Replace tail light bulb assembly on the 2016-2024 Hyundai Tucson by accessing the bulb holder from inside the rear cargo area.

Warnings

Allow bulbs to cool for at least 5 minutes if vehicle was recently operated to avoid burns
ℹ️Avoid touching new bulb glass with bare fingers as skin oils can reduce bulb life - use clean cloth or gloves

Tools required

Phillips head screwdriver
Flathead screwdriver or trim removal tool
Clean cloth or gloves

Parts

  • Tail light bulb (stop/tail or turn signal as needed) × 1 — Check vehicle owner's manual for bulb type - typically 7443 for stop/tail, 7440A for turn signal

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and turn off ignition
  2. Open rear liftgate for access to cargo area
  3. Identify which bulb needs replacement (brake light, turn signal, reverse light, etc.)
  4. Purchase correct replacement bulb for the specific socket position

Procedure

  1. 1
Access tail light assembly from cargo area
From inside the rear cargo area, locate the trim panel or access cover on the inner side panel behind the tail light assembly. On the side requiring bulb replacement, look for a small rectangular or circular access panel.
  2. 2
    Remove access panel
Carefully pry out or unclip the interior access panel using a flathead screwdriver or trim tool. Some models have a small clip that releases, while others may have a Phillips screw. Remove the panel to expose the back of the tail light assembly.
  3. 3
    Locate and access bulb socket
Identify the correct bulb socket for the failed bulb. The tail light assembly typically has 3-4 sockets: stop/tail light (upper), turn signal (middle), reverse light (lower), and possibly side marker. Each socket is labeled or color-coded on the housing.
  4. 4
    Remove bulb socket from housing
Grasp the bulb socket firmly and rotate counterclockwise approximately 1/4 turn (90 degrees) until it stops. Pull the socket straight out from the tail light housing. Do not pull on the wiring harness.
  5. 5
    Remove failed bulb
For dual-filament bulbs (stop/tail), push the bulb in gently while rotating counterclockwise to release from the socket. For single-filament bulbs (turn signal), pull straight out from the socket. Inspect socket contacts for corrosion or damage.
  6. 6
    Install new bulb
Using a clean cloth or gloves to avoid touching the glass, insert the new bulb into the socket. For dual-filament bulbs, align the pins with the socket slots, push in, and rotate clockwise until it locks. For single-filament bulbs, push straight in until fully seated.
  7. 7
    Reinstall bulb socket
Insert the bulb socket back into the tail light housing, ensuring proper alignment of the socket tabs with the housing slots. Rotate clockwise 1/4 turn until it locks into place with a click or firm stop.
  8. 8
    Reinstall access panel
Replace the interior access panel by aligning the clips and pressing firmly until fully seated. If equipped with a screw, reinstall and tighten by hand - do not overtighten plastic trim screws.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure access panel is fully secured and flush with surrounding trim
  2. Close rear liftgate

Verification

  • Turn ignition to ON position and verify parking lights illuminate the new bulb
  • Have assistant press brake pedal while you verify brake light function
  • Activate turn signals on the repaired side and verify proper flashing
  • Shift to reverse and verify reverse light function if that bulb was replaced
  • Check for proper operation in all lighting modes before returning vehicle to service
