This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the factory amplifier located in the rear cargo area of 2012-2018 Jeep Wrangler JK models equipped with the premium audio system.

Warnings

Disconnecting the battery will erase radio presets and require radio security code re-entry on some models
ℹ️The amplifier is located behind the driver side rear interior panel in 4-door models, or behind the driver side panel in 2-door models
Do not force electrical connectors; they have release tabs that must be pressed before removal

Parts

  • Amplifier (if replacement required) × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • Trim panel clips (if broken) × 5 — Mopar 6503217

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Turn ignition off and remove key
  3. Open driver side rear door (4-door) or tilt driver seat forward (2-door) for access
  4. Remove any cargo or items from the rear storage area on driver side
  5. Disconnect negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shorts

Procedure

  1. 1
    Disconnect battery negative terminal
Using a 10mm socket, loosen the negative battery terminal bolt. Remove the negative cable from the battery post and secure it away from the battery to prevent accidental reconnection. Wait 2 minutes for electrical system to discharge.
    Torque spec
    Battery Terminal Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
  2. 2
    Remove rear interior side panel
Locate the interior side panel on the driver side rear cargo area. Using trim panel removal tools, carefully pry out the plastic trim clips starting from the bottom edge. Work your way around the perimeter, releasing approximately 6-8 clips. Pull the panel away from the body and set aside safely.
  3. 3
    Locate and access amplifier
The amplifier is mounted to the interior body panel behind the trim you just removed. It is a rectangular metal box approximately 8x6 inches with multiple wire harness connectors. Use a flashlight to identify all connectors and mounting hardware.
  4. 4
    Disconnect amplifier electrical connectors
Identify the main wire harness connectors (typically 2-4 connectors depending on audio system). Press the release tab on each connector while pulling straight away from the amplifier. Do not twist or rock the connectors. Note the orientation and position of each connector for reinstallation.
  5. 5
    Remove ground connection
Using a 10mm socket, remove the ground strap bolt connecting the amplifier ground wire to the chassis. This is typically a black wire with a ring terminal. Clean the contact surface on both the ring terminal and chassis mounting point with a wire brush or sandpaper to ensure good electrical contact during reassembly.
    Torque spec
    Ground Strap Bolt16 Nm (12 lb-ft)
  6. 6
    Remove amplifier mounting bolts
Using a 10mm socket, remove the amplifier mounting bolts (typically 2-3 bolts). Support the amplifier with one hand while removing the final bolt to prevent it from falling. Carefully pull the amplifier away from the mounting bracket.
    Torque spec
    Mounting Bolts39 Nm (29 lb-ft)
  7. 7
    Remove amplifier from vehicle
With all connectors and mounting hardware removed, carefully extract the amplifier from the vehicle. Inspect the old amplifier for obvious signs of damage, corrosion, or loose connections. Inspect all wire harness connectors for bent pins or corrosion.
  8. 8
    Install replacement amplifier
Position the new or repaired amplifier into the mounting location, aligning the mounting holes with the bracket. Start all mounting bolts by hand before tightening any of them to ensure proper alignment. Torque mounting bolts to specification in a cross pattern.
    Torque spec
    Mounting Bolts39 Nm (29 lb-ft)
  9. 9
    Reconnect ground connection
Verify the ground contact surface on the chassis is clean and free of paint or corrosion. Position the ground ring terminal over the mounting stud and install the ground bolt. Torque to specification ensuring a solid electrical connection.
    Torque spec
    Ground Strap Bolt16 Nm (12 lb-ft)
  10. 10
    Reconnect electrical connectors
Reconnect each wire harness connector to the amplifier in the reverse order of removal. Push each connector firmly until you hear or feel a positive click indicating the locking tab has engaged. Gently tug on each connector to verify it is fully seated. Apply dielectric grease to connector seals if desired for corrosion protection.
  11. 11
    Reinstall interior side panel
Align the interior side panel with the body, ensuring no wires are pinched behind it. Press firmly around all clip locations to seat the panel clips into their mounting holes. Verify the panel sits flush and all clips are engaged.
  12. 12
    Reconnect battery
Reconnect the negative battery terminal to the battery post. Torque the terminal bolt to specification. Do not overtighten as this can damage the battery post or terminal.
    Torque spec
    Battery Terminal Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked before closing panels
  2. Verify no tools or parts are left in the rear cargo area
  3. Check that all interior panels are properly secured and aligned
  4. Reset clock and radio presets as needed

Verification

  • Turn ignition to ON position (engine does not need to start) and verify no warning lights related to audio system appear
  • Power on the radio and verify all speakers are functioning correctly
  • Test audio at various volume levels to ensure amplifier is operating properly
  • Verify subwoofer operation if equipped
  • Test fade and balance controls to confirm all speaker channels are working
  • Check for any unusual noises, distortion, or intermittent operation that could indicate poor connections
