This procedure covers the replacement of fog light bulbs on a 2012-2018 Jeep Wrangler JK with 3.6L V6 engine, including proper bulb handling and connector reassembly.
Warnings
⚠Do not touch halogen bulb glass with bare skin. Oils from skin cause hot spots that lead to premature bulb failure.
⚠Allow fog lights to cool for at least 10 minutes before attempting bulb replacement to avoid burns.
ℹ️Fog light assemblies are accessed from behind the front bumper, not through the engine bay.
Tools required
Flathead screwdriver or trim removal toolEssential
Work gloves (clean, oil-free)Essential
Ratchet with 10mm socket (if removal clips are fastened)
Parts
- H10 fog light bulb (9145) × 2 — H10 or 9145 halogen bulb
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and turn off ignition
- Allow fog lights to cool if recently used (minimum 10 minutes)
- Turn front wheels fully to the side opposite the fog light being serviced for easier access
- Put on clean, oil-free work gloves to prevent skin contact with new bulb glass
Procedure
- 1Access fog light assembly from wheel wellFrom behind the front wheel, locate the fog light assembly housing at the front corner of the bumper. The bulb socket is accessed from the rear of the housing. You may need to reach through the wheel well opening or gently pull back the plastic wheel well liner if equipped. On JK models, access is typically open without liner removal.
- 2Disconnect electrical connectorLocate the electrical connector attached to the rear of the fog light bulb socket. Press the release tab on the connector and pull straight back to disconnect it from the bulb socket. Note the orientation of the connector for reinstallation.
- 3Remove bulb socket from housingGrasp the bulb socket firmly and rotate it counterclockwise approximately 1/4 turn (90 degrees) until it releases from the fog light housing. Pull the socket straight out from the housing. The bulb is integrated with the socket on this application.
- 4Remove old bulb from socketThe H10 bulb is retained in the socket by a twist-lock or press-fit mechanism. Grasp the bulb base (not the glass) and pull straight out from the socket while gently rocking if needed. If twist-lock style, rotate counterclockwise before pulling. Inspect socket terminals for corrosion or damage.
- 5Install new bulbRemove new H10 bulb from packaging without touching the glass envelope. Handle only by the plastic base. Insert bulb into socket, aligning the tabs with socket grooves. Push firmly until seated, or twist clockwise if twist-lock style. Verify bulb is secure in socket.
- 6Reinstall bulb socket into housingInsert the bulb socket assembly into the fog light housing, aligning the tabs with the housing slots. Push in fully and rotate clockwise approximately 1/4 turn until it locks into place. Tug gently to confirm it is seated.
- 7Reconnect electrical connectorAlign the electrical connector with the bulb socket terminals and push straight in until the connector clicks and locks into place. Tug gently on the connector to verify it is secured.
- 8Test fog light operationTurn ignition to ON position (engine does not need to start). Turn on headlights and activate fog light switch. Verify the replaced fog light illuminates properly. If bulb does not light, recheck connector engagement and bulb seating.
Reassembly
- Ensure wheel well liner (if disturbed) is properly repositioned and secured
- Return steering wheel to center position
- Repeat procedure for opposite side fog light if needed
Verification
- With headlights on, activate fog light switch and verify both fog lights illuminate with equal brightness
- Visually inspect from front of vehicle to confirm proper fog light operation
- Check that fog lights turn off with the fog light switch
