Parts
- Aftermarket subwoofer and enclosure × 1 — Customer supplied
- Amplifier × 1 — Customer supplied
- Wiring kit (power, ground, RCA, remote) × 1 — 4-8 gauge kit depending on amplifier
- Inline fuse holder and fuse × 1 — Rated for amplifier draw
- Ring terminals for ground and power × 2 — Appropriate gauge for wire kit
- Add-a-fuse or fuse tap × 1 — For remote turn-on signal
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 3 minutes for airbag system to discharge
- Plan wire routing path from battery through firewall to cargo area
- Determine subwoofer and amplifier mounting locations in cargo area
- Verify all aftermarket components are compatible and gather manufacturer instructions
Procedure
- 1Remove interior trim panels for wire routingRemove the driver's side lower dash panel and door sill trim using panel removal tools. Carefully pry at clip locations to avoid breaking tabs. Remove rear cargo area side trim panel on driver's side where amplifier will be mounted. Set panels aside with clips organized for reinstallation.
- 2Route power wire from battery to cargo areaLocate an existing grommet in the firewall on the driver's side (typically near the main harness entry point). Make a small slit in the grommet or use an existing opening. Feed 4-8 gauge power wire from engine bay through firewall into cabin. Use fish tape if needed. Route wire under carpet along driver's side, beneath door sills, to cargo area. Keep wire away from pedals, moving parts, and sharp edges.
- 3Install inline fuse holder at batteryInstall the inline fuse holder on the power wire within 18 inches of the battery positive terminal. Do NOT install the fuse yet. Strip wire end and crimp ring terminal. Position wire for connection to battery positive terminal but do not connect yet.
- 4Establish ground connectionIn the cargo area, locate a factory ground point on the chassis or use an existing seat belt mounting bolt. Remove paint or coating from contact area using sandpaper or wire brush to ensure bare metal contact. Strip ground wire from kit, crimp ring terminal, and secure to ground point. Ensure connection is tight and making full metal-to-metal contact.Torque specGround Bolt14 Nm (10 lb-ft)
- 5Route RCA and remote turn-on wire to head unitRemove the head unit trim panel using panel removal tools. Disconnect head unit by pressing release tabs on harness connectors (vehicle may vary - some require removal of mounting screws). Locate RCA pre-amp outputs on back of head unit. If head unit lacks RCA outputs, use a line output converter connected to rear speaker wires. Connect RCA cables. Locate remote turn-on lead (typically blue wire or antenna trigger) and connect remote wire from amplifier kit. Route RCA and remote wire along same path as power wire to cargo area, keeping separate from power wire by at least 6 inches to prevent interference.
- 6Mount amplifierPosition amplifier in cargo area side panel location or under seat depending on size and preference. Ensure adequate ventilation around amplifier and that mounting location does not interfere with cargo area functions or safety equipment. Mark mounting hole locations. If mounting to plastic panel, use backing plates to distribute load. Drill pilot holes if needed and secure amplifier with appropriate fasteners. Do not overtighten plastic panels.
- 7Mount subwoofer enclosurePosition subwoofer enclosure in cargo area. Common locations are driver's side rear corner or center against rear seat. Ensure enclosure is secure and will not shift during vehicle operation. Use factory tie-down points, cargo anchors, or mount enclosure using bolts through cargo floor reinforced areas. For AWD models, ensure subwoofer does not interfere with spare tire access or cargo floor storage compartments.
- 8Connect wiring to amplifierConnect power wire to amplifier positive terminal and tighten set screw securely. Connect ground wire to amplifier ground terminal. Connect RCA cables to appropriate amplifier inputs (left/right channels). Connect remote turn-on wire to amplifier remote terminal. Connect speaker wire from amplifier output to subwoofer, observing correct polarity (positive to positive, negative to negative). Ensure all connections are tight and secure.
- 9Secure and protect all wiringUse zip ties to secure all wiring runs to existing harness bundles or structural points. Ensure wires do not hang loose, contact moving parts, or create trip hazards. Protect any wire passing through metal holes with grommets or edge protection. Coil and secure excess wire length neatly. Keep power wire separated from signal wires.
- 10Connect battery and install fuseReconnect negative battery terminal. Connect power wire ring terminal to battery positive terminal. Insert fuse into inline fuse holder near battery. Verify fuse rating matches amplifier specifications and wire gauge.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Reinstall all interior trim panels in reverse order of removal, ensuring all clips are properly seated
- Reinstall head unit and trim panel, ensuring all harness connectors are fully seated
- Verify door sill trim is properly secured and flush
- Check that no wires are pinched or visible after trim installation
Verification
- Turn ignition to ACC or ON position without starting engine
- Turn on head unit and verify amplifier powers on (check indicator LED if equipped)
- Play audio with bass content and verify subwoofer is functioning
- Check for distortion, rattles, or unusual noises at various volume levels
- Verify remote turn-on is working - amplifier should turn off when head unit is turned off
- Test all vehicle functions to ensure no interference with other systems
- Check for any blown fuses in vehicle fuse boxes
- Inspect all wiring connections for heat or looseness after 10-15 minutes of operation
