Warnings
⚠️Disconnect the negative battery terminal and wait 3 minutes before working on seat components to prevent airbag deployment
⚠Seat heater elements are fragile and can be damaged by excessive bending or sharp objects during installation
⚠Mark all electrical connector orientations before disconnection to ensure proper reassembly
ℹ️Take photos of hog ring locations and upholstery routing before disassembly for accurate reinstallation

Parts
- Seat heater element × 1 — Use OEM specification for specific seat position
- Hog rings × 20 — Universal seat upholstery hog rings
- Wire connector terminals × 2 — If original connectors are damaged
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and ensure parking brake is engaged
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait minimum 3 minutes for airbag system capacitors to discharge
- Move seat to full forward position to access rear mounting bolts
- Move seat to full rearward position to access front mounting bolts
- Verify which seat requires heater element replacement by testing with diagnostic tool if available
Procedure
- 1Disconnect seat electrical connectorsLocate the electrical connectors under the seat. Press the release tabs and disconnect all connectors including seat heater, airbag, occupancy sensor, and power seat connectors if equipped. Label each connector position with tape or take photos for reference.
- 2Remove seat mounting boltsRemove the four seat mounting bolts securing the seat to the floor rails. These are typically 14mm bolts located at each corner of the seat base. Support the seat weight while removing the final bolts.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 3Remove seat from vehicleCarefully lift the seat assembly out of the vehicle. Seat weighs approximately 40-60 lbs depending on configuration. Place seat upside down on a protected work surface with adequate lighting.
- 4Remove seat back coverIf replacing seat back heater element, remove plastic covers on the rear of seat back using trim removal tools. Remove any retaining screws securing the seat back cover. Note the location of all fasteners and clips.
- 5Release upholstery hog ringsUsing hog ring pliers, carefully remove the hog rings securing the seat upholstery to the seat frame. Work methodically around the perimeter of the seat cushion or seat back. Count and note hog ring positions. Typically 15-25 hog rings per seat section.
- 6Separate seat cover from foamCarefully peel back the seat cover from the foam padding. Work slowly to avoid tearing the fabric or damaging the foam. If cover is stuck, use a heat gun on low setting to soften adhesive. Expose the existing heater element completely.
- 7Remove old heater elementDisconnect the heater element wiring connector. The element may be adhesive-backed or sewn into the cover. If adhesive, carefully peel element from fabric. If sewn, cut stitching threads carefully without damaging seat cover material. Remove element completely and inspect seat cover for damage.
- 8Test new heater elementBefore installation, use multimeter to verify new heater element resistance. Typical resistance is 2-5 ohms depending on element wattage. Ensure element matches original specifications and connector type.
- 9Install new heater elementPosition new heater element on seat cover in same location as original. Ensure element wiring routes to same exit point. If adhesive-backed, remove protective backing and carefully press element onto fabric, working from center outward to eliminate air bubbles. Ensure element lies completely flat with no wrinkles or folds.
- 10Connect heater element wiringRoute heater element wire through seat frame opening to connector location. Connect element to seat wiring harness connector. Verify secure connection and proper polarity if applicable. Secure wiring with existing clips or tie wraps to prevent interference with seat mechanisms.
- 11Reinstall seat coverCarefully stretch seat cover back over foam padding, ensuring proper alignment with all seams and contours. Verify heater element remains flat and properly positioned with no bunching. Work cover completely onto seat frame perimeter.
- 12Install hog ringsUsing hog ring pliers, install new hog rings at original locations to secure seat cover to frame. Work around perimeter evenly to maintain proper tension. Ensure cover is evenly stretched without wrinkles. Install all hog rings securely to prevent cover movement.
- 13Reinstall seat in vehicleCarefully lift seat and position it over the floor mounting points. Align all four mounting bolt holes. Install mounting bolts finger-tight initially, then torque to specification in a cross pattern.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 14Reconnect electrical connectorsReconnect all seat electrical connectors in their original positions. Ensure each connector clicks securely and locking tabs engage fully. Verify no wires are pinched or interfering with seat travel.
- 15Reconnect battery and testReconnect negative battery terminal and torque to specification. Start vehicle and allow systems to initialize. Test seat heater operation on all heat settings. Verify even heating across seat surface and no warning lights on instrument cluster.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Ensure all seat mounting bolts are torqued to 27.0 Nm (20.0 lb-ft) or 34.0 Nm (25.0 lb-ft) depending on bolt size
- Verify all electrical connectors are fully seated with locking tabs engaged
- Test full range of seat travel and adjustments to ensure no interference from wiring
- Confirm seat back recline and fold functions operate normally if equipped
Verification
- Turn ignition on and activate seat heater function on all heat level settings
- Allow seat to heat for 5-10 minutes and verify even heat distribution across entire seat surface
- Check for any warning lights or fault codes related to seat heater system
- Verify no unusual odors from seat during heating cycle
- Confirm seat heater indicator lights function correctly on dash or seat controls
- Test that seat heater turns off completely when deactivated
