Parts
- Turn signal/combination switch assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Steering column cover clips (if damaged) × 1 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Turn steering wheel to center position and lock if possible
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait minimum 3 minutes for airbag system to discharge
- Adjust steering column to lowest position for easier access
- Prepare clean workspace to organize removed fasteners and components
Procedure
- 1Remove lower steering column coverLocate the lower steering column cover beneath the steering wheel. Remove the Phillips screws securing the lower cover (typically 2-3 screws). Gently pull the lower cover away from the column, releasing any remaining clips. Set cover and screws aside in organized manner.Torque specSteering Column Covers2 Nm (1.5 lb-ft)
- 2Remove upper steering column coverWith lower cover removed, locate the upper steering column cover screws (typically 2 screws at bottom edge). Remove these screws and carefully separate the upper cover from the column assembly. Note the location of any wiring clips or routing guides attached to the cover. Set upper cover aside with hardware.Torque specSteering Column Covers2 Nm (1.5 lb-ft)
- 3Identify turn signal switch assemblyLocate the turn signal/combination switch on the left side of the steering column. This assembly includes the turn signal lever and typically integrates high beam, wiper, and washer controls. Note the electrical connector location at the base of the switch assembly before proceeding.ℹ️Take a photo of connector orientation and wire routing for reference during installation.
- 4Disconnect electrical connectorLocate the main electrical connector for the turn signal switch assembly. Press the locking tab on the connector (typically on top or side) and carefully pull the connector straight off the switch terminals. Do not pull on wires. If connector is tight, gently rock it side to side while pulling to release.⚠Connector locking tabs are fragile; use controlled force to avoid breakage.
- 5Remove switch mounting screwsLocate the mounting screws securing the turn signal switch to the steering column housing (typically 2 screws). Using the appropriate Phillips screwdriver, remove these screws completely. Keep screws in a safe place as they are small and easily lost.Torque specSwitch Mounting Screws3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
- 6Remove turn signal switch assemblyWith mounting screws removed, carefully slide the turn signal switch assembly away from the steering column. The switch may have a tab or guide pin that requires specific angle for removal. Gently wiggle the assembly while pulling to release it from the column. Remove the old switch completely from the vehicle.ℹ️Note the orientation and any alignment pins to ensure correct installation of new switch.
- 7Install new turn signal switchPosition the new turn signal switch assembly at the mounting location on the steering column. Align any guide pins or tabs with their corresponding slots in the column housing. Slide the switch into position ensuring it seats fully against the mounting surface. Verify the switch lever operates freely without binding.⚠Ensure switch is fully seated before installing screws to prevent misalignment and binding.
- 8Install and torque switch mounting screwsInsert the switch mounting screws and hand-tighten them initially. Using a torque wrench, tighten the screws to specification in a cross pattern if multiple screws are present. Verify the switch remains properly aligned and operates smoothly after torquing.Torque specSwitch Mounting Screws3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
- 9Reconnect electrical connectorAlign the electrical connector with the terminals on the turn signal switch assembly, ensuring proper orientation per your reference photo. Push the connector firmly onto the terminals until you hear or feel a positive click indicating the locking tab has engaged. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is locked in place.⚠Misaligned connectors can damage pins; ensure alignment before applying force.
- 10Reinstall upper steering column coverPosition the upper steering column cover back onto the column assembly. Ensure any wiring is properly routed and not pinched. Align the cover with the lower portion of the column and install the mounting screws. Torque screws to specification using the torque wrench.Torque specSteering Column Covers2 Nm (1.5 lb-ft)
- 11Reinstall lower steering column coverPosition the lower steering column cover and align it with the upper cover and column assembly. Press firmly to engage any clips, then install the mounting screws. Torque screws to specification. Verify both covers are secure and properly aligned with no gaps.Torque specSteering Column Covers2 Nm (1.5 lb-ft)
- 12Reconnect battery and initialize systemsReconnect the negative battery terminal. Turn the ignition to the ON position (do not start engine). Allow the vehicle systems to initialize for approximately 30 seconds. Check for any warning lights on the instrument cluster related to turn signals or electrical systems.
Reassembly
- Ensure all steering column covers are properly aligned and secured with no gaps
- Verify turn signal lever has full range of motion without interference
- Confirm all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
- Check that no wiring is pinched between covers or components
Verification
- Turn ignition to ON position and verify instrument cluster functions normally
- Test left turn signal operation - verify front, rear, and dash indicators flash properly
- Test right turn signal operation - verify front, rear, and dash indicators flash properly
- Test hazard light function - verify all four corners flash simultaneously
- Test high beam operation and indicator light on instrument cluster
- Test windshield wiper and washer functions at all speed settings
- Verify turn signal auto-cancel function operates correctly when turning steering wheel
- Check that no warning lights remain illuminated on instrument cluster
- Confirm steering column covers are secure and rattle-free
