This procedure replaces the power steering return hose on 2016-2024 Hyundai Tucson models equipped with the 2.5L I4 engine and AWD. Note: These models use electric power steering and do not have traditional hydraulic power steering hoses.
Warnings
ℹ️2016-2024 Hyundai Tucson models with the 2.5L I4 engine use Electric Power Steering (EPS) systems and do NOT have hydraulic power steering fluid, pumps, or traditional power steering hoses. Verify your specific vehicle configuration before ordering parts.
⚠If your vehicle does have a hydraulic power steering system (verify by checking for a reservoir under the hood), fluid will drain when hoses are disconnected. Have a drain pan ready.
⚠Ensure vehicle is securely supported on jack stands before working underneath. Never rely solely on a floor jack.

Parts
- Power steering return hose (if equipped) × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Hose clamps × 2 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Verify your vehicle actually has a hydraulic power steering system by checking for a power steering fluid reservoir in the engine bay. Most 2016-2024 Tucson models use electric power steering.
- Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
- Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
- If hydraulic power steering is confirmed, locate and identify the return hose routing from the steering rack to the reservoir
- Raise front of vehicle using floor jack and support securely on jack stands
- Remove front driver side wheel to improve access if needed
Procedure
- 1Access the power steering componentsRemove any necessary undertray panels or splash shields to access the steering rack area. Most access will be from underneath the vehicle. Use trim removal tools to avoid breaking clips.
- 2Identify return hose routingLocate the power steering return hose. The return hose is the low-pressure line running from the steering rack back to the reservoir. It is typically smaller diameter than the pressure hose and uses spring clamps or worm-drive clamps rather than threaded fittings.
- 3Drain remaining fluidPosition drain pan beneath the hose connections. If accessible, remove the power steering reservoir cap to allow easier drainage. Use a fluid transfer pump to remove as much fluid as possible from the reservoir before disconnecting lines.⚠Power steering fluid can be slippery. Clean up any spills immediately to prevent falls or contamination of other components.
- 4Disconnect hose at reservoirUsing pliers or a hose clamp tool, compress or loosen the clamp at the reservoir connection. Slide the clamp back along the hose. Gently twist and pull the hose off the reservoir nipple. Allow fluid to drain into the pan.
- 5Disconnect hose at steering rackLocate the return hose connection at the steering rack. Release the clamp using pliers or appropriate tool, slide it back, and remove the hose from the rack fitting. Allow any remaining fluid to drain completely.
- 6Remove return hoseTrace the hose routing and release any clips or brackets securing the hose to the chassis or other components. Remove the old return hose from the vehicle. Note the exact routing for installation of the new hose.
- 7Install new return hoseRoute the new return hose following the same path as the original. Ensure the hose does not contact any sharp edges, hot components, or moving parts. The hose should have no kinks or tight bends that could restrict flow.
- 8Connect hose at steering rackPush the hose firmly onto the steering rack return fitting until it seats completely. Install a new hose clamp and position it approximately 10mm from the end of the hose. Tighten the clamp securely but avoid over-tightening which could damage the hose.
- 9Connect hose at reservoirPush the hose firmly onto the reservoir return nipple until fully seated. Install a new clamp, position it properly, and tighten securely. Verify both connections are secure and hose is properly routed.
- 10Secure hose routingReinstall all routing clips and brackets to secure the hose in its proper position. Ensure adequate clearance from exhaust components, suspension parts, and the drive axle.
- 11Reinstall underbody panelsReinstall any splash shields or undertray panels that were removed. Ensure all clips and fasteners are properly seated.
- 12Reinstall wheelIf the front wheel was removed, reinstall it and hand-tighten lug nuts in a star pattern. Lower the vehicle to the ground and torque lug nuts to specification in a star pattern.Torque specWheel Lug Nuts136 Nm (100 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- If hydraulic power steering is present, refill the reservoir with the appropriate power steering fluid to the MAX line
- Start the engine and turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock several times to bleed air from the system
- Check fluid level and top off as needed
- Inspect all connections for leaks while engine is running and steering is being cycled
- Road test the vehicle and verify normal power steering operation with no leaks
Verification
- Check for fluid leaks at both hose connections with engine running
- Verify power steering operates smoothly with no unusual noises
- Confirm fluid level is at the proper mark on the reservoir
- Inspect hose routing to ensure no contact with moving or hot components
- Re-check all connections after a short test drive
