This procedure covers removal and replacement of the steering wheel on a 2016-2024 Hyundai Tucson with 2.5L engine, including proper airbag system disarming and torque specifications.
Warnings
⚠️Airbag system must be fully disarmed with battery disconnected for at least 3 minutes before starting work. Failure to do so can result in deployment and serious injury.
⚠️Never strike the steering wheel or airbag module. Handle airbag with care and place face-up on a clean, padded surface.
⚠Do not turn the clockspring more than 2.5 turns in either direction once steering wheel is removed, or it may be damaged.
⚠Wheels must be pointed straight ahead before removal to maintain clockspring alignment.
ℹ️This vehicle uses electric power steering - no fluid service required.

Parts
- Steering wheel (if damaged) × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Airbag module (if damaged or deployed) × 1 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface with front wheels pointed straight ahead
- Turn ignition off and remove key completely
- Disconnect negative battery terminal using 10mm socket
- Wait minimum 3 minutes for airbag system capacitors to discharge
- Verify steering wheel is centered and wheels are straight
Procedure
- 1Mark steering wheel alignmentUsing masking tape or paint marker, mark the steering wheel position relative to the steering column shaft. This ensures proper alignment during reinstallation and maintains clockspring position.
- 2Access airbag module fastenersLocate the two small access holes on the left and right sides of the steering wheel (behind the wheel at 3 and 9 o'clock positions). Insert flathead screwdriver into each hole and push the spring clip inward to release the airbag module retention clips.
- 3Remove airbag moduleCarefully pull the airbag module away from the steering wheel. Disconnect the airbag electrical connector by pressing the release tab and pulling straight out. Disconnect the horn connector if equipped. Place airbag module face-up on a clean, padded surface away from work area.⚠️Never place airbag module face-down. Always store face-up on a clean surface.
- 4Disconnect steering wheel connectorsLocate and disconnect all electrical connectors behind the steering wheel including cruise control switches, audio controls, and paddle shifters if equipped. Note connector positions for reassembly.
- 5Remove steering wheel nutUsing a 19mm socket, remove the steering wheel retaining nut. Keep this nut as it will be reused. Note the position of any washers or spacers.Torque specSteering Wheel Nut54 Nm (40 lb-ft)
- 6Remove steering wheelGrip the steering wheel firmly at 3 and 9 o'clock positions and pull straight back with moderate force while rocking slightly side-to-side. If wheel does not release, use a proper steering wheel puller - never strike or pry the wheel. Once released, carefully pull wheel off while feeding wiring through the center opening.⚠Do not rotate the clockspring mechanism on the column. If it must be rotated, do not exceed 2.5 turns in either direction.
- 7Inspect clockspring and columnVerify the clockspring is centered and not damaged. Check for yellow alignment marks or centering indicators visible on the clockspring. Inspect steering column shaft splines for damage or wear.
- 8Install steering wheelAlign the steering wheel splines with the column shaft, matching your alignment marks from Step 1. Feed all electrical connectors through the center opening. Push wheel straight onto shaft until fully seated - you should feel it bottom out against the column.
- 9Install and torque steering wheel nutThread the steering wheel nut onto the shaft by hand, then torque to specification using a calibrated torque wrench. Verify steering wheel is properly centered and aligned with your reference marks.Torque specSteering Wheel Nut54 Nm (40 lb-ft)
- 10Reconnect electrical connectorsReconnect all steering wheel electrical connectors including cruise control, audio controls, paddle shifters (if equipped), and horn connector. Ensure all connectors click firmly into place.
- 11Reinstall airbag moduleConnect the airbag electrical connector and horn connector to the airbag module. Carefully align the airbag module with the steering wheel, ensuring wiring is not pinched. Push module into place until both retention clips audibly click and lock. Verify module is secure by gently pulling outward.⚠️Ensure airbag connector is fully seated and locked before installing module.Torque specAirbag Module Bolts7 Nm (5 lb-ft)
- 12Reconnect battery and verifyReconnect the negative battery terminal. Turn ignition to ON position (do not start engine). Verify the airbag warning light illuminates for approximately 6 seconds then extinguishes. If light stays on or flashes, disconnect battery immediately and check all connections.
Reassembly
- Torque all fasteners to specified values using a calibrated torque wrench
- Ensure all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
- Verify steering wheel is properly centered before final testing
- Double-check airbag module retention clips are fully engaged
Verification
- Start engine and verify all steering wheel controls function properly (horn, cruise, audio, paddles)
- Turn steering wheel lock-to-lock and verify smooth operation with no binding or unusual noises
- Confirm airbag warning light functions normally (illuminates then extinguishes within 6 seconds)
- Test drive vehicle to verify proper steering feel and response
- Verify steering wheel returns to center properly after turns
