This procedure covers removal and replacement of the combination switch (multifunction switch) assembly on the steering column, which controls turn signals, headlights, wipers, and cruise control.

Warnings

⚠️Disconnect battery negative terminal and wait 2 minutes before working near airbag components to prevent accidental deployment
Do not rotate steering wheel or attempt to start vehicle with combination switch disconnected to prevent clock spring damage
ℹ️Keep ignition in LOCK position and steering wheel centered throughout procedure to maintain clock spring alignment

Parts

  • Combination switch assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • Steering column shroud clips (if broken) × 1 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Turn ignition to LOCK position and remove key
  3. Center steering wheel in straight-ahead position
  4. Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait minimum 2 minutes for airbag system to discharge
  5. Lower steering column to lowest position for easier access

Procedure

  1. 1
    Disconnect battery negative terminal
Using appropriate socket, loosen and remove negative battery terminal cable. Secure cable away from battery post. Wait minimum 2 minutes before proceeding to allow airbag system capacitors to discharge.
    Torque spec
    Battery Terminal Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
  2. 2
    Remove lower steering column shroud
Locate and remove screws securing lower steering column shroud (typically 2-3 screws on underside). Carefully pull lower shroud away from column and set aside. Note location of any clips for reassembly.
    Torque spec
    Cover Screws12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
  3. 3
    Remove upper steering column shroud
With lower shroud removed, locate and remove screws securing upper steering column shroud. Gently separate upper shroud from column, being careful not to damage any clips. May need to tilt shroud to clear combination switch levers.
    Torque spec
    Cover Screws12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
  4. 4
    Disconnect combination switch electrical connectors
Locate the main electrical connector(s) on the combination switch assembly. Press release tabs and carefully disconnect all electrical connectors. On models with separate turn signal and wiper switches, there may be 2-3 connectors. Note connector positions and routing for reassembly.
  5. 5
    Remove combination switch mounting screws
Locate the mounting screws securing combination switch assembly to steering column (typically 2-3 Torx screws). Remove all mounting screws completely and keep them organized. Note that some screws may have different lengths.
    Torque spec
    Connector Screws4 Nm (3 lb-ft)
  6. 6
    Remove combination switch assembly
With mounting screws removed, carefully slide combination switch assembly off steering column shaft. May need to manipulate switch stalks to clear column opening. Avoid forcing to prevent damage to clock spring or wiring harness.
  7. 7
Inspect clock spring and column components
With switch removed, visually inspect clock spring (yellow connector assembly behind steering wheel) for damage, cracks, or tape damage. Verify steering wheel remains centered and clock spring has not rotated. Check column wiring harness for chafing or damage.
If clock spring appears damaged or has rotated from center position, it must be replaced and centered before proceeding
  8. 8
    Install new combination switch assembly
Position new combination switch assembly onto steering column shaft, ensuring proper alignment with mounting holes. Verify switch stalks are positioned correctly and not binding. Slide assembly fully onto column until seated.
  9. 9
    Install combination switch mounting screws
Install all combination switch mounting screws and tighten to specification. Ensure switch assembly is properly aligned and seated before final tightening. Verify switch stalks move freely through full range of motion.
    Torque spec
    Connector Screws4 Nm (3 lb-ft)
  10. 10
    Reconnect electrical connectors
Reconnect all electrical connectors to combination switch assembly, ensuring each connector clicks securely into place. Verify connectors are properly seated and locking tabs are engaged. Route wiring harness as originally positioned to prevent pinching.
  11. 11
    Reinstall steering column shrouds
Position upper steering column shroud over column, ensuring it fits around combination switch assembly properly. Install and tighten screws to specification. Install lower shroud, aligning all clips, and secure with screws.
    Torque spec
    Cover Screws12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
  12. 12
    Reconnect battery and test
Reconnect negative battery terminal and tighten to specification. Turn ignition to ON position (engine off) and test all combination switch functions: turn signals (left/right), headlights (low/high beam), wipers (all speeds), washer, and cruise control functions. Verify all functions operate correctly.
    Torque spec
    Battery Terminal Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
  2. Verify steering column shrouds are properly clipped and secured
  3. Confirm battery terminal is tightened to proper specification
  4. Check that all switch stalks return to neutral position when released

Verification

  • With ignition ON, verify turn signals flash at correct rate and cancel properly
  • Test headlight functions including high beam, low beam, and flash-to-pass
  • Verify wiper operates correctly in all speed settings and delay modes
  • Test washer spray function operates when wiper stalk is pulled
  • Confirm cruise control SET, RESUME, and CANCEL functions work properly
  • Check that hazard lights operate correctly with combination switch installed
  • Verify no warning lights remain illuminated on instrument cluster
  • Ensure steering wheel can be turned lock-to-lock without binding or unusual resistance
