Complete major tune-up service including spark plugs, air filter, cabin filter, engine oil and filter change, fuel filter inspection, throttle body cleaning, and ignition system inspection for the 2.5L I4 engine.
Warnings
⚠️Engine must be cool before beginning work. Hot engine components can cause severe burns.
⚠Ensure vehicle is securely supported on jack stands before working underneath. Never rely on jack alone.
⚠Keep ignition off and key removed during all work to prevent accidental engine start.
ℹ️Spark plug gaps are pre-set on iridium plugs. Do not attempt to adjust gap as this can damage the electrode.

Fluids
- Hyundai Genuine 0W-20 Engine Oil — 5 qt
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and apply parking brake
- Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
- Allow engine to cool completely (minimum 2 hours if recently driven)
- Gather all tools, parts, and fluids before starting
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and secure cable away from battery post
- Raise front of vehicle and secure on jack stands if needed for oil change access
Procedure
- 1Remove engine cover and air intake systemRemove the plastic engine cover by pulling upward on the front clips and lifting off. Disconnect the mass airflow sensor electrical connector. Release the air box clips and remove the intake tube from the throttle body. Remove the complete air box assembly for access to engine components.Torque specAir Box Clips5 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 2Replace engine air filterOpen the air box housing by releasing the remaining clips. Remove the old air filter element and inspect the housing for debris. Clean housing interior with a clean cloth if needed. Install new air filter ensuring proper seating in the housing. Reinstall air box cover and secure clips.Torque specAir Box Clips5 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 3Replace cabin air filterOpen the glove box and remove contents. Squeeze sides of glove box to release stops and lower fully. Remove cabin air filter cover located behind glove box. Slide out old cabin filter noting airflow direction arrow. Install new filter with airflow arrow pointing in same direction. Reinstall cover and reset glove box.
- 4Remove ignition coils and inspectLocate the four ignition coils on top of the engine. Disconnect the electrical connector from each coil by pressing the release tab. Remove the mounting bolt from each coil. Carefully pull each coil straight up with a slight twisting motion to break the seal. Inspect coil boots for cracks, carbon tracking, or damage. Apply dielectric grease to inside of boots if reusing.⚠Do not pull on wires when removing coil connectors. Press release tab and pull on connector body only.Torque specSensor Bolts11 Nm (8 lb-ft)
- 5Remove and replace spark plugsUsing a spark plug socket with extension, remove each spark plug by turning counterclockwise. Inspect old plugs for wear, carbon buildup, or abnormal conditions which may indicate engine issues. Check gap on new spark plugs (should be pre-gapped). Apply a small amount of anti-seize to plug threads (avoid getting on electrode). Hand-thread new plugs clockwise until finger-tight, then torque to manufacturer specification (typically 15-20 Nm for this engine - verify with plug manufacturer recommendations as not in torque database).⚠Do not over-torque spark plugs as this can damage aluminum cylinder head threads. Follow plug manufacturer torque specification.ℹ️If a plug is difficult to remove, apply penetrating oil and wait 15 minutes before attempting again.
- 6Reinstall ignition coilsAlign each ignition coil with its corresponding spark plug. Press coil firmly down onto spark plug until fully seated. Install and torque the coil mounting bolt. Reconnect the electrical connector to each coil, ensuring it clicks into place. Verify all four coils are secure and properly connected.Torque specSensor Bolts11 Nm (8 lb-ft)
- 7Clean throttle bodyWith air intake removed, access the throttle body. Spray throttle body cleaner onto a clean cloth (not directly into throttle body). Wipe the throttle plate and bore clean, rotating the throttle plate by hand if needed for full access. Remove all carbon deposits and residue. Allow to air dry completely before reassembly.⚠Do not force throttle plate open. Use gentle pressure only to avoid damaging electronic throttle control mechanism.
- 8Drain engine oilPosition oil drain pan under engine oil drain plug located on bottom of oil pan. Remove drain plug using appropriate socket, allowing oil to drain completely (approximately 10 minutes). Inspect drain plug threads and oil pan threads for damage. Install new crush washer on drain plug. Reinstall and torque drain plug to specification.⚠Used engine oil may still be warm. Wear gloves to protect skin from hot oil and contaminants.Torque specOil Drain Plug35 Nm (26 lb-ft)
- 9Replace oil filterLocate oil filter on engine block (typically driver side). Position drain pan underneath. Use oil filter wrench to remove old filter by turning counterclockwise. Clean the filter mounting surface on engine block. Apply a thin film of fresh oil to the rubber gasket of new filter. Hand-thread new filter clockwise until gasket contacts mounting surface, then tighten an additional 3/4 turn by hand. Do not use filter wrench to install.
- 10Refill engine oil and check levelLower vehicle if raised. Remove oil filler cap on top of engine. Using funnel, add 4.5 quarts of 0W-20 engine oil. Replace oil filler cap. Wait 2 minutes, then check oil level with dipstick. Add remaining oil in small increments until level reaches the full mark. Do not overfill.
- 11Reassemble air intake systemReinstall air box assembly and secure to mounting location. Reconnect intake tube to throttle body and tighten clamp. Reconnect mass airflow sensor electrical connector. Reinstall engine cover by aligning clips and pressing down firmly until all clips engage.Torque specAir Box Clips5 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 12Reconnect battery and perform system resetReconnect negative battery terminal and torque to specification if applicable. Turn ignition to ON position (without starting engine) for 10 seconds to allow throttle body relearn procedure. Turn ignition OFF, wait 10 seconds, then repeat two more times. This allows the ECU to relearn idle position after throttle body cleaning.
Reassembly
- Verify all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
- Confirm engine cover is properly secured with all clips engaged
- Double-check oil drain plug and filter are tight
- Ensure no tools or materials are left in engine bay
Verification
- Start engine and verify it starts smoothly without misfires or rough idle
- Check for oil leaks around drain plug and oil filter while engine is running
- Allow engine to reach operating temperature and verify smooth idle (may take 5-10 minutes for ECU to fully adapt)
- Verify check engine light does not illuminate
- Check oil level again after engine reaches operating temperature and add if needed
- Test drive vehicle to confirm smooth acceleration and no hesitation or misfires under load
- Re-check all fluid levels after test drive
