Replace the headlight dimmer switch (multifunction switch) on the steering column to restore high/low beam and turn signal functionality.

Warnings

Improper handling of clockspring can cause airbag deployment or disable airbag functionality. Do not rotate clockspring while removed from steering shaft.
Wait at least 2 minutes after battery disconnect before working on airbag-related components to allow capacitors to discharge.
ℹ️The multifunction switch includes dimmer (high/low beam), turn signal, wiper, and washer controls on one assembly.

Parts

  • Multifunction switch (dimmer/turn signal switch) × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • Steering column cover clips (if broken) × 1 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key
  3. Turn steering wheel to center position (wheels straight ahead)
  4. Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 2 minutes before proceeding
  5. Lower steering column to lowest tilt position for easier access

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove lower steering column covers
Remove the two Torx T20 screws at the bottom of the lower steering column cover. Pull the lower cover down and away from the column. Remove the upper cover by releasing the retaining clips and lifting upward. Set both covers aside.
  2. 2
    Disconnect multifunction switch connector
Locate the large electrical connector on the left side of the steering column. Press the red connector lock tab and pull the connector straight out from the multifunction switch. Note the routing of the wiring harness for reinstallation.
  3. 3
    Remove clockspring retaining screws
Locate the two Torx T30 screws securing the clockspring to the steering column. Remove these screws but do not remove the clockspring yet. The clockspring sits between the multifunction switch and the steering wheel.
The clockspring must remain centered. Do not rotate the steering wheel or clockspring during this procedure.
  4. 4
    Mark clockspring position
Use a marker or piece of tape to mark the alignment between the clockspring and steering column housing. This ensures proper reinstallation. Carefully pull the clockspring forward off the steering shaft, keeping it level and centered. Set aside in a safe location where it will not be rotated.
  5. 5
    Remove multifunction switch mounting screws
Locate the three Torx T20 screws securing the multifunction switch assembly to the steering column. These screws are positioned around the perimeter of the switch housing. Remove all three screws completely.
  6. 6
    Remove multifunction switch
Carefully pull the multifunction switch assembly straight back off the steering column shaft. Guide the wiring harness through the column opening. Inspect the steering column for any debris or damage before installing the new switch.
  7. 7
    Install new multifunction switch
Route the new switch wiring harness through the column opening. Align the new multifunction switch onto the steering column shaft, ensuring the turn signal cancel cam properly engages with the steering shaft notch. Slide the switch fully onto the column until it seats against the housing.
  8. 8
    Secure multifunction switch
Install the three Torx T20 mounting screws in a star pattern to ensure even seating. Tighten screws to 4.0 Nm (3.0 lb-ft) using a torque wrench. Verify the switch is firmly seated and does not rock or move.

    Connector Screws4 Nm (3 lb-ft)
  9. 9
    Reinstall clockspring
Verify the clockspring is still centered (centering window should show correct position or alignment marks match). Align the clockspring with your reference marks and carefully slide it onto the steering shaft. Ensure it seats fully against the multifunction switch.
If clockspring was accidentally rotated, it must be re-centered before installation. Rotate clockspring fully in one direction until it stops, then rotate back 2.5 turns to center.
  10. 10
    Secure clockspring
Install the two Torx T30 clockspring retaining screws. Tighten screws evenly to 12.0 Nm (9.0 lb-ft) using a torque wrench. Verify clockspring is firmly attached and centered.

    Cover Screws12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
  11. 11
    Reconnect electrical connector
Route the wiring harness in the original path. Push the multifunction switch electrical connector firmly into place until the red lock tab clicks. Tug gently on the connector to verify it is fully seated and locked.
  12. 12
    Reinstall steering column covers
Position the upper steering column cover and press down to engage the retaining clips. Install the lower cover, ensuring all tabs align properly. Install the two Torx T20 screws at the bottom and tighten to 4.0 Nm (3.0 lb-ft).
    Torque spec
    Connector Screws4 Nm (3 lb-ft)
  13. 13
    Reconnect battery
Reconnect the negative battery terminal. Tighten the terminal bolt to 8.0 Nm (6.0 lb-ft) using a torque wrench. Ensure connection is clean and tight.
    Torque spec
    Battery Terminal Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all steering column covers are properly clipped and secured with no gaps
  2. Verify all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
  3. Check that steering wheel turns smoothly without binding or unusual resistance

Verification

  • Turn ignition to ON position (engine off) and verify no airbag warning light remains illuminated after initial bulb check
  • Test turn signals in both left and right positions, verify proper flashing and self-canceling function
  • Test headlight dimmer by pulling switch toward you (high beam) and pushing away (low beam), verify blue indicator light illuminates for high beams
  • Test windshield wiper and washer functions through all switch positions
  • Turn steering wheel lock to lock and verify turn signals self-cancel properly
  • Test all functions with engine running to confirm full electrical operation
  • If airbag light remains on after starting, clockspring may need to be re-centered or codes cleared with scan tool
