This procedure covers removal and replacement of the factory radio/head unit in a 2016-2024 Hyundai Tucson with 2.5L I4 engine, including disconnecting the battery, removing trim panels, and installing a new or replacement head unit.
Warnings
⚠Disconnecting the battery will reset radio presets, clock, and may trigger some vehicle systems to require relearning procedures.
ℹ️If installing an afterband head unit, verify compatibility with factory steering wheel controls, backup camera, and other integrated systems before beginning.
⚠Trim panels and clips are fragile. Use proper trim removal tools to avoid breaking clips or cracking panels.

Parts
- Replacement radio/head unit (factory or aftermarket) × 1 — Use OEM specification or compatible aftermarket unit
- Wiring harness adapter (if using aftermarket unit) × 1 — Vehicle-specific harness adapter
- Mounting bracket adapter (if using aftermarket unit) × 1 — Vehicle-specific mounting kit
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake.
- Ensure ignition is off and key/fob is removed from vehicle.
- Allow interior to cool if vehicle has been running (climate control components may be warm).
- Gather all tools and replacement parts before beginning.
- Review wiring diagram for aftermarket installations to identify proper connections.
Procedure
- 1Disconnect battery negative terminalOpen hood and locate the battery in the engine bay. Using a 10mm socket, loosen the negative (-) terminal bolt and remove the cable. Secure the cable away from the battery terminal to prevent accidental reconnection. Wait at least 3 minutes for vehicle systems to discharge.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 2Remove lower dashboard trim panelLocate the lower dashboard trim panel below the radio/head unit. Insert panel removal tools at the clip locations (typically 4-6 clips along the perimeter). Gently pry outward to release each clip, working from one side to the other. Pull the panel away from the dashboard and set aside.
- 3Remove climate control panel trimUsing panel removal tools, carefully pry around the perimeter of the climate control/radio trim bezel. This panel typically has 6-8 clips holding it in place. Start at the bottom corners and work upward. Once all clips are released, pull the trim panel forward slightly. If equipped with hazard button or other switches, disconnect the electrical connectors by pressing the release tabs before fully removing the panel.
- 4Remove head unit mounting screwsWith the trim bezel removed, locate the four Phillips-head screws securing the radio/head unit to the mounting bracket (two on each side). Remove all four screws completely and set aside. Support the head unit with one hand as you remove the final screws to prevent it from falling.
- 5Extract head unit from dashboardCarefully pull the head unit straight out from the dashboard opening approximately 4-6 inches until you can access the rear connectors. Support the unit with both hands and avoid pulling on any wiring harnesses.
- 6Disconnect antenna and wiring harnessesLocate the main wiring harness connector (large multi-pin connector), antenna cable (coaxial connector), and any additional connectors (USB, microphone, etc.). Disconnect the antenna cable by pulling straight out. For the main harness, press the release tab and pull the connector straight back. Disconnect any remaining auxiliary connectors. Remove the factory head unit completely.
- 7Prepare new head unit for installationIf installing a factory replacement, proceed directly to installation. If installing an aftermarket unit, attach the wiring harness adapter to the vehicle's factory harness, ensuring all connections match the wiring diagram. Install any required mounting brackets or adapters to the new head unit according to the kit instructions. Connect any additional accessories such as microphone adapters or USB extensions.
- 8Connect new head unitConnect the main wiring harness to the new head unit, ensuring the connector clicks into place securely. Connect the antenna cable by pushing it firmly onto the antenna input until it seats completely. Connect any auxiliary connections (USB, microphone, etc.). Verify all connections are secure before proceeding.
- 9Test head unit operationBefore securing the unit in the dashboard, reconnect the battery negative terminal temporarily and tighten to specification. Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position and verify the head unit powers on, displays correctly, and all functions operate (radio, backup camera if equipped, steering wheel controls, etc.). If any functions do not work, recheck wiring connections. Once verified, turn off ignition and disconnect battery negative terminal again.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 10Install head unit into dashboardCarefully route all wiring harnesses behind the head unit, ensuring no wires are pinched or kinked. Slide the head unit into the dashboard opening, aligning the mounting holes with the bracket. Push the unit in until it sits flush with the mounting surface.
- 11Secure head unit mounting screwsInstall the four mounting screws through the head unit into the bracket. Start all four screws by hand first, then tighten in a cross pattern (top left, bottom right, top right, bottom left) to ensure even seating. Tighten screws to specification using a torque wrench.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 12Reinstall trim panelsIf applicable, reconnect any electrical connectors for switches in the trim bezel. Align the climate control/radio trim bezel with the dashboard and press firmly around all clip locations until each clip snaps into place. Verify the panel sits flush all around. Reinstall the lower dashboard trim panel by aligning and pressing until all clips engage.
- 13Reconnect battery and finalizeReconnect the battery negative terminal and tighten the terminal bolt to specification. Close the hood. Turn the ignition to ON and verify all head unit functions operate correctly. Set the clock and restore radio presets as needed.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Ensure all trim panels are fully seated with no gaps or misalignment.
- Verify all dashboard switches and controls in the trim panels function correctly.
- Check that the head unit sits flush with surrounding trim and operates without rattles or vibrations.
- Restore any vehicle settings that were reset when the battery was disconnected.
Verification
- Turn ignition to ON and verify head unit powers on and displays correctly.
- Test all audio sources (AM/FM radio, Bluetooth, USB, etc.) to ensure proper operation.
- If equipped, shift into reverse and verify backup camera displays on the head unit screen.
- Test steering wheel audio controls to confirm they communicate with the new head unit.
- Check that all climate controls and other dashboard functions operate normally.
- Verify no warning lights are illuminated on the instrument cluster related to the head unit or electrical system.
- Inspect all reinstalled trim panels for proper fit and secure attachment.
