2 clicks of resistance when parking brake is applied. Do not overtighten. Torque equalizer nut to specification. This is an initial adjustment only; final adjustment will be performed after verification.⚠Equalizer nut tension is critical - too loose results in ineffective parking brake, too tight causes brake drag and premature wear. Follow manufacturer adjustment procedure.Torque specEqualizer Nut15 Nm (11 lb-ft)
- 12Reinstall wheels and lower vehicleReinstall both rear wheels, threading lug nuts by hand first. Lower vehicle until wheels just touch ground but vehicle weight is still on jack stands. Torque wheel lug nuts to specification in star pattern. Fully lower vehicle and remove jack stands. Perform final lug nut torque verification.Torque specWheel Lug Nuts136 Nm (100 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Double-check all cable bracket bolts are torqued to specification and none were missed
- Verify no tools or parts were left under vehicle
- Ensure parking brake cable has minimum 10mm clearance from exhaust components at all points
- Confirm cable routing does not interfere with suspension travel by manually compressing suspension
- Verify all cable retaining clips are fully engaged at brake calipers
Verification
- With vehicle on level ground and transmission in neutral (engine off), apply parking brake pedal/lever and count the number of clicks - should engage within 5-8 clicks for proper adjustment
- Attempt to push vehicle with parking brake engaged - vehicle should not roll on level ground
- Release parking brake and verify rear wheels rotate freely by hand with no drag or resistance
- If brake drag is present, loosen equalizer nut slightly and re-adjust
- Test drive vehicle at low speed in safe area, verifying parking brake releases fully and rear brakes do not drag during normal driving
- Perform final parking brake hold test on a slight incline - vehicle should hold position without rolling
- If parking brake does not hold adequately or engages in fewer than 3 clicks, readjust equalizer nut per manufacturer specification
- Inspect cable routing one final time after test drive to ensure no contact with exhaust or suspension components
